A summary of events concerning the incidents causing major traffic delays in Hampton Roads on July 2, 2009.
Apparently they had the bright idea of doing construction on many roads throughout Suffolk despite being one of the busiest travel weeks! The S62 bus was running nearly an hour late! Then I was hit by delays on the LIRR, as my train had equipment problems. Had no time to eat dinner till I got home. Fortunately the LIRR delays were minimized as our train was given priority and the crew was hauling, so I actually only got home 5 minutes late. But this shows the need for AFFORDABLE long distance transportation within LI. Only the LIRR provides it, but with many single track areas and unreliable diesel equipment, it is inadequate. Hampton Jitney has many buses and is capable right NOW to provide express motorcoach service within Long Island. They choose to leave us stranded. This is a fight that I will keep fighting. Hampton Jitney is one of the ONLY motorcoach services to deny travel between 2 stops, in the NY Metro area. Expect more videos on this very subject. The only real solution is a system similar to NJ. The MTA needs to take over HJ anyway they can, hostile or otherwise. It's in the public interest that Hampton Jitney be taken over. The snobs cannot expect their luxury blue blooded buses to continue stranding us. (after all...there is another company called Hampton Luxury Liner...let the snobs take them) Think about what this means. If HJ was able to carry me to Ronkonkoma, or even Nassau, it'd be an hour or so ride from Riverhead, instead, it winds up being over 4 hours for me to get home. HJ will never learn....the only blue on their buses should be a blue MTA stripe.

Rumblings from the "4th Of July weekend" Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel traffic jam continue to fuel the transportation discussion in our area. Will it impact decisions made "down the road" about the region's traffic situation? What's the latest talk on high-speed rail, the Jordan Bridge rebuilding, rest stop closings? These topics and other current events are explored in another spirited discussion with our editorial roundtable. Joining the voices at the table this week along with host, Cathy Lewis: Don Luzzatto, editorial page managing editor at the Virginian-Pilot; Kimball Payne, reporter from the Daily Press; and political bloggers Vivian Paige and Brian Kirwin.
Stuck at the HRBT is no fun ... unless you have a camera of course! I got stuck a few nights ago driving along at 2am. The following is a mix of pure sleepiness and agitation. Haha...trust me, if you're from Hampton Roads, you KNOW how insane the HRBT traffic can be. PS. Seriously, leave you best guesses! What does, "The world is your oyster" mean?
