GENTLE GIANT - In A Glass House - 1973 Lying down here in the afternoon In my pretty cosy little cushioned room I can talk to all my funny friends in here I was told to rest why ... I am not quite clear Eating flowers growing in the garden where there are tasty tulips and I don't care If I wet my trousers there was no time I had nowhere else to go nowhere else I could find. Staring up at the great big white light. That shines everyday and shines all through the night Hearing voices of the silly friends of mine Always lock the door nurses waiting outside all the time. Hurt myself this morning, Doctor gave me warning sent me to my room and told me that I'm bad. I heard someone saying I think he'll be staying maybe for a long time, Why does everybody else think that I'm mad I heard someone saying I think he'll be staying maybe for a long time and that I'm mad. Lying down here in the afternoon In my pretty cosy little cushioned room I can talk to all my funny friends in here I was told to rest why ... I am not quite clear.
My husband and I planted tulips as soon as we returned from our honeymoon in late October. They're growing, healthy and happy... and early. Here's to hoping that spring is here!

Chicago Botanic Garden President Sophia Siskel and Manager of School and Community Gardening, Eliza Fournier, show novice gardeners and parents interested in having a vegetable garden how to make a raised-bed garden as a two-hour weekend project.
The Keukenhof is a famous flower park northwest of Lisse, a small town south of Haarlem and southwest of Amsterdam. It is located in an area called the "Dune and Bulb Region" (Duin- en Bollenstreek). In the 15th century, the park was a part of the castle Keukenhof and served as a garden. In it were grown ingredients for the kitchen; so it got its name 'Keukenhof'. Nowadays it is a large flower garden where growers from all over the Netherlands and Europe show their products. There are more than 7 million flower bulbs planted annually in the park, like krokussen, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and lilies. Keukenhof is open annually from the last week in March to mid-May. The best time to view the tulips is around mid-April, depending on the weather.

When I'm designing a garden, I always fall back on a few basic principles. One of the most important is establishing a strong framework of small trees, shrubs and perennials as a backdrop. Then I leave the foreground open for planting of seasonal color, this is usually in the form of annuals. And these days, there are so many varieties to choose from, whether you're gardening in sun, or shade. For sun, I like using cool colors, like blue salvia, pale yellow marigolds and white vinca. I also enjoy using petunias in sun, especially these versatile Storm Petunias that self clean. The dark purple ones look great paired up with Kiss Gazania. For shade, lighter colors always seem to stand out better, so I like to use pale colored impatiens, browallia, and this little plant called torenia. Coleus perform great in the shade and I'm particularly fond of a series called Stained Glassworks by The Flower Fields. Now when I plant my annuals, I like to plant in pockets, or drifts, depending on the size of the garden, five to six plants. And I space them eight to ten, maybe twelve inches a part for maximum coverage. One thing you may want to keep in mind is not to fall into a rut of planting the same annuals in the same place year after year. By mixing it up, you can stay one step ahead of pests. Another thing I like to do is under-plant my annuals with bulbs in the fall, so in the spring I have tulips and daffodils coming up through annuals plants, like pansies. It's a great ...
Tulipa (Kingdom Plantae, Division Magnoliophyta, Class Liliopsida, Order Liliales, Family Liliaceae, Genus Tulipa) commonly called Tulip is a genus of about 100 species of bulbous flowering plants in the family Liliaceae. The native range of the species include southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia from Anatolia and Iran in the east to northeast of China. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan. A number of species and many hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, used as pot plants or as fresh cut flowers. The species are perennials from bulbs, the tunicate bulbs are often produced on the ends of stolons and covered with glabrous to variously hairy papery coverings. The species include short low growing plants to tall upright plants, growing from 10 to 70 centimeters (4--27 in) tall. Plants with typically 2 to 6 leaves, with some species having up to 12 leaves. The cauline foliage is strap-shaped, waxy-coated, usually light to medium green and alternately arranged. The blades are somewhat fleshy and linear to oblong in shape. The large flowers are produced on scapes or subscapose stems normally lacking bracts. The stems have no leaves to a few leaves, with large species having some leaves and smaller species have none. Typically species have one flower per stem but a few species have up to four flowers. The colorful and attractive cup shaped flowers have three petals and three sepals, which are most ...
