Already 199 runs in front, England's batsmen went into one-day mode to extend their lead. Gooch hit hard and hit often at the top of the order, scoring another hundred (123 from 113 balls) and hitting 13 fours and four sixes, including some gigantic strikes off the legspin of Hirwani. Along the way he became the highest individual runscorer in a Test match and the first man to score a triple hundred and a century in any first-class game. His opening comrade Michael Atherton (72 from 114 balls) joined the party, having missed out in the first innings. The only highlight for the Indians was a spectacular running catch by 17-year-old Sachin Tendulkar, to dismiss Allan Lamb. England declared at 4/272 late in the fourth day, setting the tourists an unlikely 472 for victory. Match scorecard: www.cricinfo.com Yours in cricket, The Third Ump
The crowd, the commentators and even the opposition was shocked when Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar won the toss and elected to bowl on a typical Adelaide batting paradise. With Australia piling on 528 runs in just over five sessions, Gavaskar undoubtedly rued his decision - though it may have been partly justified if Kirmani hadn't dropped Graeme Wood before the left-hander had scored. The Australian openers added 84 but the true highlight came later through Kim Hughes' masterly 214, his highest Test score. With its impeccable cover-driving off both front and back foot, Hughes' knock was one of the most attractive Test innings seen at the Adelaide Oval, if not in Australia. More sedate but just as important was Wood's 125 and a half-century from Allan Border. The spinners, Dilip Doshi and Shivlal Yadav, toiled bravely for India and took seven wickets between them. With England in front and Tony Greig known for his aggressive captaincy instincts, most expected England to chase quick runs when they took the field at the start of day three. But John Edrich and Barry Wood batted patiently, weathering the inevitable storm from Lillee and Thomson then slowly building on England's 47-run lead. The hitherto out-of-form Wood soaked up 161 balls in scoring his fifty, before falling to Thomson. Edrich batted at a similar pace and held the innings together, hitting 175 before holing out off Ashley Mallett. Steele contributed another 45, Graham Gooch 31 in his second Test, Greig (41) and Woolmer (31) hit out at the end.Greig declared at 7/436, setting Australia an unlikely 484 for victory in just over four sessions. They launched an attempt and reached 3/329, however a thunderstorm on the final day saw two hours of play lost, which effectively dashed their chances. a video for ab de villiers south Africa's young talented batsmen and athletic fielder. Few Test debutants can have been asked to play so many roles in such a short space of time as AB de Villiers, and fewer still can have risen to the challenge with such alacrity that, at the tender age of 21, he was already being regarded as the future of South African cricket. A product of Afrikaans Hoer Seunsskool in Pretoria, de Villiers was born to be a sportsman - although such was his natural talent, tennis, golf, cricket or rugby could have been his calling. Cricket won out, however, and after a prodigious spell in the South Africa Under-19 team, he made his debut for Titans in 2003-04, racking up five half-centuries in his 438 runs. He earned his call-up for the first Test against England the following season, and after a composed debut as an opening batsman, he was handed the wicketkeeping gloves for the second Test in Durban, which he helped save with a maiden Test half-century from No. 7. By the end of the series, however, he was back at the top of the order, and after falling eight runs short of a deserved century in the first innings at Centurion, he made instant amends second-time around. His development continued at a rate of knots in the Caribbean, where he helped seal the series with a wonderful 178 at Bridgetown. On South Africa's tour of Australia at the end of 2005 he managed just 152 runs at 25.33 - despite playing Shane Warne well - and was sent home ahead of the ...

tinyurl.com Australia lost at the most famous ground in England, Lord's, when they were bundled out for 215. Some of the players admitted to stage-fright.And now, with the urn on the line and expectations at fever pitch, the batsmen once again have cringed and crashed. To collapse from 0-73 to lose 10-87 in 138 minutes when so much was at stake was disappointing at best.Once again, it seemed, that the batsmen had stage-fright. They were tentative, suspicious of the pitch, overawed by line-and-length bowling. They played without natural flair, were bogged down in a fashion more renowned by Australian bowlers rather than the English.Excuses count for nothing at the end of the series. The pitch is sub-standard by normal Oval expectations. The ball burst through the surface on occasions, yes. But it did not career violently at the batsmen's throats, or literally roll along the ground. To watch Shane Watson "gardening" suspiciously after almost every ball led to only one outcome - every Australian batsman's mind was consumed by what might happen, instead of playing each ball on its merits. As a consequence, rarely was a shot played in anger and Australia allowed England to dictate terms. The loss of 15 wickets in a day suggests that runs will be harder to score as this match progresses and England rightfully is short-priced favourite to win the match, and reclaim the Ashes.ut all is not lost. Not yet. If Australia can fight back with the ball and restrict England's lead to 300 ...

Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly did not have to prove themselves to the nation, says India Inside report. Watch it!
"Close opened with the 39-year-old John Edrich. Michael Holding, Andy Roberts and Wayne Daniel, a trio of fast bowlers, pounded them for two and a half hours. It was one of the most brutal displays of fast bowling ever seen. Wisden said, "Close and Edrich defended their wickets and themselves against fast bowling, which was frequently too wild and hostile to be acceptable". Close himself said, "It must have been the worst wicket I experienced in Test cricket. The faster the West Indians bowled the worse it got because the balls broke through the surface of the wicket. They exploded and flew at you." With this innings of 20 runs off 108 balls in 162 minutes Close completed his Test career, under a vicious barrage, standing tall and taking the damage as he had against the West Indies at Lord's 13 years earlier. After that, both Close and Edrich were dropped for the fourth Test. The interval between Close's first and last Test matches was 27 years, the second-longest after Wilfred Rhodes." wikipedia.com
