This was a complete "head stretch" to absorb and adopt. Kikx was soaked in a lot of previous history and styles yet it was extremely focussed and knew what it wanted to do. It stylised itself as a Post Punk, New Wave band integrating influences from Glam Rock, William S. Burroughs, European arts, fashion and design, the visual arts, experimental media and new music technology as well as traditional rock and roll instruments. The performances were provocative, cutting edge, sharp, sophisticated and had touches of Kabuki imagery. The band used mediums of recording, photography, graphics, video and performance with their original music and selective covers of other songs. Kikx were a reflection of minimalist electronic and "art school" bands at the time such as Kraftwork, Television, Gang of Four, The Slits, Stranglers, The Ramones, Ultravox and Devo. Previous influences came from The New York Dolls, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground. The band worked extensively, rehearsing ...

In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Jay Cooper, a music lawyer based in Los Angeles, reviews the history of previous shifts in how recorded music was distributed to consumers (piano rolls, LP, CD, DVD, etc.) and shares his thoughts on how the fundamental difference of digital distribution from all prior models and media will change the nature of how the music business sells, distributes, and collects revenue for recorded music.
Sometimes machinery have ghosts, other times the little buggers are more easily understood. Synthesizers played are: Arrick Robotics modular Ensoniq FIZMO Clavia Nord Lead 2X Korg Kaossilator 3 GForce Mtron XLN Audio Addictive Drums Guitar is Gibson Les Paul Special. Video editing and mangling done in Apple Final Cut Express. Music recorded into Steinberg Cubase 4. Robotic monkeys with cymbals are helpful drummers in case you need them. The machinery is a Gray vertical turning systems (VTS) CNC lathe with a CamSoft custom control by Texagon Industries. A General Electric M1050 control with a punch tape reader and a General Numeric tape puncher/reader. The tape punch technology is many decades old but still reliable. It is unique in that not many working CNC factories still use this out dated media. We still have it in case of a failure with the normal PC based part program storage and retrieval. Recently I had to use this as a backup method and I made a video of it for posterity. The Gray machine was the last of a series of super heavy-duty massive turret lathes, built after Warner & Swasey bought them out. There are only a hand full of these giant lathes still in use. The one we have is currently in a state of rebuild and retrofit with newer drives and controls, but this video displays it at a time when the PC based control and older glitchy servo drives (HiAk) were running. The machine was entirely unpredictable and would do very unexpected things. A very dangerous and ...

This tutorial covers the underlying principles germane to binaural perception, simulation, recording, and reproduction. It includes demonstrations as well as recorded audio/visual examples. During the winter and spring of 1931-32, Bell Telephone Laboratories, in cooperation with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, undertook a series of tests of musical reproduction using the most advanced apparatus obtainable at that time. The objectives were to determine how closely an acoustic facsimile of an orchestra could be approached using both stereo loudspeakers and binaural reproduction. Detailed documents from the Bell Telephone archives serve as a basis for describing the results and problems revealed while creating the binaural demonstrations. Since these historic events, interest in binaural recording and reproduction has grown in areas such as sound field recording, acoustic research, sound field simulation, audio for electronic games, music listening, and artificial reality. Each of theses technologies has its own technical concerns involving transducers, environmental simulation, human perception, position sensing, and signal processing. Presented by Robert Schulein. AES Members can watch the full-length high resolution version of this tutorial on the AES Tutorials page: www.aes.org

Michel Petrucciani came from an Italo-French family with a musical background. His father Tony played guitar and his brother Louis played bass. Michel was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, which is a genetic disease that causes brittle bones and in his case short stature. It is also often linked to pulmonary ailments. In his early career his father and brother occasionally carried him, literally, because he could not walk far on his own unaided. In certain respects though he considered it an advantage as it got rid of distractions, like sports, that other boys tended to become involved in.[1] At an early age he became an enthusiast of Duke Ellington and wished to become a pianist like him. Although he trained for years as a classical pianist, jazz remained his main interest. He gave his first professional concert at 13. At this point in his life he was still quite fragile and had to be carried to and from the piano. His size meant that he required aids to reach the piano's pedals, but his hands were average in length. This had its advantages, however: at the start of his career Petrucciani's manager would often smuggle him into hotel rooms in a suitcase in a bid to save money. By the age of 18 he was part of a successful trio. He moved to the US in 1982, where he successfully encouraged Charles Lloyd to resume playing actively. On February 22, 1985, with Petrucciani cradled in his arms, Lloyd walked onto the stage at Town Hall in New York City and sat him on his piano ...

For Uncle Larry, Elliott Randall (born 1947) is an American guitarist, most known for being a session musician with popular artists. Randall has played the well-known guitar solos from Steely Dan's hit "Reelin' in the Years" and Fame. Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has said that Randall's solo on "Reelin' in the Years" is his favorite guitar solo of all-time [1]. The solo was ranked as the 40th best guitar solo of all-time by the readers of Guitar World magazine [2] and the 8th best guitar solo by Q4 Music . Randall began taking piano lessons at age five. At nine, in 1956, he switched to guitar. In 1963, as a sixteen-year-old, Randall met Richie Havens in Greenwich Village and began gigging. Randall did some early work behind The Capris and The Ronnettes and by 1964 was recording "small-time" demos. Between 1966 and 1967 he was a music teacher in Ohio. Upon his return to New York, he began working as a staff musician for the Musicor record company. He began recording with some friends around 1968, including Tim Rose and demo recordings with Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who at the time were with Jay and the Americans. In 1969 he joined the band Seatrain, opting for that band rather than joining Wilson Pickett in Muscle Shoals. In 1970, Randall was signed to the Robert Stigwood Organization, which managed Cream, The Bee Gees, John Mayall, and The Staples Singers. He formed a band called Randall's Island, who recorded a few albums on Polydor. In 1972 The ...
