This is our close approach to the top of the Bright Angel Trail. Here, we find ~actual~ signs of civilization - bringing our dwindling hopes higher and higher. The hike came to twelve hours since we began out of Phantom Ranch (counting a 2 hour break to let Cheryl relax from heat exhaustion) . As we got closer to the rim, we starting meeting people from the top who were hiking down the trail just for a wee little bit to get a sense of what the depths of the canyon were like (little did they know...). They were all clean-cut, and here we were all dirty, filthy, sweating, sunburned, hat-headed, catching our feet under our falling stomps, and mortally exhausted to our bitter ends. They were looking at us like "Where the $%&# did ya'll come from??". But close to the top we made it. One more scene to go! The music in this scene is also from the Grand Canyon Suite (which can be yours if you make an order right now through Amazon or itunes).

This is the continued hike to Ribbon Falls along the edge of the Bright Angel Creek in the Grand Canyon. The first section of the hike was a 4 mile northern route along a deep trench in the canyon. The second part was a 2 mile hike that took an eastern turn right into the hot Arizona sun. You'll see a part where I have a tube of water jammed into my mouth as I hike (yes, I am a dork). I mentioned that it was 105 degrees. I later found out that it was really 115. (Later that day it was 120). Believe me, you'd have a water tube jammed in your mouth too. The overall goal was to get to Ribbon Falls. But the momentary goal was to get from shade, to shade, to shade - even if you had to stand in the shade of a 2 inch diameter tree. If you look closely behind some brush of one scene, you'll see a mule deer that we encountered. The music in this scene is from Star Wars, and also the "Painted Desert" from the Grand Canyon Suite. Hike down the Kaibab Trail. The Kaibab is a trail that extends from the top of the South Rim down to the Colorado River. It connects with the Bright Angel Trail at the bottom of the Canyon. The trail was build by the National Park Service and has very wide-open vista views - an NO water along the way. Bring your own! The change in elevation is more than a mile. It was in the 40's at the top of the trail in the morning and 110's at the bottom - in the shade! This is another set of scenes that magically seemed to match the music. Again, no video editing occurred whatsoever. The music just seemed to 'click'... especially the scene with the flying bird. Amazing. This video shows half of this hike. Introduction to Grand Canyon Adventure. Back in 1997 - me, my mother, aunt, uncle and friends took at trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona (through Las Vegas). When I got back home, I created a video which has remained on VHS tape for years. I recently started to digitize the original and see what I can upload with it. This version is quite different from my original. When I first made the video, I used nothing more than my video camera, a VCR, a CD player while swip-swapping audio cables - lots of starts & stops (fun). Aerial Filmworks is working with the Grand Canyon National Park to film the national park using the Cineflex V14HD. This amazing gyro-stabilized aerial system uses an integrated Sony cinealta HDC1500 camera. The lens is a 42x 9.7mm Fujinon. All footage was recorded 1080/23.98p dual-link 4:4:4 to a Sony SRW1 deck on HDCAM SR tape stock. The original HDCAM SR source tapes were digitized using an AJA Kona3 card to a macpro 8 core with 17Gb RAM, and edited with Final Cut Pro at our inhouse edit suite. The Cineflex V14HD was mounted on the nose of a Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger helicopter. We worked closely with the national park to make sure all permissions and permits were in place. Daily updates to local air traffic control and the tour helicopter companies were sent on flight days. Our pilot was specifically approved for the operation by the FAA and Department of Interior. We mapped reference points to the GPS and input sensitive condor nesting areas that we needed to avoid. Natural resource and wildlife managers reviewed our flight plans. The Aerial Filmworks team believes in doing our part to maintain a carbon neutral planet. Through a partnership with terrapass, we invest in carbon offsets for every hour of flight time that our Cineflex equipment is on a helicopter.

In September, 2009 we embarked on a fantastic road trip through eleven Western states. Down the north coast of California, across to the Sierras (Yosemite and Sequoia), pit stop in Las Vegas, then on to the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verde (Colorado), Monument Valley, Arches Ntl. Park, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, and Zion Ntl Park. By Lake Powell we went to magical Antelope Canyon, saw the sunset at Horseshoe Bend and spent a day hiking through narrow Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch. Autumn was glorious in the Grand Tetons and the forest fire which closed most of Yellowstone didn't impede our view of geyser basin, the biggest collection of geysers in the world. Got home to Vancouver in time to see the new Ken Burns series on the National Parks of America - and I would agree - they really are the best idea which came from our neighbor down south. I decided to get some video of what a ski mountain looks like in the off-season, and since I live across the road from one... it was very convenient. I removed my audio commentaries from the original video and decided to add background music; an original 1945 recording of Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite," performed by The NBC Orchestra, conducted by Toscanini, played on a 1915 Columbia Grafonola. In one portion of the video, I actually climb to the top of one of the T-Bars to get an aerial shot.

Yoakum (added to what was once a long tunnel through a backstage service area) necessitated a change in the rolling stock as well; instead of facing forward, the new flatcars' benches now faced right so that the passengers could better enjoy the scenes. The diorama, which includes taxidermic animals (the only ones in the park) in lifelike poses, is the longest in the world. Painted on a single piece of seamless canvas and representing the view from the canyon's south rim, the rear of the diorama measures 306 feet (93 m) long, 34 feet (10 m) high and is covered with 300 gallons (1100 L) of paint. A 96-year-old Hopi chief, Chief Nevangnewa, blessed the trains on the diorama's opening day. The cost was US$367000, and it took 80000 labor hours to construct. The main theme of Ferde Grofe's "On The Trail," the third movement from his "Grand Canyon Suite," is piped in through the train's sound system as it enters the diorama. In 1966, the diorama was expanded with a prehistoric theme to become the "Grand Canyon World" diorama, with Audio-Animatronic dinosaurs from Walt Disney's Ford Magic Skyway attraction at the 1964 New York World's Fair.
