Saro-Wiwa is a beautiful song appropriate for International Human Rights Day (December 10) written and recorded by Jim Sands, a Vancouver musician and human rights activist. I met Jim as he was playing this song in 1998 at a Boycott $hell rally. The genesis is the tragic "judicial murder" by hanging in 1995 of Kenule "Ken" Beeson Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni minority rights activists.* The Ogoni, an ethnic minority indigenous to the Niger River delta of Nigeria, have been ravaged by industry since the discovery of oil on their land. Saro Wiwa, one of the leaders of non-violent protests, brought world attention to the collusion of the main culprit Shell Oil and a government run by military dictatorship. The Ogoni Nine sham trials and hanging provoked international outrage. Coinciding with International Human Rights Day this week hundreds of activists from around the nation will gather for the bi-annual conference of the US Human Rights Network from December 9-11. The conference traditionally happens in Atlanta, Georgia, but this year, in protest of Georgia's draconian new immigration law, and consistent with a subsequent economic boycott of Georgia, it was moved to Los Angeles. The conference is being held at the Radisson Hotel near LAX, a hotel with a unionized work force. The US Human Rights Network is a coalition comprising over 300 community organizations that formed out of a 2002 conference at Howard University Law School. It's goal is to strengthen the work of human rights activists in the United States. The network recognizes that economic rights are intimately tied to human rights, and recently released a statement in support of the Occupy Los Angeles movement and Occupy movements nationwide. This year's conference features important activists like Sister Song's Loretta Ross, Haiti Action Committee, Pierre LaBossierre, and former Green Party Vice Presidential candidate Rosa Clemente. Uprising host Sonali Kolhatkar spoke with US Human Rights Network Co-Director, Kali Akuno on December 7th 2011. Find out more about the conference at www.ushrnetwork.org. Martina Steiner recorded this interview.

To mark Human Rights Day (10 December 2011), the Refugee Council has made a short film to celebrate the protection of refugees in the UK over the last 60 years. The film, "Protecting refugees: 60 years and beyond", features the testimonies and thoughts of refugees who fled conflicts around the world and rebuilt their lives in the UK, in each decade since 1951 - the year the charity came together to offer support and advice to refugees. 2011 is also the 60th anniversary of the UN Convention for Refugees, created after WWII to guarantee refugees' rights. With the voice of Zoe Wanamaker. To show your support for protecting refugees on the 60th anniversary of the UN Convention for Refugees, please visit www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/protect

Occupy Melbourne Day 52 - Tent Monster Sarah has her clothing/political statement ripped off her in full public view at 8:30am this morning. This is a clear violation of The Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities, from the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission... may I quote; "Freedom of thought, conscience, religion and belief (section 14) People have the freedom to think and believe what they want, for example, religion. They can do this in public or private, as part of a group or alone." Would you not say political belief could be an example? Definitely. Absolutely. Yet wearing a reconditioned tent is clearly seen my Melbourne City Council and Victoria Police acting on their behalf, as an invalid form of political expression. For those of those that slept under the stars, the Melbourne City Council were present all night and repeatedly woke us up, shining torches in our faces as we slept. This is beyond farcical. They have had their chance to address our basic human rights to protest, but they continuously abuse our ability to do so. We need basic amenities. We also need sleep! We will not stop. We will never give up. We have a world to win. Tune into the movement.... Not only Health is a fundamental Human Right, it is also linked to every others, being the right to clean water, the right to a safe shelter, the protection of the state, the right to good working conditions, the freedom of expression, etc. WHO described health not only as the absence of disease, but as a state of "complete physical, mental and social well-being". Medical students, through the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace, want to celebrate this 63rd Human Rights Day by pointing out the closes ties between Health and Human rights, and why we should care as students, as future doctors, and as citizens of the world. Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan gives this lecture entitled 'Public Lecture Electoral reforms and the quest for democracy in Malaysia' at The Australian National University on 1 November 2011. The BERSIH 2.0 rally of the 9th of July 2011 will forever be etched in the memory of Malaysians as a historic day. This was the day when around 50000 Malaysians from all ethnic groups defied attempts by the government to prevent a demonstration. In this video, the speaker discusses the eight demands of BERSIH in the context of Malaysia's electoral system. She also explores the events leading up to July 9th as well its aftermath and significance. She also discusses whether the government's recent response in setting up a Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reforms and announced plans to repeal some oppressive legislation are reasons for hope. Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan is a leading lawyer, human rights and rule of law activist in Malaysia. She served on the Malaysian Bar Council from 2002 until March 2010. She was its Chairman and President from March 2007 till March 2009. She presently heads Bersih 2.0, a citizen's movement for free and fair elections. All we have been shown by so-called official media about the events in Libya is a lie. Here is the Truth: The war in Libya is carried out by NATO forces, with the support of a corrupt bureaucracy of the UN, according to the CIA plans. This is a real destruction of the socialist country. The war is far from being won, as the various politicians and media - members of an international gang, backed up by the global banking oligarchy, rush to assure us. The war is going on. Today, right now the heroic people of Libya resist with all their might. Army of Libya has been restored under the leadership of Qaddafi and his sons and now is in active hostilities. At the same time, the bandits are eliminating all the black population, killing without trial. There is real genocide of indigenous people in the heart of Africa - under the guise of NATO and with the acquiescence of most international organizations for human rights - Amnesty International, Human Rights Court at the United Nations (ECHR), etc. At this point, the bandits surrounded the cities of Beni Walid, Sirte. These cities are under siege, they have neither electricity, nor water, medicines, food. Every day, 24 hours a day, NATO planes bomb the cities from a safe distance using sometimes prohibited weapons: phosphorous bombs, depleted uranium bombs, mustard gas, sound, cluster bombs. There is a possibility that atomic bombs can be used! In the cities there are many dead and wounded people, this is real genocide happening ...
