March 11, 2011: Civil defense sirens could be heard throughout Hawaii as the state prepares for tsunami waves resulting from a massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan.
One of the world's most active volcanoes in Hawaii sent plumes of smoke and and shot lava up to 65 feet (19 metres) high into the air on Sunday. Scientists said a new vent had opened at the Pu'u O'o crater which caused lava to spray into the air. It occurred along the middle of Kilauea Volcano's east rift zone. On April 29, 2010, activists Mitch Kahle and Kevin Hughes were assaulted by Ben Villaflor, the Senate Sergeant-At-Arms, and State Sheriff's Deputies, for objecting to unconstitutional Christian prayers used to begin each session of the Hawaii State Legislature. Hughes was injured in the attack and was taken to the hospital for x-rays and treatment. Kahle was arrested and prosecuted, but was ultimately vindicated when Judge Leslie Hayashi found Kahle "NOT GUILTY" and ruled that: "The Senate's [Christian] prayers violate the constitutional separation of church and state." The California Maritime Academy's Training Ship Golden Bear called Honolulu at the end of June, 2010 at the midway point of four months of summer training voyages on the Pacific. The "changeover" call enables students and crew from the first two-month voyage to debark and a second contingent of students and faculty to come on board for a repeat transit to Asia - Japan, Korea and Guam and then return to the Vallejo, CA campus following a call in Seattle at the end of August. While in Honolulu, local TV stations chatted with students and alumni about the school and the training experience.
