amazing song "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)" is a song by English alternative rock band Radiohead. The band wrote and recorded the song as a tribute to the British supercentenarian Harry Patch, who was the last surviving soldier to have fought in the trenches during World War I. The song was self-released on 5 August 2009 as a downloadable single and sold for £1 from the band's website, with all proceeds donated to The Royal British Legion. The song consists of Thom Yorke's singing and a string arrangement composed by Jonny Greenwood. The lyrics are from the perspective of a soldier in World War I, and include modifications of quotations from Patch. Reception to the song was generally positive, with critics praising the song's message and symphonic style. The Patch family also voiced their approval of the song's message and the band's charitable use of its proceeds. en.wikipedia.org i am the only one that got through the others died where ever they fell it was an ambush they came up from all sides give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves i've seen devils coming up from the ground i've seen hell upon this earth the next will be chemical but they will never learn

Henry John "Harry" Patch (17 June 1898 25 July 2009) — known as "the Last Tommy" — was a British supercentenarian, briefly the oldest man in Europe and the last surviving soldier to have fought in the trenches of the First World War.[1] Patch was, with Claude Choules, one of the last two surviving British veterans of the First World War, and along with Frank Buckles and John Babcock, one of the last four worldwide. At the time of his death, aged 111 years, 38 days, Patch was the verified third-oldest man in the world, the oldest man in Europe and one of the 70 oldest men ever. God on high Hear my prayer In my need You have always been there He is young He's afraid Let him rest Heaven blessed. Bring him home Bring him home Bring him home. He's like the son I might have known If God had granted me a son. The summers die One by one How soon they fly On and on And I am old And will be gone. Bring him peace Bring him joy He is young He is only a boy You can take You can give Let him be Let him live If I die, let me die Let him live Bring him home Bring him home Bring him home.

Object of the Month - August 2009 Portrait of Harry Patch. Portrait of Harry Patch (1898 - 2009) by Bill Leyshon, the Somerset-born artist. This portrait was commissioned by the Western Daily Press in 2007. Harry Patch, of Wells, Somerset, was the last surviving British soldier to have fought in the trenches during the First World War. He was born at Combe Down, near Bath, on 17 June 1898, and was called up in October 1916, serving as a private in the Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry. He fought in the Battle of Passchendaele as part of a Lewis Gun team. On 22 September 1917 he was seriously wounded by shrapnel from a shell which killed his three closest friends. He did not talk about the war for 80 years, but then contributed to war documentaries, and returned to Belgium for the 90th anniversary of Passchendaele. His memoirs of life in war and peace, The Last Fighting Tommy, were published in August 2007. Harry Patch died on 25 July 2009 aged 111 years. 'It was just shell holes, and the team made its way forward in a line. It was absolutely sickening to see your own dead and wounded, some calling for stretcher-bearers, others semi-conscious and beyond all help, and the German wounded lying about too, and you couldnt stop to help them.' Harry Patch : A Tribute One by one by one his years like his fellows fallen back in time as once for all they fell in line Hats off to Harry a gentleman of many years whose yesterdays are ours to carry now into tomorrow as one who has outlived his sons now slips away to join the friends whose lives were war ripped ragged With Harry Patch a generation passes, a silent banner that unfolds revealing ways for us to humbly follow Past master of the Lewis gun entrenched and fearful bathed in mud and christened in his comrade's blood a lesson still for all to see as war itself and not the Hun was Harry's hated enemy He swore a pact with gunner crew when faced with hell that they should use their skill to wound their foe but not to kill As donkeys once all dressed as fools and pressed perverse deluded rules upon the Tommy lion pack the sacrifice was cruel to share a smoke was more profound than any words that could or can be spoken duty steadfast honour grief we might choke as they upon the day that dawns the fresh cut green of rising bile the taste of blood cut swelling tune on blackened bitter tongue With Harry Patch a generation passes, a silent banner that unfolds revealing ways for us to humbly follow One by one by one his years like his fellows fallen back in time as once for all they fell in line Hats off to Harry a gentleman of many years whose yesterdays are ...
The last journey of Harry Patch. Carried to his final resting place to be buried in the soil of his beloved Monkton Combe near where he was born. The day was wet, though not as wet as Passchendaele. The earth was damp, not like the the mud at Passchendaele. His friends were there not like those who died at Passchendaele. Harry, your life was a silver thread which carried the memory of a million dead, your message was of love and reconciliation. We salute you.
(CLICK MORE INFO) PLEASE READ THE LYRICS as you listen, they are included below: LYRICS: "i am the only one that got through the others died where ever they fell it was an ambush they came up from all sides give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves i've seen devils coming up from the ground i've seen hell upon this earth the next will be chemical but they will never learn" Another thing I'd like to say is all war is bad war, no matter what side you're on. It doesn't matter. Children, women, and men are still going to die young, and for nothing but the will of power. And what is that, when we all have the gift of mind? BUY @ download.waste.uk.com

This video is a tribute to Harry Patch, the last British veteran of the First World War, and the last man to have seen action in the trenches at Passchendaele (also called the Third Battle of Ypres). Harry died this summer and will be buried on the 6 of August 2009. The song is called Harry Patch (in memory of) by Radiohead. Radiohead's frontman, Thom Yorke, was inspired to write the song after hearing a radio interview by Harry in 2005. the lyrics (based on Harry's own words) are: "I am the only one that got through The others died where ever they fell It was an ambush They came up from all sides Give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves I've seen devils coming up from the ground I've seen hell upon this earth The next will be chemical but they will never learn." The song can be downloaded from the Radiohead website at: download.waste.uk.com All proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion. Harry's autobiography (assisted by Richard Van Emden) called 'The Last Fighting Tommy' is published by Bloomsbury Books (2007). It's worth reading.

my tribute to the Last Fighting Tommy, Harry Patch who died aged 111 on the 25/7/09. I used a direct Harry quote "War is just organised murder", the rest of the words and tune are my own reflection of Harry's anti war sentiments. The final verse points up the fact that he was never honoured in his own country although the political class see fit to honour celebrity chefs, badly behaved sportsmen and failed bankers. The French to their great credit awarded Harry the Legion d'Honneur. Dedicated to my Grandfather who fought at Gallipoli and the Somme but never spoke about it.
A tribute to Harry Patch and Henry Allingham who sadly passed away this week and last week. Harry Patch died 25th July 2009 Henry Allingham died 18th July 2009 Rest in Peace Sirs and Thank you.
Going Over The Top............. Never forget it. We crawled, couldnt stand up - a sniper would have you. I came across a Cornishman, he must have been from A or B companies who were the assault companies when we went over. C and D, we were support. I came across a Cornishman, he was ripped from his shoulder to his waist - shrapnel. Now a bullet wound is clean, shrapnel will tear you all to pieces. He was laying there in a pool of blood. As we got to him, he said, Shoot me. He was beyond all human aid. Before we would pull out the revolver to shoot him, he died. I was with him in the last seconds of his life. hen he went from this life, to whatever is beyond. Now what I saw in the way of sights at Passchendaele and at Pilkem - the wounded lying about asking you for help - we didnt have the knowledge, the equipment or the time to spend with them. I lost all my faith in the Church of England. And when that fellah died, he just said one word: Mother. It wasnt a cry of despair. It was a cry or surprise and joy. I think - although I wasnt allowed to see her - I am sure his mother was in the next world to welcome him. And he knew it. I was just allowed to see that much and no more. And from that day until today - and now Im nearly 106 years old - I shall always remember that cry and I shall always remember that death is not the end. Youve got a memory. Youve got a brain about the size of a tea cup. Ive got a memory that goes back for 80 or 90 years and I think that memory goes ...
