Intel's scientists are creating detailed maps of the activity in the brain for individual words which can then be matched against the brain activity of someone using the computer, allowing the machine to determine the word they are thinking. - (ABC) It sounds like a Hollywood movie: cybercriminals in a van use a laptop to hack wirelessly into the computer-controlled systems of the car on the road ahead. In seconds the target car's engine, brakes, and door locks are under their nefarious control. Texas cops say a man hacked into GPS systems and disabled more than 100 cars. It doesn't take a great script writer to figure out what's next -- except that it's not the movies anymore. It's real -- well, almost. Hackers aren't taking over our cars just yet, but without tighter computer security they be able to before too long, research conducted by scientists at four universities indicates. - (Forbes) As the privacy controversy around full-body security scans begins to simmer, it's worth noting that courthouses and airport security checkpoints aren't the only places where backscatter x-ray vision is being deployed. Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations. Sea Shepherd's primary mandate is to assume a law enforcement role as provided by the United Nations World Charter for Nature. This charter was adopted by the United Nation's General Assembly on November 9, 1982. Sea Shepherd is guided by the UN Charter World Charter for Nature and cites Section 21 under the heading of Implementations as the Society's authority to act on behalf of international conservation law.
Daniel Susana visits Cedar Hill, Frederick Douglass' house in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, DC, which is preserved as a National Historic Site. "Douglass and Anna had five children: Charles Remond Douglass, Rosetta Douglass, Lewis Henry Douglass, Frederick Douglass Jr., and Annie Douglass (died at the age of ten). The two oldest, Charles and Rossetta, helped produce his newspapers. In 1877, Douglass bought their final home in Washington DC, on a hill above the Anacostia River. He and Anna named it Cedar Hill (also spelled CedarHill). They expanded the house from 14 to 21 rooms, and included a china closet. One year later, Douglass purchased adjoining lots and expanded the property to 15 acres (61000 m²). The home has been designated the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. His wife, Anna Murray Douglas, died in 1882, leaving him with a sense of great loss and depressed for a time. He found new meaning from working with activist Ida B. Wells. In only six years Facebook has gone from a dorm room novelty to a company that will soon reach 500 million users. It has transformed social life in the United States and elsewhere; become a ubiquitous presence in marketing; and altered politics, businesses, and even our sense of our own identity. Perhaps even more remarkable is that a 19-year-old college student created this phenomenon. THE FACEBOOK EFFECT: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World (Simon & Schuster; June 15, 2010), tells the complete story of Facebook that can be found nowhere else. Reporter David Kirkpatrick, the former Senior Tech Editor at Fortune magazine, had the full cooperation of the company's key executives in researching this fascinating history of Facebook and its impact on our lives. Kirkpatrick tells us how it was created, why it has flourished, and where it is going next. He chronicles its successes and missteps, and gives readers the most complete assessment anywhere of founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the central figure in the company's remarkable ascent. With his regular, unprecedented access to Mark Zuckerberg and the key staff at Facebook, Kirkpatrick also reveals never before known details of which companies tried to buy Facebook (and for how much money), and why Facebook might actually disappear within 5 years, and yet the company remain healthier than ever.

Peter Nowak visits Google's Waterloo office to present his book "Sex, Bombs & Burgers". This event took place on March 11, 2010, as part of the Authors@Google series. The talk will focus on the main theme of the book, which is how the military, porn and food industries have been the biggest drivers of technology over the past century. The links between these three are not immediately clear, but they are all rooted in humanity's basest instincts. In essence, my book is about how the worst parts of human vice have resulted in some truly incredible achievements. Peter Nowak is the senior science and technology reporter for CBC News Online. He has been writing about technology for more than a decade and his work has appeared in many top newspapers in Canada and around the world, including The National Post, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Boston Globe, The South China Morning Post, The Sydney Morning Herald and The New Zealand Herald. He won the 2009 Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance award for excellence in reporting, and was named the 2006 journalist of the year by the Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand. Peter Nowak lives in Toronto.
In January 2010, Google Inc. decided it would not continue to censor its users searches in mainland China. Google had previously agreed to the censorship in order to comply with Chinas strict communist government. The censorship blocked users in China from accessing sites containing information on free speech, the Tiananman Square protests, and democracy. Even news sties such as BBC News, and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are blocked. It was an incident in early 2010 that finally convinced Google to stop complying with Chinas censorship laws. The company discovered that the Gmail accounts of Chinese users were being hacked into, and that the Chinese government was most likely behind it. Google responded to the infiltration on March 22, 2010 by redirecting Chinese users who accessed the censored Chinese search engine (www.google.cn) to the uncensored Hong Kong search engine (www.google.hk), where users could have access to any site. Google and China are now in a legal battle. Chinese officials claim that the company must comply with its nations laws, while Google continues to make a stance for free speech. This controversy shows an interesting prospective of international politics. This is not a typical dispute between one nation and another; it is a dispute between one nation and a company. We have reached a point in the age of globalization, where a companys influence can be so great, that its actions have repercussions on a global scale. What will ...

In our mothers day there were good mothers, neglectful mothers, and occasionally great mothers. Today we have only Bad Mothers. If you work, youre neglectful; if you stay home, youre smothering. If you discipline, youre buying them a spot on the shrinks couch; if you let them run wild, they will be into drugs by seventh grade. If you buy organic, youre spending their college fund; if you dont, youre risking all sorts of allergies and illnesses. Is it any wonder so many women refer to themselves at one time or another as a bad mother? Ayelet Waldman says its time for women to get over it and get on with it, in a book that is sure to spark the same level of controversy as her now legendary Modern Love piece, in which she confessed to loving her husband more than her children. Covering topics as diverse as the hysteria of competitive parenting (Whose toddler can recite the planets in order from the sun?), the relentless pursuits of the Bad Mother police, balancing the work-family dynamic, and the bane of every mothers existence (homework, that is), Bad Mother illuminates the anxieties that riddle motherhood today, while providing women with the encouragement they need to give themselves a break.

Google Tech Talk April 8, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by W. David Schwaderer. Innovation is essential for all progress and competitive survival. It provides a democratic vehicle for individuals and upstarts to challenge and neutralize powerful incumbents. Yet, because change accompanies innovation, it is a double-edged sword. David Schwaderer has a Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Southern California. He has worked at IBM, EDS, Adaptec, Symantec, and Silicon Valley startups. He has authored six commercial software programs for a variety of machine architectures using several different languages, dozens of articles, and ten technical books that explain complex technology in approachable ways.
