This is a quick (and shaky hand-held) submission on the Alcala Mission in San Diego, California. Founded in 1769 by Father Junipero Serra, this mission was the first in California in what was then New Spain. The Franciscans settled California and established the missions to covert Native Americans into Christians. They used both forceful and friendly means of attracting the California Natives to the faith. They often risked their lives to build the missions in hostile regions where the natives were not interested in being converted. They were willing to be martyrs for Spain and the expansion of the Catholic church. The California missions span a 530 mile Camino Real or Royal Highway from San Diego to Sonoma.

Port Matters: Episode 23. A public art project honoring the thousands of San Diegans who worked in the once-thriving tuna canning industry will be dedicated by the Port of San Diego. "The Cannery Workers Tribute-Parque del Sol," is located at the southwest corner of Cesar Chavez Parkway and Crosby Road, near Cesar Chavez Park. The site was the location where many workers took a break from the canneries that were housed in what is now the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding/Continental Maritime property. From 1912 to 1986, the property was occupied by tuna canning companies such as Premier Packing Company, International Packing Corporation, Van Camp Packing Company, Westgate Sea Products Company, Hopkins Inc., Westgate-California Foods and Bumble Bee Seafoods. Other nearby canneries included the California Tuna Canning Company and High Seas Tuna Pack Company. Full story: bit.ly

[edit] Criminal activities The Mexican Mafia is an organization involved in extortion, drug trafficking, and murder, both in and outside the prison system.[6] According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Mexican Mafia had arranged for contract killings to be carried out by the Aryan Brotherhood, a white prison gang. Both the Mexican Mafia and the Aryan Brotherhood are mutual enemies of the African-American gang Black Guerilla Family.[11] The first prison gang street execution in Los Angeles was committed by the Mexican Mafia in 1971.[8] Responsible for the murder was a white Maravilla gang member named Joe "Pegleg" Morgan. Morgan was well respected within the ranks of the Mexican Mafia and became a high ranking member. His connections with cocaine and heroin suppliers in Mexico helped pave the foundation for the Mexican Mafia's narcotics distribution throughout California.[8]During the 1970s, while under the control of Rudy Cadena, the Mexican Mafia often took control over various community groups. The gang was able to filter money from alcohol and drug prevention programs to finance their criminal activities.[8] In 1995, United States federal authorities indicted 22 members and associates of the Mexican Mafia, charged under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act with crimes which included extortion, murder and kidnapping.[12] One of the arrested members, Benjamin "Topo" Peters, was allegedly the Mexican Mafia's highest ranking member, and ...

Slight morning mist was still hanging in the air when we headed out for our first round of golf in the San Diego area. We headed about half an hour inland from Solana Beach to a golf course called Twin Oaks in the town of San Marcos. Surprisingly, I managed to not bury my ball in the water, but eeked out a semi-respectable score, considering it was my first round of golf this year. Early in the afternoon we started our discoveries and headed south towards San Diego. Our first stop was at Ocean Beach, a beachfront neighbourhood of San Diego just south of the San Diego River. One of the local landmarks is the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier, the longest concrete pier on the on the West Coast which stretches over 600 m (almost 2000 feet) into the ocean. We continued our coastal drive, and as we drove further south on Sunset Cliff Boulevard, the area got more affluent and the housing stock improved. We turned inland onto Catalina Boulevard to reach our main destination for the day: the Cabrillo National Monument. Located at the tip of the Point Loma peninsula, this 160 acre preserve marks the location of the landing of the first European explorers led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. A 14 foot (4 m) tall statue of Cabrillo was dedicated in 1913 and looks out over the sea from its elevated position. The view from the platform across the Bay of San Diego over the city is simply gorgeous. An extensive visitor centre sells books and information about San Diego, and also presents ...
Another day of discoveries was in store. I started my explorations across the street from the Transit Centre at the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. This area contains some original buildings and many replicas of San Diegos Mexican-era architecture and is the most visited state park in California. Five original adobe buildings are part of this historical complex, and other historic buildings illustrate life in early San Diego. The Plaza del Pasado and Old Town Plaza lead into a complex of adobe buildings that form a large interior courtyard. The buildings design, the decorations and the tropical vegetation indeed imbue this space with a very Mexican-inspired atmosphere. This complex features retail stores, galleries and restaurants, and many colourful Mexican-style items such as ponchos, pottery and souvenirs are for sale. Old Towns main street, San Diego Avenue, is lined by a variety of historic buildings and replicas that include a blacksmiths shop, a school house and San Diegos first newspaper office. The reconstructed Colorado House was once a hotel and now houses the Wells Fargo Museum, complete with original stage coach from 1860. Most of the buildings are originals or replicas from between 1820 and 1870 when San Diego started to first develop. Then I headed south to Heritage Park, a collection of seven Victorian era buildings that were purchased and moved here over a period of 25 years. The customs and heritage of ancient Sicily are still present in San Diego today. This photo show depicts the Madonna Del Lume Society religious procession through the streets of San Diego's Little Italy. The history of the Madonna Del Lume dates back to 1777 when a church was erected in the town of Porticello in the Madonna's honor. Now in its 71st year, this procession each October reenacts the age-old traditions in the heart of San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood. For more information, log on to www.sicilianfesta.com.

www.youtube.com is a video describing how to learn more about the Mormon Church. This is from the film "More Precious Than Gold." The Mormon Battalion was the only religious "unit" in American military history serving from July 1846 to July 1847 during the Mexican-American War. They provided funds from their salaries and allowances to assist the Mormon exodus west, such as part of their clothing allowances they provided to Brigham Young to help finance the Latter-day Saint's move to the Salt Lake Valley. The battalion was a volunteer unit of 500 soldiers, nearly all Mormon men with regular army officers in command and key staff positions along with Mormon company officers. The battalion made a grueling march from Council Bluffs, Iowa to San Diego, California. The Mormon Battalion were mostly members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who were fleeing religious persecution in Nauvoo, Illinois. The battalion's march and service was instrumental in helping secure new lands in several Western states, especially the Gadsden Purchase of 1853 of much of southern Arizona. The march also opened a southern wagon route to California. Veterans of the battalion played significant roles in America's westward expansion in California, Utah, Arizona and other parts of the West. President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Brigham Young, sent Elder Jesse C. Little to Washington, DC to seek assistance from the federal government for the Mormon trek west. After several ...

First known shark attack fatality in North County, San Diego. Believed to be a 12-17 foot Great White. Early press conference footage shortly after attack, from Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach with Deputy Fire Chief, Mayor, and Lifeguard Captain. Victim was Dr. David Martin, 66 year old swimmer, April, 25, 2008. Footage from photojournalist Ari Marsh with his additional commentary below: It was a beautiful morning in North County, almost pristine, with warm weather and small, glassy surf. I was in Encinitas, near Moonlight Beach, when Coast Guard helicopters began flying up and down the coast broadcasting a shocking announcement. "There has been a fatal shark attack in the area. Exit the ocean immediately!" I was stunned, having lived most of my life by the ocean in Southern California, and being a surfer for the last 25 years, I've never experienced something like this. As the eerie helicopter announcements continued, surfers and swimmers evacuated, leaving this pristine morning strangely vacant. Details surfaced soon after, near the site of the attack in Solana Beach. Apparently, the attack happened at approximately 7:00 am, Friday morning, April 25, 2008, near a surf break known as Tabletops, near Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. A group of strong swimmers in training for a triathlon were approximately 100-150 yards off the coast, when one of the men, 66 year old Dr. David Martin, a healthy, retired veterinarian, began screaming for help. His friends nearby him in the ...
