Suddenly the night has grown colder. The god of love preparing to depart. Alexandra hoisted on his shoulder, They slip between the sentries of the heart. Upheld by the simplicities of pleasure, They gain the light, they formlessly entwine; And radiant beyond your widest measure They fall among the voices and the wine. It's not a trick, your senses all deceiving, A fitful dream, the morning will exhaust Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving. Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost. Even though she sleeps upon your satin; Even though she wakes you with a kiss. Do not say the moment was imagined; Do not stoop to strategies like this. As someone long prepared for this to happen, Go firmly to the window. Drink it in. Exquisite music. Alexandra laughing. Your firm commitments tangible again. And you who had the honor of her evening, And by the honor had your own restored Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving; Alexandra leaving with her lord. Even though she sleeps upon your satin; Even though she wakes you with a kiss. Do not say the moment was imagined; Do not stoop to strategies like this. As someone long prepared for the occasion; In full command of every plan you wrecked Do not choose a coward's explanation that hides behind the cause and the effect. And you who were bewildered by a meaning; Whose code was broken, crucifix uncrossed Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving. Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost. Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving. Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost. the poem from C ...

The next in a weekly series of 10 minute topics teaching about various topics within Judaism. This week's topic is: Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha Literature. The Jewish Apocrypha (from the Greek, meaning "secret" or "hidden away") and Pseudepigrapha (from the Greek, meaning falsely attributed) are made up of various books - written in the Land of Israel in Hebrew or Aramaic and in Greek across the Diaspora - that were written by Jews but never canonized in the Tanach. Some of these books have been included in Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Bibles but are not part of the Jewish Holy Texts. Source: The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha (www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org
This clip is from the unusual 1940 15 minutes educational film, Goodbye Mr. Germ, produced by the National Tuberculosis Association (now the American Lung Association). TB is a contagious and potentially life-threatening infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB has been present in the human population since antiquity - fragments of the spinal column from Egyptian mummies from 2400 BCE show definite signs of tuberculosis. The term phthisis, consumption, appears first in Greek literature. Around 460 BCE, Hippocrates identified phthisis as the most widespread disease of the times, and noted that it was almost always fatal. The registered number of new cases of TB worldwide roughly correlates with economic conditions: the highest incidences are seen in those countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America with the lowest gross national products. The World Health Organization estimates that nine million people get TB every year, of whom 95% live in developing countries. An estimated 2-3 million people die from TB every year. In industrialized countries, the steady drop in TB incidence began to level off in the mid-1980s and then stagnated or even began to increase. The TB bacteria are spread from person to person through the air. People with TB disease of the lungs or larynx release the bacteria into the surrounding area when they cough, sneeze, talk, or otherwise expel air, dispersing droplets that contain M. tuberculosis. These droplets can ...

In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans after Paris of Troy stole Helen from her husband Menelaus, the king of Sparta. The war is among the most important events in Greek mythology, and was narrated in many works of Greek literature, including the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer. The Iliad relates a part of the last year of the siege of Troy, while the Odyssey describes the journey home of Odysseus, one of the Achaean leaders. Other parts of the war were told in a cycle of epic poems, which has only survived in fragments. Episodes from the war provided material for Greek tragedy and other works of Greek literature, and for Roman poets like Virgil and Ovid. Here is the opening sequence of episode one (with English subtitles) from the recent Greek TV series on the poet Kostas Karyotakis, one of the most troubling figures in modern Greek literature, who committed suicide in 1928, aged 32. Watch all six episodes (in Greek) here (www.greek-movies.com In the clip, Karyotakis tries to drown himself, fails, then succeeds in taking his life using a revolver. In between suicide attempts, Karyotakis wrote this suicide note: 'It is time for me to reveal my tragedy. My greatest faults were unbridled curiosity, a diseased imagination, and my attempts to become acquainted with every emotion without being able to feel most of them. However, I despise the base act that is attributed to me. I experienced but the ideation of its atmosphere, the ultimate bitterness. Nor am I the suitable person for that profession. My entire past will show that much. Every reality to me was repulsive. 'I felt the rush brought on by danger. And with glad heart I shall accept the coming danger. 'PS And, to change the tone: I advise those who can swim never to try to commit suicide in the sea. All night and for ten hours I was battered by the waves. I drank much water but, by and again and without me knowing how, my mouth would surface. Perhaps some time, given the opportunity, I shall write down the impressions of a drowning man.' The song is ΙΚΑΡΙΩΤΙΚΟ - Ikariotiko, from Giannis Parios (ΓΙΑΝΝΗΣ ΠΑΡΙΟΣ). Many of the paintings are from Herbert James Draper Homer (Ὅμηρος) wrote his works nearly 3000 years ago, and he still remains the standard of what is good literature. The Odyssey in particular is rich with allegory and metaphor, and other tropes. Its story has inspired the ancient writers until the modern, like James Joyce and Nikos Kazantzakis. Odysseus (Ὀδυσσεύς), on his voyage home must go through the islands of the Sirens (Σειρῆνες), on the Tyrrhenian Sea. A Siren (Σειρήν) was a half-woman half-bird that sung a sweet song. Listening to it, the sailors met their doom as their ships crashed on the rocky shore of the islands.

Heres a virtual movie of Father Christmas (Santa Claus) reading the poem by Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) "Twas the Night Before Christmas" The poem is read definitively by Ernest Hare, and was recorded by Thomas Edison 1920 You can see Clement Clarke Moore reading this poem himself at my main youtube channel poetryanimations at this link.. uk.youtube.com Clement Clarke Moore (July 15, 1779July 10, 1863) is the credited author of A Visit from St. Nicholas (more commonly known today as Twas the Night Before Christmas). Clement Clarke Moore was most famous in his own day as a professor of Oriental and Greek literature at Columbia College (now Columbia University). Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) wrote the poem Twas the night before Christmas also called A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1822. It is now the tradition in many American families to read the poem every Christmas Eve. The poem Twas the night before Christmas has redefined our image of Christmas and Santa Claus. Prior to the creation of the story of Twas the night before Christmas St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, had never been associated with a sleigh or reindeers! The author of the poem Twas the night before Christmas was a reticent man and it is believed that a family friend, Miss H. Butler, sent a copy of the poem to the New York Sentinel who published the poem. The condition of publication was that the author of Twas the night before Christmas was to remain anonymous. The first publication date ...
