Niklas Kronwall gets hit knee on knee with Georges Laraque - from Detroit Red Wings @ Montreal Canadiens on Nov 21, 2009 - wingsfights.com
This is the famous incident between Tie Domi of the Maple Leafs and Scott Niedermayer of the Devils. It's from game four of the team's 2001 second round playoff series. In the dying seconds of the game, Niedermayer viciously headbutts Domi's elbow. To make a bad situation even worse, Niedermayer then lays down on the ice for a nap, refusing to leave until they bring him a portable bed. As a direct result of this incident, Domi was unable to play again until well into the next season. This is from game five of the 2002 first round series between the Leafs and Islanders. Quinn mixed up Michael Renberg and Robert Reichel on his lineup card. Islanders coach Peter Laviolette waits until the first whistle to inform the referees, forcing the Leafs to play a man short for the entire game. Hard to see how Quinn could make this mistake. Everyone knew that Reichel was an underachieving, overpaid center, while Renberg was an underachieving, overpaid winger. This is Darcy Tucker's infamous low hit on Michael Peca during the Leafs/Islanders first round series in 2002. Peca missed several months with a torn knee ligament and swore revenge in the media. However, the two made up years later when Peca signed with the Leafs and went on to become friends. There was no penalty on the play. Monents afer absorbing a hard hit from Andre Roy, an annoyed Tie Domi catches Martin Havlat with his head down and basically murders him. This is from game one of the Leafs/Sens 2001 playoff series. Domi was given a penalty for interference. He learned his lesson, and never hit anybody with a late blindside shot ever again. Niklas Kronwall of Detroit Red Wings Knocks Martin Havlat of Chicago Blackhawks unconscious Friday, May 22nd, 2009 Rule 56 - Interference The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession. 56.4 Major Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a major penalty, based on the degree of violence, to a player or goalkeeper guilty of interfering with an opponent (see 56.5). 56.5 Game Misconduct Penalty When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed. In my opinion, I thought it was a clean hit, but technically Havlat never touched the puck. So, the refs did make the right call. Here's a link to the NHL Rules: www.nhl.com
Detroit's Niklas Kronwall unleashed the most devastating hit of the postseason on Martin Havlat in game 3 of the Western Conference Finals, who had his head down trying to find a loose puck in his skates. From NHL Fanhouse: Kronwall may have been guilty of charging, but that's highly debatable. Saying he was guilty of interference, as determined by referees Dave Jackson and Dan O'Halloran, is simply an unacceptable stretch of logic. Yes, Havlat looked to be completely out of it, even well after the hit. Yes, it's unfortunate for him and the Blackhawks, and no one wishes an injury on a competitor at this time of year. None of this, however, means that Kronwall deserved a penalty. He committed to throwing a hit, and he did so without knowing that Havlat would render himself vulnerable by putting his head down trying to play a puck that got lost in his skates. Instead of the "nothing" he probably should have gotten, Kronwall received a five-minute major penalty and an early shower. It probably won't be any more than that, but you never know what will happen with the nhl's Wheel of Discipline. From David Staples of The Cult Of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal: The only thing wrong with the Kornwall hit was that someone truly deserving of such a masterpiece such as Jordan Tootoo, Steve Ott, Matt Cooke, Sean Avery, Ben Eager, Adam Burish or Robyn Regehr wasnt on the receiving end of it. The puck came around the boards to Havlat and shortly after it arrived in his skates, Kronwall ...
