Michel Martelly needs to make his goals clear to the Haitian people.
Hurricane season is about to get underway in Haiti, where many communities are still devastated by last year's deadly earthquake. Displaced residents live in exposed camps on flat land, sometimes near hillsides bereft of trees that were cut down for charcoal fuel, leaving people exposed to mudslides. Little has been done to help residents prepare for flooding. Pierre Louis Saint Juste, the mayor of the northern town of Gonaives, says residents will have to "find high places and survive on their own". Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Gonaives, Haiti.

Haiti aid groups criticised over growing influence Even before the earthquake that hit the country in January 2010, Haiti's government was not fully functioning and relied on non-governmental organisations to help the people. Now there is mounting criticism about the influence they wield. Karl Jean Louis, project director for Haiti Aid Watchdog, spoke to Al Jazeera about the issue.

The Nepalese UN mission in Haiti could be the source of the cholera deadly outbreak there. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports from Haiti.
Despite the billions of dollars worth of damage caused by the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in January, many of the capital's oldest buildings are still standing. Almost all of Port-au-Prince's "Gingerbread houses" - elaborate wooded buildings, many more than a century old - managed to survive the quake. The buildings were constructed during a time of prosperity in the country and feature an architectural style which fuses European colonial influence with traditional Haitian designs. Now architects and engineers are using its structural design as an example of how the country should be rebuilt. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports from Port-au-Prince. [August 23, 2010]
Hip hop artist and Haitian presidential hopeful Wyclef Jean said on Saturday that if elected, he will work to change Haiti's constitution to allow dual citizenship and give Haitians living abroad the right to vote. (August 14 2010)
How qualified is the hip-hop star for the post and is he even eligible to run? On Wednesday's Riz Khan we speak with Haiti's ambassador-at-large Wyclef Jean and ask: Can a pop star really lead Haiti forward? Harry Fouche, former Consul General of Haiti in New York also joins us.
It has been six months since Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake, prompting an international response which saw billions of dollars pledged for aid and rebuilding. The Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC) was established more than three months ago as the oversight body to ensure aid money is spent effectively, but reconstruction work has yet to start. So far, the only project the IHRC has approved is a $31m request in June, leaving Haitians wondering what is taking it so long to get the job done. Sebastian Walker reports from Port-au-Prince. (July 22, 2010)
After a devastating earthquake struck Haiti in January, countries from across the globe have collectively pledged to the UN almost $10b for the Caribbean nation's reconstruction. But a report by the US senate has found only two per cent of the money was actually received by Haiti. UN officials blame donor countries for failing to follow through on their pledges. From the UN headquarters in New York, Kristen Saloomey reports on the broken aid promises. [July 12]
People in Haiti know they'll be cleaning up a natural disaster for years if not decades. Pierre Garcon, a wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts, has been one source of hope for the country following January's earthquake, CBS News Correspondent Jeff Glor reports.
More than three months after the Haitian earthquake, the UN says its now reached nearly all of the one-and-a-half million displaced people living in emergency shelters. But some say those figures are misleading and dont reflect the realities on the ground. And many Haitians remain angry over their squalid living conditions. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker has more from Port-Au-Prince (29 April, 2010).
An estimated 4000 people in Haiti had an arm or leg amputated after being trapped in the rubble following January's massive earthquake. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports from the capital Port-au-Prince on a whole generation of new amputees who will be needing months, or even years, of rehabilitation as they battle to rebuild their lives. (Mar 29, 2010)
Millions of dollars from around the world are pouring into Haiti to provide basic aid for the earthquake devastated nation. And millions of dollars in foreign investments are also flowing into the country to help it rebuild and shape its future. However, many Haitians see the expansion of foreign companies as a way to take advantage of the widespread poverty plaguing the country, where the unemployment rate is up to 80 per cent. The exploitation concerns come as former US presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush prepare to visit the Caribbean nation on Monday to discuss long-term recovery efforts with Haitian officials. And a part of their plans will be to discuss the expansion of clothing industries in the country - in which workers earn less than $4 a day - one of the lowest wages in the world. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports from the city of Ouanaminthe - home to some of the country's biggest textile businesses. [March 22, 2010]

Disaster specialists say the slow pace of clearing the rubble - and decomposing bodies beneath the debris - from last month's earthquake in Haiti has left residents vulnerable to the spread of diseases such as typhoid and cholera. With the rainy season fast approaching, one expert even warns that there will be more dead people in the next four to six weeks than during the earthquake itself. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Port-au-Prince (22 Feb 2010).

Corruption was a major problem in Haiti even before the massive earthquake that struck the country nearly a month ago, killing some 200000 people. Now reports have emerged that counterfeiters are producing fake food coupons, coming on the heels of revelations that a thriving black market of aid supplies has sprung up. Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from the capital Port-au-Prince on what many have called Haiti's "curse of corruption". (09 Feb 2010)

While a vast foreign aid effort is struggling to meet Haiti's desperate earthquake survivors' needs 17 days after the disaster, the storm-ravaged Haitian city of Gonaives is still struggling to recover following the devastation of Hurricane Hanna two years ago. In the immediate aftermath, over $100m of aid was pledged for Gonaives with agencies from around the world committing to help reconstruct the city. In Gonaives, those who survived the hurricane are piecing together their lives, aware of how precarious their existence is, and still awaiting help. There are signs of reconstruction projects being financed all over the city, however, residents say that after the flood waters receded so too did the urgency. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports from the port city of Gonaives, on whether the Haiti aid effort will be any better this time around. [January, 30, 2010]
