Google Tech Talk September 20, 2010 Presented by Prof. Moustafa Youssef. ABSTRACT In this talk, we present our recent results on using the internal sensors available on the Android platform for enhancing both the accuracy and energy-efficiency of the Android location provider. In the first part of the talk, we present CellSense, a probabilistic RSSI-based fingerprinting location determination system for GSM phones. We discuss the challenges of implementing a probabilistic fingerprinting localization technique in GSM networks and present the details of the CellSense system and how it addresses the challenges. Results for two different testbeds, representing urban and rural environments, show that CellSense provides at least 23.8% enhancement in accuracy in rural areas and at least 86.4% in urban areas compared to other RSSI-based GSM localization systems. This comes with a minimal increase in computational requirements. In the second part of the talk, introduce a low-energy calibration-free localization scheme based on the available internal sensors in many of today's phones. We start by energy profiling the different sensors that can be used for localization. Based on that, we propose GAC: a hybrid GPS/accelerometer/compass scheme that depends mainly on using the low-energy accelerometer and compass sensors and uses the GPS infrequently for synchronization. We implemented our system on Android-enabled cell phones and evaluated it in both highways and intra-city driving ...

This video was published in the video proceedings of the 2006 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, held in Orlando, Florida, May 2006; sites.google.com provides related papers. In the biological world, grasping, manipulation, and exploration tasks are frequently performed by tongues, trunks, and tentacles. Continuum robots such as the OctArm seek to mimic this wide range of abilities, allowing use in unstructured environments. Although a large variety of continuum robots have been developed as both commercial products and as research endeavors, video studies which concentrate on grasping, manipulation, and exploration tasks are rare. This video addresses this lack by illustrating the types of tasks for which continuum manipulators are uniquely suited. A series of outdoor and laboratory tests reveal the wide variety of novel grasping, manipulation, and exploration tasks which the OctArm continuum trunk can perform. These abilities demonstrate the capabilities of continuum manipulators and suggest further research to extend their abilities.
This video was included in video the Proceedings of the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, Oct. 2007, San Diego, CA. See sites.google.com for related papers. Continuum robots are biologically-inspired by the invertebrate organisms such as octopus arms and elephant trunks. These robots with a backbone-less structure offer a superior performance in unstructured and cluttered environments such as collapsed buildings, unknown geographical terrain, holes and tunnels. This video features OctArm, a continuum robot that demonstrates its capabilities in whole arm manipulation, biologically-inspired maneuvering, and grasping. The video also depicts a 3D graphical model of OctArm in that can be rendered in real-time in MATLAB's Real-Time Workshop.

Shake Menus were developed by Sean White, David Feng, and Steve Feiner at Columbia University's Computer Graphics and User Interfaces Lab ( www.cs.columbia.edu ). The video accompanied a paper presented at IEEE ISMAR 2009 ( www.ismar09.org ). Menus play an important role in both information presentation and system control. We explore the design space of shake menus, which are intended for use in tangible augmented reality. Shake menus are radial menus displayed centered on a physical object and activated by shaking that object. One important aspect of their design space is the coordinate system used to present menu options. We conducted a within-subjects user study to compare the speed and efficacy of several alternative methods for presenting shake menus in augmented reality (world-referenced, display- referenced, and object-referenced), along with a baseline technique (a linear menu on a clipboard). Our findings suggest trade-offs amongst speed, efficacy, and flexibility of interaction, and point towards the possible advantages of hybrid approaches that compose together transformations in different coordinate systems. In our ISMAR 2009 paper, we also describe qualitative feedback from use and present several illustrative applications of the technique including game authoring ( http ). This work was funded in part by NSF Grant IIS-03-25867. Any opinions, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the authors and do not necessarily ...

Mike Stonebacker has written several papers predicting the end of "one size fits all" commercial database systems. He cites experimental evidence showing that the major RDBMS vendors' systems can be outperformed by 1-2 orders of magnitude by specialized engines in the data warehouse, stream processing, text, and scientific database markets. Stonebacker argues that the current systems used are 25 year-old legacy code that should be retired in favor of a collection of from scratch specialized engines. The DBMS vendors (and the research community) should start fresh and design systems for tomorrows requirements. This talk explores the experimental evidence supporting these conclusions and the research challenges that will come about from the decline of "one size fits all" database systems. BIO Michael Stonebraker has been a pioneer of database research and technology for over 25 years. He was the main architect of the INGRES relational DBMS,POSTGRES, and the federated data system Mariposa. He has received numerous awards including the ACM System Software award, the ACM SIGMO Innovation Award, and the IEEE Jon Von Neumann medal. He founded three successful Silicon Valley startups to commercialize his prototypes. Forbes recognized him as one of 8 innovators driving the Silicon Valley wealth explosion. Stonebraker is now an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at MIT and is the founder and CTO of StreamBase Systems.
In my last semester at the University of Maryland I had the honor to take a database related course taught by professor Nick Roussopoulos. Professor Roussopoulos has published some amazing papers and has done great research in regards to database technologies over the years. Probably one of his best publications is "An Adaptable Methodology for Database Design. In IEEE Computer" in 1984. I found that the methodology described in that paper is actually still a great tool to plan and design databases. Furthermore, Dr. Roussopoulos has teamed up with a team from the University of Vienna to implement his database design methodology with a computer tool that can automate a bunch of the steps of the process. I will add a small screen capture video at the end of the blog post to show off some of the cool features of this tool. The tool is open source and you can register at this website omi.dke.univie.ac.at to gain access to download it as well as documentation, which actually does include the originally published paper.

Google Tech Talks April 1, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Martin Vetterli A sensor network is a spatio-temporal sampling device with a wireless communications infrastructure. In this talk, after a short overview of the Center on Mobile Information and Communication Systems, where large scale ad hoc and sensor networks are being studied, we will address the following questions related to large sensor networks and their applications in environmental monitoring. 1. The spatio-temporal structure of distributed signals, with an emphasis on the physics behind the signals, and results on sampling. 2. The interaction of distributed source compression and transmission, with a particular focus on joint source-channel coding. This is the key theoretical question in sensor network signal acquisition and communication. 3. Applications in environmental monitoring, like for example tomographic measurements, and a description of a large scale environmental monitoring project in the Swiss Alps. This project, called SensorScope , has generated large and novel data sets for environmental questions, all available in open access. This is joint work with T.Ajdler, G.Barrenetxea, H.Dubois-Ferriere, F.Ingelrest, R.Konsbruck (EPFL), and M.Gastpar (UC Berkeley). The work is sponsored by the Center on Mobile Information and Communication Systems (www.mics.org), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Martin Vetterli received the Dipl. Google Tech Talks February 6, 2009 ABSTRACT Over the last several decades computer architects have been phenomenally successful turning the transistor bounty provided by Moore's Law into chips with ever increasing single-threaded performance. During many of these successful years, however, many researchers paid scant attention to multiprocessor work. Now as vendors turn to multicore chips, researchers are reacting with more papers on multi-threaded systems. While this is good, we are concerned that further work on single-thread performance will be squashed. To help understand future high-level trade-offs, we develop a corollary to Amdahl's Law for multicore chips [Hill & Marty, IEEE Computer 2008]. It models fixed chip resources for alternative designs that use symmetric cores, asymmetric cores, or dynamic techniques that allow cores to work together on sequential execution. Our results encourage multicore designers to view performance of the entire chip rather than focus on core efficiencies. Moreover, we observe that obtaining optimal multicore performance requires further research BOTH in extracting more parallelism and making sequential cores faster. This talk is based on an HPCA 2008 keynote address. Speaker: Mark D. Hill Mark D. Google Tech Talks December 8, 2008 ABSTRACT User search query logs have proven to be very useful, but have vast potential for misuse. Several incidents have shown that simple removal of identifiers is insufficient to protect the identity of users. Publishing such inadequately anonymized data can cause severe breach of privacy. While significant effort has been expended on coming up with anonymity models and techniques for microdata/relational data, there is little corresponding work for query log data -- which is different in several important aspects. In this work, we take a first cut at tackling this problem. Our main contribution is to define effective anonymization models for query log data, along with techniques to achieve such anonymization. Speaker: Dr. Jaideep Vaidya Dr. Jaideep Vaidya is an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University. He received his Masters and Ph.D. at Purdue University and his Bachelors degree at the University of Mumbai. His research interests are in Data Mining, Privacy, Security, and Information Sharing. This video was published in the video proceedings of the 2006 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, held in Orlando, Florida, May 2006; www.ece.msstate.edu provides related papers. In the biological world, grasping, manipulation, and exploration tasks are frequently performed by tongues, trunks, and tentacles. Continuum robots such as the Oct¬Arm seek to mimic this wide range of abilities, allowing use in unstructured environments.
See www.ece.msstate.edu for related papers.
Google Tech Talks October 29, 2008 ABSTRACT For six years, I have worked on learning quality predictors from NASA data. Based on that experimence, this talk offers the following lessons from the trenches: 1) Real world data collection is more like ambulance chasing that bus driving. The old DoD model of rigorous process control just breaks down in the modern era of distributed software development. Rather than lament lack of formal process, we should adapt our learning methods to handle the idiosyncrasies of our data. 2) Accuracy, correlation and precision and not accurate or precise and may not correlate with any decision making process. This is especially true for data sets where only a small percentage of the data contains the target concept. 3) Static code attributes are a wide and shallow well- easy to get to the bottom, very hard to get much further. Our learners may have learned all they can learn from these attributes. 4) The only way up is sideways. My data miners have struck a performance ceiling and the only way up is to change the performance target. 5) The performance ceiling is very close- we can exploit that. Rather than large-scale automatic methods, it may be more productive to explore human-in-the-loop interactive learning strategies. 6) We can talk, but will they listen? Many times, I have found a clear signal in a software engineering data set. Clearly, our learners are good enough to assist managers in the difficult task of managing software projects ...
