This song is about the feelings of a girl- personifying herself as a bird, calls herself as a fool, being in passionate love with a man who she feels is flirting with her. Each word in this subtle poem has very deep meanings. PANCHI (The Bird) is portrayal of a Girl (Madhubala) who is in deep love and has suspicions about her Love. CHAND (The Moon) is depiction of her Love (Dilip Kumar) who is handsome, rich and lives far-away from her village and leaves her in a state of dejection.. The song goes like this: Panchi bawara chand se preet lagaye........................... The foolish bird is in (deep) love with the moon (who is far away) Chhaya dekh nadi mein murakh, phoola nahi samaye.......... The stupid (bird) seeing the shadow of the moon in the river, (thinking the moon has come to meet her) is overjoyed. Woh harjayi taron ke sang apni raas rachaye.................... The Flirt (moon) is dancing around with the stars. Chand se preet lagaye....................(She) in (deep) love with the moon Kaun bataye tujhe chakora, gorey mann ke kaaley................. Who would tell you- the bird, the beautiful are black at heart. (The moon has black spots). Jyun jyun preet badaye ga tu, toon toon woh ghatt jaye....... The more you love him, the more his love will decrease (the moon recedes) Chand se preet lagaye.................... Super Hit movie Namak Haraam (1973) (with subtitles) starring Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Asrani, Raza Murad, AKHangal. Music : RDBurman, Director : Hrishikesh Mukherjee Synopsis: Told in flashback, this engrossing drama champions grass-roots socialism, disguised as a male-bonding tale of two friends -- one of whom finds work in a factory owned by the other. The storyline leads into misunderstandings between the two friends caused by their boss-employee relationship. Rare Khanna/Bachchan joint appearance added interest to the film. The confrontation between the friends coupled with a powerful performance from Bachchan is the highlight of this movie. This is the movie, in which Amitabh is said to have taken over the superstar mantle from Rajesh Khanna. This movie signalled the end of the Khanna era and the beginning of the long Bachchan era. The movie personified the angry young man image of Bachchan.
Song practiced with my students and dedicated to my kumu, Oliana Lutu-Topley (dedicated from her daughter, Ruta--to her). I will always think of them when I hear this song. History of this ancient chant: "Waika is taken from the ancient chant "Hole Waimea", a name song for Kamehameha I, inherited by his son, Liholiho. This is the tale of the Kipu`upu`u, a band of runners whose name was taken from Waimea`s pelting rain. Malanai is the gentle breeze. They were to be trained in spear fighting and went to Mahiki in Waimea, a woodland haunted by demons and spooks. There they would hole (strip), the bark of saplings to make spears. Hole also means to handle roughly or caress passionately. In the forest they sang of love, not of work or war. Pua o Koai`e is the fragrant blossom of the Koai`e tree that grows in the wild, and is an euphemism for the delicate parts of the body. Ko`olau is a contraction for the yellow flower or yellow eye (maka lena) of the ko`oko`olau plant, used to brew tea. Mo`olau and hulilau (slang) is used figuratively for a woman's breasts. Pololo is a combination of 2 words: po (night) and loloa (long), with the last "a" dropped. This form of speech is called kepakepa. Ulumano is a violent wind that blows in the night on the western side of Hawai`i. Kamehameha I's troops were wrecked by this wind off Nawawa. There, a whole village was burned to light the way to the shore. A`e is a violent wind that blows from different points in succession, or a circular ...

Navrang: A Riot of Colors Dinesh Raheja V Shantaram's colourful Navrang [1959], marked a hat-trick of successes, coming on the heels of the super successful musical Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje [1955], and the tale of prisoner reform Do Aankhen Barah Haath [1957]. Navrang begins with a direct communique by a director to his audience. In his brief but telling address, Shantaram lends credence to the rumours that he nearly lost his sight in an accident on the sets of his last venture, Do Aankhen Barah Haath. An eternal optimist, Shantaram reveals that during that temporary blindness, he saw some hitherto unseen colours of life. The riotously colourful Navrang is the creative realisation of that experience. The film's performances border on the theatrical and its sets are pastry pink. Yet Navrang is a must see thanks to its unusual thematic premise and C Ramchandra's unforgettable score set to Bharat Vyas' lyrics. Shantaram takes pains to communicate GD Madgulkar's difficult premise to the audience in a lucid manner. And succeeds. Married to a beautiful but domesticated woman, a poet creates a more glamorous image of her and starts relating to this fantasy. And Mohini [one who enamours] becomes the muse he seeks inspiration from. Unable to comprehend her husband's flights of fancy, the wife is perturbed by the mystery woman in her husband's life. Eventually, the film which has dichotomised the muse and the reality, fuses them at the end. The pre-Independence period enhances the ...

Lord Vishnu As one of the most important gods in the Hindu pantheon, Vishnu is surrounded by a number of extremely popular and well-known stories and is the focus of a number of sects devoted entirely to his worship.widely known incarnation is Krishna. In the Mahabharata (Great Battle of the Descendants of Bharata), the gigantic, multivolume epic of ancient North Indian kingdoms, Krishna appears as the ruler of one of the many states allied either with the heroic Pandava brothers or with their treacherous cousins, the Kauravas. Bharata was an ancient king whose achievements are celebrated in the Mahabharata and from whose name derives one of the names for modern India, that is Bharat. During the final battle, Krishna serves as charioteer for the hero Arjuna, and before the fighting starts he bolsters Arjuna's faltering will to fight against his kin. Krishna reveals himself as Vishnu, the supreme godhead, who has set up the entire conflict to cleanse the earth of evildoers according to his inscrutable will. This section of the epic, the Bhagavad Gita , or Song of the Lord, is one of the great jewels of world religious literature and of central importance in modern Hinduism. One of its main themes is karma-yoga , or selfless discipline in offering all of one's allotted tasks in life as a devotion to God and without attachment to consequences. The true reality is the soul that neither slays nor is slain and that can rejoin God through selfless dedication and through ...

91. Was He Really Dead? "Into what hidden mountain cave in what obscure and distant wilderness did our all-reverenced leader disappear? After such miracles, such ministry famed now among the disbelieving nations, where did the Great One go? And in what manner? What circumstance attended his eclipse? If it be true, as some say, he is dead, where can be found his monument or grave? It's rumoured he passed away at Ephesus. His Assyrian disciple, worthy Damis, in his gospel of the master ...

FOLK MUSIC ENSEMBLE FROM RAJASTHAN The Thar Desert region of Rajasthan has nurtured one of the most vibrant and evocative music cultures of the world. "Rupayan," on tour with eight performers from the Langa and Manganiar communities of hereditary professional musicians, were initially organized by the late ethnomusicologist and folklorist Komal Kothari of Jodhpur. They have performed in more than 200 venues in thirty countries. The Langas and Manganiars are Muslim musicians who have traditionally performed for both Hindu and Muslim patrons. Many of their songs are in praise of Hindu deities and celebrate Hindu festivals such as Diwali and Holi. They also sing the the poetry of South Asia's great Sufi poets. At one time, the Managaniars were musicians of the Rajput courts. The Langas (literally 'song givers') are poets, singers, and instrumentalists from the Barmer district of Rajasthan who seem to have converted from Hinduism to Islam in the seventeenth century. They are versatile players of the Sindhi Sarangi and the Algoza (double flute), which accompany and echo their formidable voices. The Sindhi Sarangi is made up of four main wires, with more than twenty vibrating sympathetic strings which help to create its distinctive haunting tones. Another remarkable bowed instrument is the kamayacha of the Manganiars with its big, circular resonator, giving out a deep, booming sound. The music of Rajasthan is driven by pulsating rhythms created by an array of percussion ...

Mohinuddin Dagar (1921-1967)+++ the photo of the senior Dagar Brothers was made in 1954. +++ Dhrupad (Hindi: ध्रुपद) is the oldest surviving style of music in the Hindustani musical tradition in India. Its name, from dhruva-pada, simply means "refrain", and today denotes both a form of poetry and a style of music in which the poetry is sung. Like all Indian classical music, dhrupad is modal, with a single melodic line and no harmonic parts. The modes are called raga, and each raga is a complicated framework of melodic rules. What sets dhrupad apart from other styles are long elaborate alapas without drum accompaniment, with a slow and deliberate melodic development, gradually developing an accelerating rhythmic pulse. Apart from obvious differences in the form of the musical presentation, one may notice a wealth of micro-tonal ornamentations that move between or around the tones that are typical for Dhrupad. The composition is sung to the rhythmic accompaniment of a pakhavaj and not tabla as in Khyal. There are said to be four broad stylistic variants of dhrupad -- the vanis (or banis): Gauri (Gohar), Khandar, Nauhar, and Dagar. These are tentatively linked to the five singing styles (geetis) known from the 7th Century: Shuddha, Bhinna, Gauri, Vegswara, and Sadharani -- but more importantly, there are a number of dhrupad gharanas: "houses", or family styles. How the gharanas relate to the vanis is a debated question. At any rate, the most well-known gharana is that ...
