Another quick practice clip from 01-06-10. Not a full practice video, but just me still trying out the new skates, and working on spins and the easier double jumps. I'm feeling a bit better, but still need a good week or two to feel right in my skates.
Still testing out the new skates (SP Teri KT-2) and blades (Pattern 99). Here's a very quick video of a few spins...mainly back scratch, flying camel, and death drops. The Pattern 99 rockers are still a bit annoying, but I think I'll be back in full form in a week or two.....so I hope :)
Wow, this girl can spin! One of our Samsung Mobile Explorers caught this ice skater warming up for Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. Seems she knows a few unusual tricks... Requested by many... How to do a sitspin. Hope it helps! :D I am not a profesionaly qualified figure skating coach. Everything in this video comes purely from my own personal experience as a figure skater and from watching/helping other skaters! Try these skating moves at your own risk!
If you are interested in learning how to try these techniques... slow motion is a good and fun way to see the body mechanics. 1. 360 knee / helicopter spins: I'm doing them fast, so I'm not fully exaggerating the full proper body technique... Wind upper body opposite from spin direction (eg. chest towards the right if spinning towards the left, creating momentum/torque). Once chest comes back towards desire direction, drop knee closest towards turn first; never drop down on two knees at once and then try to spin. The spin starts with upper body before any knee drops. Outside skate comes up first... 2. Shot Block Body Slides: I'm doing them really fast and long distance. In reality the mechanics are correct but shorter distance, not as fast (most cases). Knee closet to ground down first, "stack the pads", extend bottom arm to seal and cover more ice. My top arm should be stacking the body too, but it's not. I'm just having fun coming up in reverse just avoiding crashing into the net and camera! 3. Shin Board Rails: "I'm just having stupid fun!" It really has no purpose other than a cool way to dodge an out of control sliding body into the boards! Slow Motion 360 Knee Spins, Shot Block Body Slides, Shin Board Rails These clips have been taken from existing videos on bladeblazecom youtube; check them out so you can see them in real time. Here is my current request list: 1) Spirals off ice 2) Lutz Jump 3) Camel Spin 4) Double Salchow 5) Putting on skating tights 6) The Splits I'm really sorry that these aren't getting done as fast as some people might hope. I'm at school all week, skating on Friday nights, netball training Saturday morning, skating on Sunday morning, and cramming in homework the rest of the time. Also, I can only do these when my mother is out/not listening because she doesn't particularly like me having headshots of myself on the internet. I AM working on them, though, and I'm hoping to get 1 or 2 done each weekend. This weekend it will only be one, because it is my BIRTHDAY tomorrow. :D So yeah, please don't message me every day, asking me when it's going to be up, it won't make me any faster. :P Just keep checking the request list. Here are some of my skating spins.
After watching Olympic ice skating, we made our own ice skater. As our ice skater tucks in its arms it spins faster. We experimented with motions to make our robot as ice skater-like as possible. Sorry, no triple axels. Ever wondered why ice skaters spin faster when they tuck in their arms? We built a robot to do the same thing. Using a Vernier Rotary Motion Sensor, we were able to measure the velocity of the spinning robot with its arms outwards and pulled inwards. As the robot pulled its arms in, its velocity increased. Next, we wanted to see if we could build a robot that could keep constant angular velocity. This robot compensates for slowing down due to friction by adjusting the height of its arms. Using a Vernier low-g accelerometer mounted on the front of the robot, facing outwards, the robot could measure its centripetal acceleration. By maintaining a constant angular acceleration, the robot has constant velocity. We connected the Vernier Rotary Motion Sensor to a labpro and viewed the flat velocity graph on a computer with Logger Pro. Once the ice skater's arms are as close inwards as possible, the ice skater is unable to maintain constant velocity. This drop in velocity is easily noticable on the graph. In a control test, we spun the robot without running the program. Its velocity slowly decreased.

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME PRIVATE MESSAGES ABOUT THIS SPIN - I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THEM. This is an item from Channel 10 news on 24/8/07 about Kayla Doig, a skater from Queensland. At the Australian Figure Skating Championships she was given a bonus for having invented a new move and was told to give it a name. She also got a two point bonus. Nice to see figure skating get some coverage on Australian TV. Edited 19/2/08 - I have removed the comments and disable the comment feature.
