The Master of Ceremonies, Provost/Academic Pro-Rector and CEU University Professor, Howard Robinson, delivered Opening Remarks. In his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, CEU, Leon Botstein, presented the Insignia of Office of President and Rector to Professor John Shattuck. Following the Inaugural Address by President and Rector Shattuck -- George Soros, Founder and Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees, CEU, also spoke. Guest of honor, Justice Richard J. Goldstone, former Chief Prosecutor for War Crimes Tribunals on Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, Head of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, delivered the Ceremonial Address. Justice Goldstone, 1959 BA 1962 LLB (Wits) practiced as an Advocate at the Johannesburg Bar. In 1980 he was made Judge of the Transvaal Supreme Court. In 1989 he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. From July 1994 to October 2003 he was a Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. He is presently Bacon-Kilkenny Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Fordham Law School. Reflecting President Shattucks great appreciation for Budapest and its rich musical heritage, the Orchestra of the Budapest Philharmonic Society performed two musical pieces, conducted by Dr. Botstein (who is also the music director and conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra [1992 ] and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra among his numerous musical credentials). The first piece was Johannes Brahmss thank you for an honorary doctorate, The Academic Festival Overture, which evokes the meaning of university. The second piece was Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 (New World Symphony), auspicious on this occasion both for its multinational character and the new world it celebrates. In announcing the appointment, Botstein had noted I am delighted that the university gained such a remarkable leader. John has worked tirelessly to promote open society across the globe, and his leadership will reinforce the universitys commitment to international justice and the rule of law. Shattuck added, CEU has the capacity to be a new model for international education, a major convener on the international challenges of our time, and a source of support around the world for building open and democratic societies that respect human rights.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has inaugurated the Global Vipassana Pagoda at Gorai in Mumbai on Sunday. The 325 feet tall pagoda structure has been established by the Global Pagoda Foundation to promote the practice of Vipassana. Vipasana in the Buddhist tradition means insight into the nature of reality. The centre of the Global Pagoda boasts of the worlds largest stone dome built without any supporting pillars. The Pagoda is hollow from inside, and this portion serves as a very large meditation hall for over 8000 people enabling them to practice Vipassana meditation as taught by Acharya Goenka. Lord Buddhas bone relics have been enshrined in the central locking stone of the dome. The grand size and the architectural style of the pagoda is aimed at reinforce Indias global image on spiritual tourism map. The tall pagoda building looms majestically over the GVF complex, spread over 13 acres of lush greenery, near picturesque Gorai in northwest Mumbai, barely a kilometre from the Arabian Sea. Pagodas are multi-tiered structures common in China, Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and other countries where Buddhism is followed. At the centre of the pagoda building, the tallest pillar-less dome in the world has been constructed measuring 280-ft in diameter and 90-ft height, flanked by two 60-ft tall pagodas, claimed Vallabh Bhanshali, a GVF trustee. Designed by Indian architect Chandubhai Sompura on the lines of the She Dagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar, this pagoda is a hollow structure, having a dome of 280-ft diameter. Below it is a massive 6000-sq pillar-less meditation hall, which can accommodate 8000 people at a time, he said. It is more than three times the size of the large masonry structure - the Gol Gumbaz in Bijapur, Karnataka, which is 90 ft in diameter. The pagoda is the outcome of efforts by nearly 700 labourers toiling daily for the past 11 years to make what is billed as the 8th wonder of the world. Combining ancient building principles with modern techniques of construction, Sompura finally guided a structure using the ?interlocking principle of construction? for the huge stones - each weighing around 600-700 kg. The entire structure has consumed over 2.5 million tonne of Jodhpur stone. Mr Bhanshali said though Goenka?s GVF started in Igatpuri, around 120 km away from Mumbai, it has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with independent vipassana meditation centres. www.pressbrief.in

Amy and I had an amazing time in DC for the inauguration. We went to the concert at Lincoln Memorial on Sunday, but I only brought my video camera on the 20th. It was a crazy day, and we almost didn't make it! I know that many people were turned away from gates that were eventually/miraculously opened when we arrived. Here is a short recap of our experience. I didn't get as much video as I had originally wanted for two main reasons: 1. We were running our butts off. 2. My hand was freezing!

Waving and cheering in jubilation, they stretched from the inaugural platform at the US Capitol toward the Lincoln Memorial in the distance. With 11 million Americans out of work and trillions of dollars lost in the stock market's tumble, Obama emphasized that his biggest challenge is to repair the tattered economy left behind by outgoing President George W.
