March 5, 2010, Dogs Deserve Better's Tamira Thayne investigated a report of dogs chained and abused on abandoned property off Gypsy Camp Hollow Road in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Central Pennsylvania Humane Society's Paul Gottshall claimed he knew about these dogs but couldn't go onto the property because they hadn't been reported to him. So it's ok to abuse your animals as long as no one can see you? Tamira reported the abuse to him, and he said he'd take care of the situation. Instead, he met officer Wagner of the Pennsylvania State Police at the site, and they conspired to charge Tamira Thayne with trespassing. The people who left these dogs in these conditions, one with her uterus hanging out, and one with a huge tumor on his face, not to mention the copious amount of diarrhea that indicated heavy worm infestations, received NO CHARGES OF ANIMAL CRUELTY, despite the obvious need for immediate veterinary care as provided in existing Pennsylvania Cruelty law. Is it better to charge those who abuse animals or those who shine a spotlight on the abuse? I think we know Pennsylvania's answer to that. The abusers gave up three of the dogs to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society. Two remain chained at the property, the black dog and the blind St. Bernard mix. The CPHS will not allow Dogs Deserve Better to pull the three dogs, even though we pull dogs from shelters all over the country, get them housetrained, vetted, and ready for new homes. As the ringing in of a new decade draws near, the animals at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington all hope that a new, forever home is waiting for them in the New Year. For one shelter resident though, the New Year brings with it not only the prospect of a new home and a new family, but a new life. Weighing in at over 135 pounds, a dog named Chopper patiently waits in an oversized kennel for the chance to live out his life with less pain and more freedom. Chopper was surrendered at the Humane Society on August 26th by a struggling owner who was not able to give the three-year-old purebred Rottweiler the veterinary care he needed. Despite having obvious pain in his rear legs, Chopper met everyone in the shelter with a wiggly bottom and big sloppy kisses and it was instantly clear that this exuberant giant had the will to survive. Much more interested in giving custom face washes then starting any trouble, Chopper quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. Under the recommendation of the shelter veterinarian, Chopper immediately underwent pain management treatment while shelter staff worked diligently to find him a suitable placement with a local rescue organization. While everyone fell in love with Chopper, no rescue organization was able to front the money that it would cost to treat his condition. Chopper was put up for adoption on November 19th, with hope that someone who was financially able to care for him would be interested in adopting. Potential adopters ...

The Animal Humane Society employs the only two humane agents in the state of Minnesota. They receive thousands of calls each year, the majority of which involve lack of food, water and shelter. However, larger, more complex cases are conducted resulting in on-site investigations, animal seizure and prosecuting offenders. While were conducting our own investigations, were often contacted by law enforcement agencies to assist in their investigations and with animal rescue, transportation, shelter and medical treatment. This is just one of the stories...

Despite the words humane society on its letterhead, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not affiliated with your local animal shelter. Despite the omnipresent dogs and cats in its fundraising materials, its not an organization that runs spay/neuter programs or takes in stray, neglected, and abused pets. And despite the common image of animal protection agencies as cash-strapped organizations dedicated to animal welfare, HSUS has become the wealthiest animal rights organization on earth. HSUS is big, rich, and powerful, a humane society in name only. And while most local animal shelters are under-funded and unsung, HSUS has accumulated $113 million in assets and built a recognizable brand by capitalizing on the confusion its very name provokes. This misdirection results in an irony of which most animal lovers are unaware: HSUS raises enough money to finance animal shelters in every single state, with money to spare, yet it doesnt operate a single one anywhere. Instead, HSUS spends millions on programs that seek to economically cripple meat and dairy producers; eliminate the use of animals in biomedical research labs; phase out pet breeding, zoos, and circus animal acts; and demonize hunters as crazed lunatics. HSUS spends $2 million each year on travel expenses alone, just keeping its multi-national agenda going. Raising money is Job One. HSUS will even adopt conflicting positions in order to satisfy individual patrons. Two HSUS donors once wrote to John Hoyt ...

Nearly 100 dogs rescued from the Ozarks last week are recovering in a Humane Society of Missouri facility in St. Louis. www.kspr.com Last Friday, Greene County authorities seized 93 dogs from what they call a deplorable puppy mill. The owners have signed the animals over to the Humane Society of Missouri. The rescued Yorkshire Terriers were shaved and bathed after they were saved from cages on a Pleasant Hope property. "In some cases performing the exam was difficult because there was so much matting they were like little mummies," says Steven Schwartz, Humane Society of Missouri Director of Veterinary Services. Schwartz says the severe matting caused bones to form abnormally. "Many of their kneecaps are dislocated," Schwartz says. Underneath the matted feces Schwartz says he found more problems. He says the vast majority had skin infections and open wounds. It took a lot of work to groom the 93 dogs. After shaving half of them veterinarians removed more than 50 pounds of matted feces and fur. Schwartz says malnourishment caused severe dental disease. "It's affecting their ability to chew food," Schwartz says. Many dogs will get multiple surgeries but recovery doesn't stop there. Humane Society members say each dog also needs socialization. "All they can do is bark and spin in their cages because they want attention. Humane Society of Missouri Director of Adoption Center Cyndi Nason says, They've never had that. Nason says many dogs dont even know what grass is. Even ...
Housed in filthy, overcrowded, wire-bottom cages, their coats so over-grown and matted they couldnt see or walk, more than 90 Yorkshire terriers lived their entire lives with little social interaction and no veterinary care. They needed help. Friday the 13th turned out to be their lucky day! The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Taskforce drove more than 500 miles and spent more than 19 hours rescuing these pitiful dogs from a substandard puppy mill in Greene County. Friday, Feb. 13, 2009-When they arrived in St. Louis, our triage team of veterinarians, animals care staff and groomers went to work. We found dental disease, skin and bone infections, malnutrition and heartworms. Nearly 50 lbs. of disgusting, noxious, matted hair was shaved from these dogs. Each was given a clean, warm, comfy place to sleep with plenty of food and water perhaps for the first time in their lives.
