Britain's Border Control Force maintains a presence in Calais France, which is the main route by which illegal immigrants enter the UK. Thousands of lorries enter the UK every day from France and many are harbouring illegal immigrants. This video shows how these illegal immigrants are caught, and the lengths they go to avoid detection while hiding in lorries. Immigration officers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their use of technology to detect illegal immigrants in lorries, but they simply do not have the human resources to check every single lorry entering the UK each day. In 2007 alone, over 12000 of them were stopped by UK Immigrant officers As a consequence many illegal immigrants are still able to enter the UK this way every year, resulting in a huge industry now operated by organised criminal gangs who smuggle people into the UK, provide false documentation and low-paid employment. Human-trafficking is also linked to forced prostitution, drug abuse and violent crime in our towns and cities.

Gordon Brown was today accused of misleading the British people over immigration after the head of the national statistics watchdog criticised him for mis-using statistics. UK Statistics Authority chair Sir Michael Scholar delivered a stinging rebuke to the Prime Minister as he accused him of using data that was 'not comparable' in a podcast which sparked protests from opposition parties last week. The embarrassing rebuke comes as the Mr Brown today condemned the Conservatives for appealing to the 'worst instincts of nationalism and xenophobia'. And the ruling cast a shadow over Mr Brown's attempt to position Labour as the party of fairness and responsibility on immigration. Since 2004 this once prosperous market town has received up to 9000 immigrants seeking work - the majority from Eastern Europe. To test if the town needs so many foreign workers, immigrant employees are temporarily removed from their jobs, and the work given to the local unemployed. Now the town's British workers have a chance to prove they can do it. Eleven British unemployed workers are recruited to go into a range of different Wisbech workplaces including a potato company, an asparagus farm, an Indian restaurant and a building site run by a local landlord. Moving beyond the workplace, Evan Davis investigates how the town's local public services, such as schools and the NHS, are coping with the demands of the new arrivals. As the British unemployed workers get to grips with their new jobs, this documentary examines the facts and dispels the myths around the subject of immigration.
