At the 2010 Young Muslims Conference "Happily ever hereafter" in Hartford, CT Memorial Day weekend, the first two rows were reserved for Muslim brothers and sisters that are deaf. It was the most inspiring and rejuvenating sight to see but my first reaction was nothing but tears and self-contradiction. As tears pour from my eyes, I asked myself how do they believe in Allah SWT? And how is their iman being fueled? Non-deaf Muslims have the ability to hear lectures and reminders but deaf-Muslims are faced with a series of challenges that make it difficult for them to obtain Islamic knowledge and reminders. In other words, deaf Muslims disability is not their hearing but the availability of Islamic knowledge. Can you imagine being deaf? You cannot hear your child utter their first words. You cannot hear the beautiful recitation of the Qur'an! You cannot hear Jummah khutbah! A whole source of knowledge is difficult to acquire. After the tears stopped I was internally conflicted. I saw a group of Muslims that was striving for Allah's pleasure despite the handicap Allah SWT placed onto them.
