For those of you who were unable to attend my lecture, I am posting this video of my encore presentation of this educational talk from the 3rd annual Nerd Nite Nerdtacular as a public service, to save you from burning in nuclear fire. For more information on Nerd Nite, go to: www.nerdnite.com If you are wondering why there are laser dots all over the place, other than my own, it's because the evening was sponsored, in part, by CBS' "The Big Bang Theory," and the brain trust at their marketing department thought it'd be a good idea to hand out "Big Bang Theory" branded laser pointers to a bunch of people drinking alcohol with a large projection screen in front of them.

An incredible breakthrough. Genetic entrepreneur Craig Venter and his team of researchers have created new life by developing the first synthetic living cell. Scientists have created the world's first synthetic life form in a landmark experiment that paves the way for designer organisms that are built rather than evolved. The controversial feat, which has occupied 20 scientists for more than 10 years, was described by one researcher as "a defining moment in biology". Craig Venter, the pioneering US geneticist behind the experiment, said the achievement heralds the dawn of a new era in which new life is made to benefit humanity, starting with bacteria that churn out biofuels, soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and even manufacture vaccines. However critics, including some religious groups, condemned the work, with one organization warning that artificial organisms could escape into the wild and cause environmental havoc or be turned into biological weapons. Others said Venter was playing God. The new organism is based on an existing bacterium that causes mastitis in goats, but at its core is an entirely synthetic genome that was constructed from chemicals in the laboratory. The single-celled organism has four "watermarks" written into its DNA to identify it as synthetic and help trace its descendants back to their creator, should they go astray. "We were ecstatic when the cells booted up with all the watermarks in place," Dr Venter told the Guardian. "It's a living ...

Dr. Blaire Van Valkenburgh, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Darwin Evolving Lecture Series from 11/18/2009
The appearance of life put the Earth under new management, and life has continuously remodeled the atmosphere, oceans and land masses. The Earths climate and related life support systems are changing today in ways and at rates that are markedly different from those experienced in recorded human history. 21st century biology must provide the knowledge needed to adapt to these changes, and to recognize possible tipping points well in advance of the onset of environmental degradation, economic hardship, or pandemic disease. The future demands a trans- disciplinary approach to research and education that reaches beyond the science of traditional disciplines to prepare a new generation of scientists and educators to communicate science as a precise, predictive and reliable way of understanding life and adapting to a changing world. James P. Collins was appointed Assistant Director for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF) effective October 15, 2005. Collins is also currently Virginia M. Ullman Professor of Natural History and the Environment in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU). Collins served as director of the Population Biology and Physiological Ecology program at the National Science Foundation from 1985 to 1986. Collins received his BS from Manhattan College in 1969 and his Ph.D. from The University of Michigan in 1975. Collins has delivered the Pettingill Lecture in Natural History at The University of Michigan ...
To purchase this program please visit www.greatpacificmedia.com Segment from the program Protists: The Origins of Eukaryotic Diversity. DVD Description Our Protist DVD explores the evolutionary history of eukaryotes while examining the incredible diversity that exists in kingdom Protista reflected in organisms such as Euglena which have both animal and plant-like qualities. The program then looks at animal-like zooflagellates, sarcodines, ciliates, and sporozoans; fungus-like slime molds, and plant-like dinoflagellates, diatoms, and englenoids. Multicellular red, brown and green algae are examined and why modern biology places all three in kingdom Protista rather than kingdom Plantae explained.
Global Problems of Population Growth (MCDB 150) The idea that "life begins at conception" is not a scientific one. Since the disproof of 'spontaneous generation' (1668-1859), we have known that life only derives from life. Life arose billions of years ago and has continued since as a cycle. Assigning a beginning to a cycle (like the year) is arbitrary. The Bible describes the cycle as "Dust to Dust." Exodus describes a forced abortion as a property crime, but taking the life of the mother as a capital crime. The New Testament does not refer to abortion. Ben Major, a Rutgers University undergraduate student (Cell Biology & Neuroscience / History, '10), describes his Study Abroad experience living in Turkey, and traveling through parts of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Ben studied History at Koç Üniversitesi in Istanbul, Turkey, and spent much of his time traveling across Turkey, and into other countries, including Greece, Armenia, Georgia, Jordan, and Egypt.
Biology without evolution is natural history, not biology. There is a great deal of important information in natural history that should be taught, but evolution is the unifying idea that ties it all together, allowing one not only to know the facts but to understand them and to know where the facts come from. Teaching biology without evolution would be like teaching chemistry without the periodic table of the elements.
Principles of Evolution, Ecology and Behavior (EEB 122) The lecture presents an overview of evolutionary biology and its two major components, microevolution and macroevolution. The idea of evolution goes back before Darwin, although Darwin thought of natural selection. Evolution is driven by natural selection, the correlation between organism traits and reproductive success, as well as random drift. The history of life goes back approximately 3.7 billion years to a common ancestor, and is marked with key events that affect all life Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2009.
