US Army Criminal Investigation Command spokesman Chris Grey told a news conference Thursday at the Texas base that additional charges may also be filed against Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. WASHINGTON (AP) — Military officials say the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 and wounding 29 in last week's shooting rampage at his military post in Texas will face 13 charges of premeditated murder under the military's legal system. The decision makes him eligible for the death penalty if convicted. A formal announcement about the charges against Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is expected later Thursday. Two US military officials described the charges to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the case publicly. The officials said it is not yet decided whether to charge Hasan with a 14th count of murder related to the death of the unborn child of a pregnant shooting victim. Secret Talks as Israel, Iran Discuss Nuclear Deal نشست ایران و اسرائیل بر سر موضوع هسته ای JERUSALEM: Israel has confirmed its atomic expert met an Iranian official over the chances of declaring the Middle East a nuclear-free zone, in the first direct talks between the archfoes in 30 years, held under the auspices of an initiative of Kevin Rudd. The spokeswoman for Israel's Atomic Energy Commission, Yael Doron, said yesterday its representative had held several meetings with an Iranian official ''in a regional context'' and under Australia's auspices. Iran denied it had held any nuclear talks with Israel. Fairfax media first reported last week that Australia had helped accomplish the seemingly impossible - bringing Israel and Iran into the same room to talk about nuclear issues. It said there were serious discussions at the gathering and that the idea of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East had been floated but no major breakthroughs were reported. Ms Doron declined to give details of the meetings. The newspaper Haaretz said the officials discussed the chances of declaring a nuclear ...
A Colorado sheriff said he was pursuing criminal charges in the case of a 6-year-old boy who vanished into the rafters of his garage while the world thought he was zooming through the sky in a flying saucer-like helium balloon. The boy's parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene, met with Larimer County investigators for much of the afternoon, but Sheriff Jim Alderden didn't say who would be charged or what the charges would be. Alderden didn't call Thursday's hours-long drama a hoax, but he expressed disappointment that he couldn't level more serious charges in the incident, which sent police and the military scrambling to save young Falcon Heene as millions of worried television viewers watched. "We were looking at Class 3 misdemeanor, which hardly seems serious enough given the circumstances," Alderden said. "We are talking to the district attorney, federal officials to see if perhaps there aren't additional federal charges that are appropriate in this circumstance." He said deputies were seeking a search warrant for the family's home, and there would be more information at a news conference Sunday. After the sheriff went inside, Richard Heene and his wife walked out. As reporters yelled questions, all Heene said was, "I was talking to the sheriff's department just now." He then walked to his car with his wife and a friend, and they drove away. The Heenes were expected to speak to reporters outside their home later Saturday, after a strange day that began with Richard Heene ...

The more America learns about the Balloon escapade over Colorado, the more puzzling it becomes. As Rick Salinger reports, the Colorado father recently promised a 'big announcement.'
Promising a "major announcement" to reporters, Richard Heene, the father of "Balloon Boy," instead holds a rather truncated press conference instructing the press to place questions ina box and he will get back to them. "I have no idea what the news is saying," he tells the press. "I don't have cable!" He added that the experience with his son Falcon was "absolutely no hoax."
The father of a Colorado boy feared missing in a helium balloon tells the media to put questions in a box at his doorstep. Richard Heene says he will try answering them later. But he denies the balloon incident was a stunt. (Oct. 17)

UPDATED 3:40pm pst - Oct 15th, 2009: This was posted as a response to the very interesting live news event of young six year old Falcon Heene, a child believed to be floating in a custom made UFO-shaped helium balloon high above the sky of Colorado. As the story unfolded, the news agencies were rapt with shots of the balloon tilting and flying through the air and for a time, the whole world believed that a six year old was trapped inside the small space within. As it started to lose helium the craft (after a couple hours) began to sink lower and lower, the whole time a helicopter's camera followed (what the world thought) was a boy trapped inside, with comments of him cold and afraid being transmitted on every channel. Once it hit 500 feet about the ground, the craft began to circle, emergency crews standing by. Each channel trying to keep up with the news, getting ready to black out the screen if the unthinkable happened. Twitter became overloaded and news updates continued to come out fast and furious. Everyone stood by and watched the landing whether on television or the web, a collective breathe being held as they searched the vehicle for young Falcon. Tearing at the balloon, deflating the helium, first with a shovel then with other tools, we waited. Minutes passed and then the announcement came that no one was aboard. So where was Falcon? I wrote this song, during the event - not so much as a tribute to instant fame or recognition, but a chance to tell the story ...
