This is the head of a tigerfish of the genus Hydrocynus from the Niger River in Mali, West Africa. This is a smaller species than the goliath tigerfish/demonfish of the Congo Basin. I bought this head fresh at the Balanzan market in 1993. In Bambara they are called wulu-jege, which means dog-fish. They are in the same order as piranha (Characiformes), but not in the same family -- THEY ARE NOT PIRANHA. This one appears to have replacement teeth that move into place when a tooth is lost -- much like a shark. The other species of tigerfish also have that strongly articulated upper jaw. The ones in Mali are also very snappy when caught, and fishermen immediately bashed tigerfish teeth out with a small metal rod. But most individuals/species of tigerfish do not bite chunks out of prey -- they use the teeth to grab fish, and then they swallow other fish whole. Some do take chunks out of other fish, and one species has been observed in schools ripping apart fledgling water birds. They readily take artificial lures, but I found them difficult to hook -- probably due to the heavy skull and teeth that immobilize the lure, which prevents a hook set. Often the entire school would get a bite at my lure, I would hook none, and then no more bites after that one cast. When I did hook/land one, the fishing in that spot was pretty much shut down for all species. If you fish for tigerfish, it is considered rude to target them around other people fishing -- because if you hook one you will ...
