You use Intel in your PC, but did you know Intel chips are inside loads of common devices? Our chips can teach you how to workout, help control home energy use and even grow tomatoes. The possible places you might find Intel are endless! To show some of the non-PC uses for the Atom and Core processors you know and love, we created a few fun new videos that show a snapshot of some of the amazing things Intel chips are doing today by helping everyday devices get smarter. As our goal was to educate and entertain, we follow a mock-investigative news reporter as he discovers this brave new and intelligent world. In this video, (mock) reporter Chad Bradley finds out how Intelligent home energy management systems let you track how every watt of electricity is used, empowering smarter decisions that can help save the planet— and money, too. Ed Miliband launches the Government's Household Energy Management Strategy. The strategy sets out plans to ensure that, by 2015, every household will have installed loft and cavity wall insulation where it is practical to do so, and by 2020 up to 7 million homes will have received more substantial eco-upgrades, including improvements such as solid wall insulation or renewable energy generating technologies. www.decc.gov.uk
Comprehensive Home Energy Audits by Tom Fitzpatrick - This session will discuss residential energy audits: a brief discussion of why improving efficiency in existing homes is so important, an introduction of standards for various levels of assessment, and a review of the range and procedures that a comprehensive audit should include, and what consumers should expect from a Home Energy Auditor. Tom's organization, Texas HERO, has published a Texas Home Energy Audit Technical Standard which will be used to outline the discussion. Tom Fitzpatrick is the Chief Operating Officer for the Texas Home Energy Rating Organization (Texas HERO). He is a registered Architect and long time advocate of energy efficiency and of system principles in design, construction and quality management programs. Texas HERO is implementing a residential energy audit program. www.txhero.org Please rate & comment! Thank you!

The X PRIZE Lab@MIT completed its third semester-long class in the Fall of 2009, this time devoted to developing new prize ideas in energy storage. Here's a presentation from one of the four teams of students. Another captivating proof-of-concept display that Intel showed off at CES 2010 was its Home Dashboard. Since energy preservation is on nearly everyones mind, the home energy management system quickly became a hotspot. The device allows users to see the price of energy just by glancing at it. As a result, consumers can determine if they should do their laundry or wait until a later time to do it. The Home Dashboard also allows users to see the real-time energy usage around the house such as electricity, gas, and water. In addition, if a house is networked with smart appliances and plugs, users can see how much each appliances is costing them each day. There is a real-time billing application as well with which consumers can access their bills. The system can predict the end-of-the-month costs based upon the households previous usage. This application can help consumers make any necessary adjustments. Although the energy management feature is the primary application on the Home Dashboard, Intel also included other applications and functions in order to make it an everyday device for consumers. Intel told WebProNews that it was working with its customers to release a product of this nature by the second half of 2010.

Consert, Inc., based in Raleigh, NC, provides a market-driven, incentive-based solution to utilities, residences and small businesses by which they can conserve energy, save money, eliminate the need for new construction of peak-consumption generator facilities and begin the transition to alternative, renewable energy sources. In addition to a patent-pending method to locate, measure, aggregate and verify carbon savings, a Consert smart grid can report and manage alternative energy sources which facilitates the installation of solar and wind generators as well as the adoption of plug-in hybrid vehicles. In association with the FREEDM initiative (a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program), Consert, Inc. will soon launch a pilot program at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. We have completed testing of the Internet gateway that will allow participating students to monitor and adjust their home energy consumption from a remote location and we will begin installing home energy controllers later this month, said Roy Moore, chief development officer of Consert, Inc. Using an interactive display terminal installed in their apartments or by logging onto a Web site students in 20 to 30 off-campus apartments will be able to enter their energy usage patterns (or select from a set of typical profiles). The system then works to reduce ghost consumption on high consumption devices such as air conditioners and water heaters that draw energy when not in use. Consert ...

To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog ashdenawards.blogspot.com SELCO-India is a private business which has designed and sold over 48000 solar home systems, powering electric lighting and small appliances for 220000 people in Karnataka and other states in South India. Around 46% of households in India do not have mains electricity, and for many others the supply is unreliable. The use of photovoltaic (PV) solar-home-systems (SHS) can provide reliable power for lighting and low-power appliances, which brings great practical benefits. Smoky, dangerous kerosene light is avoided, people have extended hours for work and study, and more opportunities for leisure and entertainment. Many programmes throughout the world have attempted to improve quality of life using SHS, but often they have not led to long term use and continuing markets. SELCO-India believes that the use of SHS will become widespread only if the system and after-sales service are of high quality, and if people want an SHS enough to pay for it. What they provide is properly designed and installed systems, excellent on-the-spot service and links to organisations which offer appropriate and affordable finance. The Ashden judges were highly impressed with the philosophy and excellent management within SELCO-India they have built a thriving business by providing poor ...
