July 2010 Bonaire, dive site Rappel, diving with Buddy Dive, midday at about 35-40 feet, a Goliath Grouper (aka Jewfish) came out to play. I estimate his size at around three feet and 50-75 pounds. My guess is he was looking for someone to feed him something and I'm sticking to it. The encounter lasted around four minutes. Some interesting moments include the little head shake at one point, and his touching Spiderman's mask, regulator and hand, as well as the divemaster's fins at the end of the visit.

Four Goliath Grouper, Jewfish, in one afternoon of fishing by Captain Scott Erickson, Melissa Erickson, and Tanner Gray. We drove to Punta Gorda, Florida (Port Charlotte Area) from Topsail Island, North Carolina to visit my vacationing grandparents. We fished out of Englewood with Captain Tom McLaughlin the first day, and during a tiny weather window a few days later, Tanner Gray and Scott Erickson demostrated their new skills and knowlege catching Jewfish just inside Boca Grand Pass. It was a slow bite to start each day and hard to stay hooked up, but after moving around a bit we found the hungry ones.

Goliath groupers gather annually in spawning aggregations at offshore reefs and wreck sites throughout the Caribbean and parts of Florida. During filming for Americas Underwater Treasures, a two-hour PBS special documenting all the US National Marine Sanctuaries as part of the Ocean Adventures series, Jean-Michel, Fabien and Celine Cousteau witness a congregation of these enormous fish. This fight was on 80lb test line with a pole that should have been double the girth for this kind of fish. The fish had three fresh hooks in its mouth from previous attempts, but David came through and beat this Goliath, and just a half hour before our charter ended. Awesome way to end the fishing trip. We literally got to this spot while another boat captain was there and left before they did, after having caught more fish and of higher quality. But at least we were nice to them and asked their permission to fish there and even courteous enough to give them the rest of our live bait we had caught earlier. ***Note: We didn't bring this monster Goliath Grouper up on board as to not hurt it due to its weight, estimated at nearly 500lbs! We did however play dentist for it, cleaning up the three hooks that were apparently fresh from today. After our pictures, we saw that it was having trouble turning from belly up due ...
