In a jam-packed ceremony in the East Room that was part pep rally, the president pointed out that the last time the Yankees -- winners of 27 titles -- were toasted at the White House was 2001. "It's been nine years since your last title -- which must have felt like eternity for Yankee fans. I think other teams would be just fine with a spell like that. The Cubs, for example," Obama said, drawing laughs from players, coaches, members of his Cabinet and Congress and other guests. He added that his White Sox have gotten close, including a title in 2005. The Yankees won the World Series in six games last year, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies. New York Manager Joe Girardi presented Obama with a signed Yankees' jersey with the No. 27. The White House visit was the fifth for the Yankees core four -- Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada -- who have a handful of championship rings. They've met three presidents -- Bill Clinton in the 1990s, George W. Bush in 2001 and now Obama. Obama praised the players for their off-field work, from a scholarship that ...

After a brand new stadium, off season surgeries, steroid allegations, three huge acquisitions, walk off win after walk off win, new clubhouse energy, Mariano Rivera's 500th career save, Derek Jeter passing Lou Gehrig for most Yankee hits of all time, Melky Cabrera hitting for the cycle, and so much more, the Yankees were back in the world series to take on the Philadelphia Phillies, behind shutdown pitcher Cliff Lee, and offensive Juggernaut Chase Utley. Wednesday night was a victory in pure Yankee style, with Andy Pettitte picking up the win, and Mariano Rivera recording the final out. Hideki Matsui won the series MVP for his incredible game 6 hitting. And for the 27th time, the New York Yankees are WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!! TNYS New York Yankees: Can you say "World Champions"? Can you say "27"? Yankees won it all! Oh yeah! Hideki Matsui: The Japanese slugger carried the Yankees tonight as he had 6 RBI's (tied a WS record). The long time Yankee earned his first ring (and his first WS MVP award too). Japan is shaking right now. I feel it here. Japan from the West, New York from the East. I feel World Series vibrations! I'm in Cali. Matsui is in New York. Congrats to the Godzilla! Paint the town in pinstripes! Nearly a decade after their dynasty ended on a blooper in the desert, the New York Yankees are baseball's best again. Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs, Andy Pettitte won on short rest and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 on Wednesday night, finally seizing that elusive 27th title. It was the team's first since winning three straight from 1998-2000. Matsui powered a quick rout of old foe Pedro Martinez -- and when Mariano Rivera got the final out it was ecstasy in the Bronx for George Steinbrenner's go-for-broke bunch. What a way for Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and crew to christen their $1.5 billion ballpark: One season, one championship. And to think it capped a season that started in turmoil -- a steroids scandal involving A-Rod, followed by hip surgery that kept him out until May. About 100 miles south, disappointment. For Chase Utley and the Phillies, it was a frustrating end to another scintillating season. Philadelphia fell two wins short of becoming the first NL team to repeat as World Series champions since the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds. Ryan Howard's sixth-inning homer came too late to wipe away his World Series slump, and Phillies pitchers rarely managed to slow Matsui and the Yankees' machine. In a fitting coincidence, this championship came eight years to the day after the Yankees lost Game 7 of the 2001 World Series in Arizona on Luis Gonzalez's broken-bat single off Rivera. New York spent ...

The New York Yankees are America's World Series again this year. It is one of two professional baseball teams in the country's largest city. The players who wear the Yankee's famous "pinstripes" are part of a winning tradition that dates back more than 100 years. The team leads Major League Baseball in revenue and in championships. They have won 40 American League pennants and beaten the National League in the World Series 26 times, in a sport that is often called "The National Pastime." But critics say the sport and its professional players are driven more and more by money. Correspondent Paige Kollock takes a look at the Yankees, the fans and the trappings of baseball
