How Far Is The Moon From The Earth has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
We look up at the Moon and we realize that it has hsitory - our history as well as its own silence. When we reflect the light of the Moon we discover more than its bright lightness.... It was over 40 years now since the first men circled the Moon. Apollo 8 was the first manned space voyage to achieve a velocity sufficient to allow escape from the gravitational field of planet Earth; the first to enter the gravitational field of another celestial body; the first to escape from the gravitational field of another celestial body; and the first manned voyage to return to planet Earth from another celestial body. The three-man crew of Mission Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders became the first humans to see the far side of the Moon with their own eyes, as well as the first humans to see planet Earth from orbit about another celestial body. After launching on December 21, 1968, the crew took three days to travel to the Moon. They orbited ten times over the course of 20 hours, during which the crew made a Christmas Eve television broadcast in which they read the first 10 verses from the Book of Genesis. The crew timed this reading to coincide with a full view of planet Earth hanging in the empty blackness of space while clearly showing the rich diversity of the living planet as indicated in Terran colors, seas, landforms, and weather patterns, rising over the dull gray horizon of the lifeless Moon. At the time, the broadcast was the most watched TV program ever. Apollo 8's successful mission paved the way for Apollo 11 to fulfill U.S. President John F. Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. Did an Englishman beat Galileo to the first moon observation? History credits the Italian philosopher as the first to turn a telescope towards the moon, but months earlier Thomas Harriot drew detailed maps of our heavenly neighbour, revealing mountains, craters and giant plainsComments (13) A drawing by astronomer Thomas Harriot, possibly the first recorded observation of the moon using a telescope, dated 26 July 1609. With permission, Lord Egremont Thomas Harriot, a wealthy but publicity-shy astronomer and mapmaker, produced a series of exquisite lunar drawings, one of which is dated 26 July 1609 (above), pre-dating Galileo's much-celebrated observations of the moon by six months. A composite drawing of the moon dating to 1612 or 1613 (below) is considered by some experts to mark the birth of modern cartography. The lunar drawings by Harriot will form part of an exhibition at West Sussex Record Office in Chichester in July to mark the International Year of Astronomy. 17th century astronomer Thomas Harriot "Crucially one of his maps is dated, which proves Harriot pre-dated Galileo, who has always been thought to have done the first observation of the moon through a telescope," said Alison McCann, an archivist at the West Sussex Record Office. "Galileo was very good at self-publicity but Harriot wasn't interested. He didn't publicise his work and this is why few have heard of him." Galileo was hard up and in search of fame and fortune, but Harriot, who had money but also two friends in the Tower of London for political crimes, had no wish to draw attention to himself. Composite lunar drawing by astronomer Thomas Harriot, 1612 or 1613. With permission, Lord Egremont The maps belong to Lord Egremont of Petworth House in West Sussex and are looked after by the West Sussex Record Office. Lord Egremont is a descendant of the Earl of Northumberland, who was Harriot's first employer. A further exhibition of the drawings will take place at the Science Museum in London from July.
Wednesday, November 26, 2008 UFOS OVER EARTH: Bucks County Flap (2008) Discovery Channel - Original Air Date: 11/24/08 There's a new player in the UFO hunt, though it remains to be seen whether this show will be a perennial player, or if it's just a flash in the pan (I.E. a pilot that doesn't pan out -- Disc. seems to be showing a lot of "one shots" in their Monday night time slot right now). This episode looks at a spate of recent (spring and summer 2008) sightings in Pensylvania. After interviewing a number of witnesses, the investigators -- all members of MUFON (the Mutual UFO Network) -- narrow their focus to two witnesses. One is a retiree, who seems very credible and has no obvious reason to make up his two sightings, and the other is a woman who claims both multiple sightings and to have pictures of the alleged UFO. Unfortunately, the first witness has no actual proof, just a compelling story. So the MUFON folks recreate his sighting using their CGI equipment, and filddle with the simulation until the witness approves the octagonal-shaped craft and the sighting conditions. The woman witness proves both more interesting and problematic. Her picture evidence is unimpressive (the usual blurred lights), and one image even seems to match up to the position of the moon and Jupiter on the night in question. Additionally, she claims to have seen some kind of glittering dust falling from the UFO into one of the trees in her yard, only to have the dust then return to the UFO. Despite claiming that this phenomnon lasted 20 minutes, she has no photos. The group takes cuttings from the tree and sends them to a scientist, who claims that the tree was subjected to radiation which caused mutation in the leaves. Fortunately (for science), the group then sends the sample to another expert, who says the first expert is totally wrong; there is no evidence of either radiation or mutation. I was impressed by this, as most shows of this kind consistently fail to get a second opinion -- prefering to go with the most sensational finding (and dubious expert) possible. The group also re-creates the woman's sighting, and she is very moved by the compupter-generated recreation. This makes the group believe that she is sincere, though they retain some skepticism about her report. This would be my only reservation about this episode -- that they give a witness more leeway than perhaps they should. (To me, at least, the dust part of her sighting seems more like a waking dream.) Fortunately, the MUFON folks make up for this lapse of "toughness" in the Mexico show. (See following review.) This show is to MUFON what UFO Hunters is to UFO Magazine -- that is, the program seems to be built around the people in the group and their interests. And I have to say, from what I've seen so far, I find this show much more interesting. Where UFO Hunters (the History Channel one, not the SciFi series which had one show and then disappeared -- seemingly for good) is built around UFO mythology and "investigating" sightings -- nearly all of which seem to be more than 20 years old. This show is tackling sightings that are current (2008 as this is written). I find the immediacy much more compelling. The witnesses have had less time to become "set" in their stories, or to forget or embelish details. (Though, as regular readers know, I don't put a lot of stock in witness reports; see the review of Unsolved History: Roswell - a.k.a. UFOs Over America for a scientific study of witness' memory.) Also, the MUFON crew seems much more interested in finding out what's really happening than in building the UFO mythology. In the Mexico show (see review), they even state this goal specifically. So far, I'm favorably impressed. The "crew" may not be as flashy and memorable as UFO Hunters or Ghost Hunters, but they're serious about their work and asking the hard questions that UFO Hunters -- for one -- seldom wants to ask.

The SELenological and ENgineering Explorer 'KAGUYA' (SELENE), Japans first large lunar explorer, was launched by the H-IIA rocket on September 14, 2007. The mission, which is the largest lunar mission since the Apollo program, is being keenly anticipated by many countries. The major objectives of the mission are to understand the Moons origin and evolution, and to observe the moon in various ways in order to utilize it in the future. The lunar missions that have been conducted so far have gathered a large amount of information on the Moon, but the mysteries of its origin and evolution have been left unsolved.

The Eden Prime commander is in flight through our galaxy to find planet Earth, where we have a small colony going. We journey into our solar system, Sol, and see our planets(Excluding Pluto). After traveling many many light years, we reach Earth. Our colonies are being attacked by the Mighty Grox Empire, the strongest Empire ever known. Their alliance lies completely around the Galactic Core. We reach Earth, and engage the Grox in combat. Though our lasers triumph, our colonies are damaged. But we continue to explore. Traveling around the United States, Russia, Europe, Africa, Antarctica, and Australia. We send our hologram down to Earth, to look at the animals and the environment. Not moving too far, we depart. Later we venture onto planet Mars, where we too have a colony. We travel to our moon, in it's orbit around earth. No colony is placed on the Moon. Comment & Rate. Enjoy!

The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 km, about thirty times the diameter of the Earth. The Moon's diameter is 3,474 km, a little more than a quarter that of the Earth. This means that the Moon's volume is about 2 percent that of Earth and the pull of gravity at its surface about 17 percent that of the Earth. The Moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth every 27.3 days (the orbital period), and the periodic variations in the geometry of the EarthMoonSun system are responsible for the lunar phases that repeat every 29.5 days (the synodic period). The Moon is the only celestial body to which humans have travelled and upon which humans have landed. The first artificial object to escape Earth's gravity and pass near the Moon was the Soviet Union's Luna 1, the first artificial object to impact the lunar surface was Luna 2, and the first photographs of the normally occluded far side of the Moon were made by Luna 3, all in 1959. The first spacecraft to perform a successful lunar soft landing was Luna 9, and the first unmanned vehicle to orbit the Moon was Luna 10, both in 1966. The United States (U.S.) Apollo program achieved the only manned missions to date, resulting in six landings between 1969 and 1972. Human exploration of the Moon ceased with the conclusion of the Apollo program, although several countries have either sent or announced plans to send people and/or robotic spacecraft to the Moon.

Courtesy ISRO: "THE MOON" with the history of the early solar system etched on it beckons mankind from time immemorial to admire its marvels and discover its secrets. Understanding the moon provides a pathway to unravel the early evolution of the solar system and that of the planet earth. Through the ages, the Moon, our closest celestial body has aroused curiosity in our mind much more than any other objects in the sky. Scientific Objectives: - The Chandrayaan-1 mission is aimed at high-resolution remote sensing of the moon in visible, near infrared(NIR), low energy X-rays and high-energy X-ray regions. Specifically the objectives will be - To prepare a three-dimensional atlas (with a high spatial and altitude resolution of 5-10m) of both near and far side of the moon. - To conduct chemical and mineralogical mapping of the entire lunar surface for distribution of elements such as Magnesium, Aluminum, Silicon, Calcium, Iron and Titanium with a spatial resolution of about 25 km and high atomic number elements such as Radon, Uranium & Thorium with a spatial resolution of about 20 km. - Simultaneous photo geological and chemical mapping will enable of different geological units, which will test the early evolutionary history of the moon and help in determining the nature and stratigraphy of the lunar crust. Mission Objectives: - To realise the mission goal of harnessing the science payloads, lunar craft and the launch vehicle with suitable ground support systems including DSN station. - To realise the integration and testing, launching and achieving lunar polar orbit of about 100 km, in-orbit operation of experiments, communication/ telecommand, telemetry data reception, quick look data and archival for scientific utilization by group of scientists. GROUND SEGMENT FOR CHANDRAYAAN-1 MISSION, comprises of three major elements: The Ground Station Network including the Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN), Mission Operations Complex (MOX)and Indian Space Science Data Centre (ISSDC). This trio of ground facility ensures the success of the mission by providing to and fro conduit of communication, securing good health of the spacecraft, maintaining the orbit and attitude to the requirements of the mission and conducting payload operations. The ground segment is also responsible for making the science data available for the Payload Scientists along with auxiliary information, in addition to archiving of payload and spacecraft data. Payload Operation Centres (POCs) also form a part of the Ground Segment.
My son Chris was taking a video of the Moon using his Philips webcam attached to his 4.5" DS-2114 telescope when this object passed by. It is most likely a satellite due to the trajectory and speed, but you be the judge. Note: It cannot be an insect or anything passed in front of the telescope, as the focal point is so far out that nothing like that would even be seen with the scope.

My first video; please rate and comment. :D Also, Please read before considering your "Constructive Criticism" You see, I am not very good at making videos, however, this video was merely a desperate attempt to actually have a video of the full song that is very meaningful to me. lol.. Also, I am sorry about the repetition of images you will see in this video... Again, at my first attempt to make a video... please don't expect high quality... ^_^;; Emilie Simon - Space Oddity Ground Control to Major Tom Ground Control to Major Tom Take your protein pills and put your helmet on Ground Control to Major Tom Commencing countdown, engines on Check ignition and may God's love be with you This is Ground Control to Major Tom You've really made the grade And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare This is Major Tom to Ground Control I'm stepping through the door And I'm floating in a most peculiar way And the stars look very different today For here Am I sitting in a tin can Far above the world Planet Earth is blue And there's nothing I can do Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles I'm feeling very still And I think my spaceship knows which way to go Tell my wife I love her very much she knows Ground Control to Major Tom Your circuit's dead, is there something wrong? Apollo 10's amazing encounter with a VERY bizarre anomaly while behind the far side of the Moon. This segment will give you an up-close look at an astounding audio transcript from the Apollo 10 mission that has never before been publicly analyzed - and that NASA and the Apollo 10 astronauts to this day still refuse to talk about. You will follow Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young as they become only the second crew in history to journey behind the lunar far side. During this period of "LOS" (Loss Of Signal), the astronauts encounter something truly incredible - they discover MUSIC behind the Moon! *THE DSE and DSEA* Throughout the Apollo program, the CSM and LM spacecraft carried what were known as DSE and DSEA "black box" flight data recorders. These instruments recorded the internal LM and CSM crew conversations while the astronauts were around the lunar far side and out of radio contact with Earth. Although NASA has never made the actual DSE/DSEA audio recordings public, transcripts of these far side conversations are available in the NASA archives, and as you will see, they offer up some truly AMAZING surprises! Here is a link to the Apollo 10 DSEA voice transcript (in PDF format) for those who are interested. http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/mission_trans/AS10_LM.PDF Stay tuned for Jose Escamilla's new motion picture documentary "MOON RISING", where we will go into much further depth about what is, without exaggeration, the most monumental coverup in human history. http://MoonRising-TheMovie.com. Cancion de The Doors "Not To Touch The Earth" del album "Waiting for the Sun". Not to touch the earth Not to see the sun Nothing left to do, but Run, run, run Let's run Let's run House upon the hill Moon is lying still Shadows of the trees Witnessing the wild breeze C'mon baby run with me Let's run Run with me Run with me Run with me Let's run The mansion is warm, at the top of the hill Rich are the rooms and the comforts there Red are the arms of luxuriant chairs And you won't know a thing till you get inside Dead president's corpse in the driver's car The engine runs on glue and tar Come on along, not goin' very far To the east to meet the czar Run with me Run with me Run with me Let's run Whoa! Some outlaws lived by the side of a lake The minister's daughter's in love with the snake Who lives in a well by the side of the road Wake up, girl, we're almost home Ya, c'mon! We should see the gates by mornin' We should be inside the evenin' Sun, sun, sun Burn, burn, burn Soon, soon, soon Moon, moon, moon I will get you Soon!, soon!, soon! UPDATE: If you keep getting the error while trying to watch this video, follow this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JKUqzlsVVU&fmt=18 Apparently youtube is having issues with some videos, they are probably fixing it soon. A quickly made music video for this amazing song. I tried to make the (quite random) clips of a car drive fit the lyrics - with added pictures and colour. LYRICS: "Her window looked out on North Church Street An attic space overgrown A photobook of smiling friends Road maps, New York, Los Angeles Her walls are Mediterranean blue Her baby sister picked the hue Saltwater taffy, Jersey shore Blue like the fingernails she wore The house is not far from the school Her mom taught on the Hudson Her dad's guitar sings open-tuned Reverberates up through the floor Our love grew more one summer there We'd spend our days just driving round Old parking lots and neighborhoods Are framed and charmed in Moorestown I followed her across the Earth Through parks in London, coasts of Perth Newport, Kentucky and New Orleans We shared a million lives it seems I slept with her so many nights We moved together heavenly So close the North Pacific slept You too were once beside me She moved away to Williamsburg Her eyes, sad as a raven My thoughts will pause, my throat will swell When her name is spoken And looking past the cold, long sea I cannot bear to wonder now If the cascading soft lights Are glowing for us in Moorestown Are glowing for us in Moorestown" NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED. Song and lyrics belong fully to the owner/artist. This is made for entertainment purposes only. I don't own or claim to own anything other than the video clips.

Called the Far Side, it is the face never seen when we look up at the moon - no matter where you are on Earth! Synchronous rotation is the reason why we are unable to see its other side. *2nd rendition

EARTH RISING Instrumental Guitar Composition by Robert Len Stallard -- Guitarist-Composer -------------------------------------------------------------- I recorded this video on 22-Jul-07 during another night of insomnia. In this video, I perform my original instrumental guitar composition "Earth Rising". ABOUT THE TECHNIQUES -------------------------------------------------------------- The guitar tuning for this song is DADF#AD and I apply advanced fingerstyle techniques such as two-hand tapping, various harmonics, among others. The only effects I use for the audio are EQ and a touch of reverb recorded in stereo. ABOUT THE COMPOSITION -------------------------------------------------------------- I composed this tune mid 2004, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the landing of men from Earth on the moon. My inspiration came from photos which the Apollo astronauts took of the earth rising over the moon horizon when orbiting the moon. Below I include some of the Astronaut's impressions on viewing the Earth from the Moon. My thought's on this are that the awe-inspiring creation of God that is Earth is manifested by its hypnotizing view from space. If we were to be visited by beings from another planet (or dimension), as they approach Earth, they would become captivated by its full-color splendor. Since from space you cannot see any boundaries drawn between countries on Earth, they would presume a peaceful, conservationist people must inhabit such a wondrous planet. We know how far from the truth this is because of our national, political, religious, cultural and differences, as well as our apathy towards the environment. If all the leaders of the world were to travel together in a spacecraft to the Moon and see the Earth from there, perhaps they may change their perspective about our coexistence on our planet and figure out ways for us all to live and prosper together in peace and harmony while protection the environment. ...Or not, in which case we can leave them up there on the Moon. As you listen to this song, please imagine yourself sitting in lounge chair at the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon and instead of watching a sunrise, you are seeing the Earth rise. ASTRONAUT'S IMPRESSIONS ON VIEWING THE EARTH FROM THE MOON -------------------------------------------------------------- "The view of the earth from the moon fascinated me - a small disk, 240,000 miles away. It was hard to think that little thing held so many frustrations. Raging nationalistic interests, famines, wars, pestilence don't show from that distance....If some stranger came from another part of the heavens, he would certainly know instinctively ...that the destinies of all who lived on it must inevitably be interwoven and joined. We are one hunk of ground, water, air, clouds, floating around in space. From out there it really is one world." ----- Frank Borman, commander of Apollo 8, the first lunar mission "The soft, glowing presence of planet Earth in the black abyss had a pristine clarity uncaptured by photographs. Images on film lack the subtle shades, the brightness, and the depth of the living sphere, which bulged out of the blackness as I sailed outward on Apollo 11... From the deep blue of the Mediterranean, all of Europe and Africa sprawled away in soft pastels, innocent of political boundaries. And from the surface of the moon, where I could cover with my thumb the site of all human history, the Earth seemed fragile as a Christmas ornament, drifting like a lost balloon on the black velvet of space. The image of a living Earth, capable of extinction, disarms illusions of individual or tribal isolation. We gained more than altitude in those 66 years from Kitty Hawk to the moon. Seeing Earth not as an extension of man, but man as an extension of Earth." ----- Buzz Aldrin, lunar-module pilot of Apollo 11 "It was something so awe-inspiring you had to sneak a glance at it every chance you got." ...[Seeing the Earth from that vantage point convinced him it must have been created by a higher power.]... "It's too beautiful to have happened by accident. To me, it was like sitting on God's back porch, looking back home." ----- Gene Cernan, Commander Apollo 10 -------------------------------------------------------------- Please rate, comment, and share. This is the moment in time when we became self aware of our Earth as heavenly body. The photograph of this animation was taken during the Apollo 8 mission in December 1968, seven months before the first lunar landing. Apollo 8 was the mission which put humans into lunar orbit for the very first time. Until then, no human eyes had seen the far side of the Moon - (all previous images of the far side of the moon had come from robot spacecraft). Virtually all of the photographs scheduled for the Apollo 8 mission were to do with capturing high resolution images of the lunar surface - both of the far side and of potential landing sites on the near side. The 'Earthrise' photograph was not on the mission schedule and was taken in a moment of pure serendipity. US Nature photographer Galen Rowell has described this image as "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken". It is an image which still speaks to us today. Glenn Steckling has assumed the responsibilities of his family's work in the field of UFO and ET research since his father, Mr. Fred Steckling, passed away in 1991. This knowledge represents years of personal experiences and collective data. Now armed with first hand sightings, he continues to present the materials discovered and bequeathed his family spanning over 60 years. Mr. Steckling's latest revision to his Father's book, "Alien Bases on the Moon", now "Alien Bases on the Moon II", contains a combination of over 100 NASA photographs challenging the continued myth behind the 'Dead Moon' and inhospitable planet theories, and exposes the increasing possibility of extraterrestrial activity there. Mr. Steckling discussed evidence for alien bases on the moon. He noted that numerous anomalies such as luminescent areas and glowing objects have been observed coming from the moon in reports dating as far back as the 1800's. "Clearly some type of activity," is taking place on the moon, he declared. Astronauts like Gordon Cooper and the French scientist Maurice Chatelain have made comments that NASA moon missions were followed by ET craft, said Steckling, who shared his belief that the aliens are basically non-hostile and beneficial. Further he suggested that ETs live among us, but appear human, so that we would not recognize them as being different. In a discussion of selected NASA photos (see below), Steckling pointed out such details as atmospheric disturbances and clouds on the lunar surface, as well as unexplained light sources and mining-like activities. "Intelligent beings from other planets regularly visit our world in an effort to enter into contact with us. I have encountered various ships during my space voyages. NASA and the American government know this and posses a great deal of evidence. Nevertheless, they remain silent in order to not alarm the people." Astronaut Gordon Cooper - Los Angeles Herald Examiner - Aug 15, 1976. "It is my thesis that flying saucers are real and they are space ships from another solar system. I think that they possibly are manned by intelligent observers who are members of a race that may have been investigating our earth for centuries." Professor Herman Oberth - a father of rocketry and the space age - article Flying Saucers Come from a Distant World - The American Weekly, 1954. http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_luna.htm#inicio http://www.gafintl-adamski.com/ http://www.coasttocoastam.com
