Critical Mass is a riding event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. The purpose of Critical Mass is not formalized beyond the DIRECT ACTION of meeting at a set location and time and riding as a GROUP through city streets. Wilmingtons critical mass originates at the outdoor clock of UNCW. Most people ride bicycles, but anyone able to follow the GROUP is welcome, joggers, inline skaters, skate-boarders, etc. The route varies but is typically about a 10 miles and may go downtown, the beaches or along any major street in Wilmington. If you were watching the inauguration ceremonies on television today, you saw not only the president and the vice-president being sworn in, and the masses of cheering crowds, all blathered over ceaselessly by empty suits and empty skirts. You also saw various dignitaries, members of the senate and house of representatives, milling around, both before and after the oath of office. John Kerry for example, prior to the swearing-in, looked like a lonely horse standing in a field as he was ignored by those trying to get a better glimpse at obama. I wished someone would come up to him and give him a feedbag. And then there was the strange case of the queen of diamonds, Dianne Feinstein. She was there acting as a sort of overblown mistress of ceremonies for the whole event. And throughout the proceedings, there was an interesting interplay between her and barack obama. As they were walking into the capitol building. Feinstein was edging ever closer to Obama. It reached the point where she was giving him only an inch or two of breathing space. And then a marine guard stepped in between them, as if too relieve Obama of having to be so close to her. She seemed to be edging as close as she possibly could to the source of power. And then afterwards, once he had bungled the oath of office, and given an uninspiring speech, obama walked away from the podium. And again, di fi tried to get too close to the president. But this time, as you could see if you were watching the tv closely, he got sick of her being so close and sort of hipped her out of the way. Is the body language we saw play out in this incident a foreshadowing of things to come? What is Dianne Deinstein angling for? But that wasnt the only bizzare sideshow to this event. Dick Dheney, who claimed to have pulled a back muscle, was pushed around in a wheelchair for the entire inauguration. It was strange to see him hunch himself over in an exaggerated way, almost as if to elicit sympathy from potential prosecutors. And then, most strangely of all, when he was wheeled up to his limo after the oath of office, he stood up from his wheelchair and gets himself into the car easily. it was a complete show, which none of the rest of the media seems to have caught. The crowd was littered with these little power dramas. Can you imagine the hindreds of congressmen, senators, cabinet members, ex presidents, each of whom is ude to being the center of their own particular universe, each smiling superficially and glancing around furtively as they realize that they are no longer the center of attention. A thousand egos crushed. A thousand self-images of the body politick bruised. Tulipomania In 1841, a british journalist named Charles Mackay wrote a book called the extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds. it described a phenomenon of the 1630s in holland called tulipomania, in what may have been the first recorded advent of a speculative bubble. The dutch began bidding the prices of tulips higher and higher until they started to sell for as much as 10 times what the average worker in Holland made. Some people have compared this to the housing bubble, and the resulting mortgage crisis i the united states. But the reason im talking about it today is slightly different. Because in this country weve gone from tulipomania to obama mania, the same bursting of the speculative bubble may ensue. The left, and even many so called conservatives, have invested so much hope in Barack Obama that were he to fail to live up to their expectations ,we might not see an economic collapse, but a political collapse. Anyone with such ridiculous expectations placed apon them by american liberals, even though he might be a liberal himself, is bound to fail to extent or another. and yet again and again he has been trumpeted as the next messiah and when those inevitable failures come, the obama mania bubble will burst, and liberals will be wrecked on the shores of their own delusions. Again the title of mackays book was the extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds. and today of all days we are seeing the madness of crowds. New Jersey-01-05-09-While driving home near interstate 287 northbound, I pulled over to watch the lights. They lasted about 15-20 minutes, then shot off into the distance. I took a short video taken with my camera. My passenger and I both experienced awe as we watched. Neither of us have seen anything remotely close to this before. The lights must have been visible for miles. They changed in pattern and shape throughout the 20 minutes or so. Second Report As an amateur astronomer of nearly 20 years experience, this is the second time I have seen something in the sky that is difficult to explain. I was on my apartment stoop smoking a cigarette when my neighbor, who was just coming home after parking his car in our complexs lot, called my attention to something around the corner of the building. I moved to share his line of sight and immediately saw an equilateral triangle composed of six red lights. The lights shone at approximately -2.5 magnitude and covered an area of roughly 9 square degrees in the sky. Three lights marked each of the triangles corners, and three others were arranged outside around them, forming a larger triangle, equal in proportion and orientation to the inner one. As I watched, the individual points were in motion with respect to each other, but the group appeared to hang motionless in the southwest sky. At this point, the approximate alt-az of the lights was 160°(SSE) by 35° elevation. I ran inside and retrieved my 6x30 image stabilized binoculars to get a better look. The formation had shifted to an irregular lambda shape of five or six lights when I came back outside. Through the binoculars, the lights appeared as tiny points against a backdrop of clouds illuminated by nearby Morristown. They were clearly below the cloud deck compared to airplanes elsewhere in the sky at the time, and appeared to be separate objects in no way connected by a larger structure. They moved steadily in ascending, lateral, and descending directions in a manner that seemed to display deliberate coordination, but there was no noticeable sound of aircraft. I returned inside again and readied my digital camera after waking my fiancé. By the time I started collecting video, the visible lights had been reduced to three or four and had moved to approximately 130°(SE) by 20° elevation and the formation covered less than the area of the full moon. By this time, eight minutes had passed from when I originally observed the lights. My fiancé and I watched them, with two of my neighbors, as they hung low in the southeast sky, flickering in a tiny triangle. They shifted into a straight line before the individual lights began to rapidly descend beyond tree line one by one. One or two could still be seen hovering near the horizon in the distance before they vanished, leaving only a solitary beacon remaining higher up until it abruptly faded. If the lights had not ascended during this event, I would have been fairly certain they were some kind of aviation flares, but I cannot confirm, as I am not familiar with that sort of thing.
A training ship renaming ceremony took place Saturday (01-10-09) at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to honor the Kennedy family. The training ship has been renamed the United States Training Ship Kennedy. Numerous dignitaries attended the event, including US Congressman William Delahunt, Massachusetts Senate President Therese Murray and Joseph P. Kennedy III- son of former Congressman Joseph Kennedy. Several hundred cadets and well wishers also attended the event which was held at 11:00 AM Saturday morning.

GULF OF OMAN (Jan. 1 2009) SH-60 Sea Hawk Helicopters assigned to the Tridents of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 3 transfer ordnance and Sailors from USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) to USS San Antonio (LPD 17). The amphibious transport dock ship San Antonio is the command ship for combined Task Force (CTF) 151. CTF 151 is a multinational task force that conducts counter-piracy operations in and around the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Red Sea and was established to create a lawful maritime order and develop security in the maritime Environment.
