Google Tech Talk December 4, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Manuel Pérez-Quiñones. Personal Information Management (PIM) practices are the behaviors that we follow when we organize our information. This often includes emails, documents, bookmarks, pictures, etc. Research in PIM has identified a common set of activities that require support: encountering information, organizing information, filing/archiving, and reusing information. Different tools must provide different kinds of support for each one of these activities. PIM practices become easier if the organization provides some infrastructure to alleviate the difficulty of these activities. But a larger value is that the organization can leverage these personal practices to improve the effectiveness of others and to capture that elusive corporate knowledge in an easy way. In this talk, I will describe previous work in PIM and highlight how some of the PIM practices can be supported and leveraged from the organization point of view. Manuel A. Pérez-Quiñones is Associate Dean and Director of the Office for Graduate Recruiting and Diversity Initiatives at the Graduate School, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, and a member of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech. Pérez-Quiñones holds a DSc in Computer Science from The George Washington University. This is even true in countries where the subjects of these videos were from. In countries like Pakistan (and many others, viz. Google Tech Talk April 9, 2009 ABSTRACT "Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of NASA: The Giants on Whose Shoulders We Stood" Why explore? Among the many reasons, we explore because it fuels a useful scientific and technological foundation that enables a flourishing economy. Taking humans to the edge of their known world both requires new technology, and returns radical new insights into the world. Without exploration, science and engineering became routine and uninteresting. The NASA Ames Research Center, which is nearly 70 years old, has contributed scientific and engineering expertise to the exploration missions at the heart of NASA over its 50 year history. Ames has made major contributions to the manned and unmanned space programs, including Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, the Space Shuttle, aeronautics, lunar science, planetary exploration, Mars, and the prospects of life in the universe. Ames' most significant contribution to science and technology, though, has been in developing the careers of masterful researchers. This presentation will emphasize the aerospace giants who fundamentally shaped the history of NASA Ames. Presented by John W. Boyd: John W. Boyd serves as Senior Advisor to the Center Director, the Senior Advisor for History and the Center Ombuds. Jack maintains his Virginia lilt. He is a graduate of George Washington High School in Danville, Virginia; of the aeronautical engineering program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia ...

For educational purposes, this Sci-Fi story repeats itself throughout real human history. In philosophy, Socrates questioned authority and died for it. Pythagoras (inventor of the Pythagorean theorem) was deemed nuts and exiled on a ship if I remember my math/history lesson correctly. Galileo (astronomer) was sent to a life of house arrest (by the holy factions) saying the Earth revolves around the sun, contrary to religious beliefs that Earth/we are the center of the universe. (Everything IS the center of the universe, but I'll save that for another time) It may take years, decades, or even centuries but when truth becomes known and accepted, there is no stopping it. The power factions, (after the time of acceptance passes) the leaders will either change or conform and/or create ways to alter their views in order to continue their power as generations later never question or learn from their ancestor's history, ignorantly believing, "This new thought/idea/theory/tragedy, etc. couldn't happen today because, "Things are different now!" That, my friends, is "Cognitive Dissonance" at its absolute best! My thought involving this is technology may boom, but emotions are still primitive. In other words, "It's still the same sh$t, different generation." -Alien Orthodox-

Sweeney today announced that they have secured $54.524 million in the 2008-2009 state budget to fund much-needed infrastructure improvement projects, including a new $28.9 million School of Business building, at the 96-year-old Farmingdale State College campus. Senator Fuschillo, (R-Merrick) said, "I am very pleased to secure this funding for Farmingdale State College to support these much-needed campus modernization projects. Founded in 2000, The Azalea International Folk Fair was created with the clear and definite mission of serving as an invaluable educational resource to augment the social studies curriculum in South Georgia. The images and illustrations portrayed in school textbooks can be limited, abstract, or remote. We envision a project that literally brings the world to our doorsteps and provides a concrete expression of the worlds many traditions, cultures, and arts to supplement school textbooks and lessons. We began in 2000 with a three-hour program at the Valdosta-Lowndes Public Library called the Chinese Cultural Reflection that allowed students to explore the richness of the world's oldest living civilization and the social customs of today's modern China. In 2004, we were fortunate enough to form enriching friendships and working partnerships with members of Valdostas Asian communities. United by a spirit of caring and giving, we worked together to create a program entitled the Asian Cultural Experience to tell a broader story of Asian culture. In 2007, with an unwavering sense of purpose and a strong measure of confidence developed as a result of eight successful years and much valuable experience, we decided to expand the scope of our program to include Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and the rest of the global community. In keeping with our expanded mission, we gave the 2007 event a new title: The Azalea International Folk Fair. In 2008, both Georgia State Senate and ...
