The new currency icon is an amalgam of the character for ''Ra'' in the ancient Devanagari script used in Hindi and the Roman capital ''R'' without the stem. ''The symbol for the rupee would lend a distinctive character and identity to the currency and further highlight the strength and robustness of the Indian economy as also a favoured destination for global investments,'' the government said in a statement. The introduction of the rupee is attributed to the 16th century ruler, Sher Shah Suri, who built the famous Grand Trunk Road from Kabul to Delhi. Until now it had been identified by the abbreviations ''Rs'', ''Re'' or ''INR''. The Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, said he was happy that the rupee had joined the ''exclusive club of international currencies which have their own special symbols''. The rupee is currently referred to by abbreviations like Rs, Re or INR. The Indian rupee has achieved parity with major currencies such as the dollar, euro, pound sterling and yen in one respect: it now has its own symbol. India's cabinet on 14 JULY 2010 approved the adoption of the new symbol after holding a competition that drew more than 3000 entries, which were evaluated by a deputy governor of the central bank as well as artists and designers. The winning symbol was created by Uday Kumar, a post-graduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology. He beat 3000 other entries to win the cash prize of 250000 rupees ($7388). The symbol is an amalgam of the Indian Devanagari script Ra and the Roman capital letter R without the stem. There are now plans to have the new symbol introduced on computer keyboards shortly and is expected to be in international use in about two years' time.

Now Indian Rupee has a new symbol and this is how it looks. This new symbol which has been shortlisted through a contest run by Finance Ministry of India. You can read about that Rupee design contest here. The basic aim of the new symbol is to provide the Indian rupee international recognition as the country's economy exerts more influence in the global space, the unique sign will also help isolate the currency from the current abbreviation 'Rs' which is used by neighbouring Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The winning designers concept was based on the Tricolour and "arithmetic equivalence". While the white space between the two horizontal lines gives the impression of the national flag with the Ashok Chakra, the two bold parallel lines stand for 'equals to', representing balance in the economy, both within and with other economies of the world. The winning designer is an IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar.

An arrested ISI agent has exposed the codes used to smuggle in fake currency into the country. Counterfeit currency has been for a long pumped in from Pakistan to destabalise India's economy. A letter by the Ministry of Home Affairs pins Pakistan for a fake currency racket. In the letter, the ministry claims that ISI agent Vicky Maniyar, who is under arrest, has confessed to this ongoing racket. The letter confirms what India has suspected that, the Pakistan government printing presses are being used to print counterfeit Indian currency. Further fake Indian currency is also sold using codes like 'chappal'. Singapore dollars are being sold under code name 'coffee' and US dollars are referred to as 'achar'. The letter also claims that there is a demand for fake currency in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and New Delhi. Friday, 04 September 2009 : Former Crown Prince Paras Shah has refuted reports in Indian news media (and carried by some Nepali media) alleging him of being involved in fake Indian currency note racket in association with notorious underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Issuing a press release on Wednesday, Paras condemned the reports as 'false and malicious', adding that "it is a condemnable propaganda directed against the sovereign people of Nepal from a foreign land". "He further said he was seriously concerned with the 'fictitious and misleading' reports again appearing in the Indian media against him "which were intended to spread illusion in the minds of the Nepali people at large." Shah, who has been living mostly in Singapore since the fall of monarchy but is in Kathmandu after the reports surfaced, further said he has been "dragged into controversy taking advantage of the current fluid political situation in the country even though I have been leading a responsible and dutiful life as an ordinary Nepali citizen". The state should protect the rights of all Nepali citizens, including him, who are staying outside the country and suffers such misleading allegations, the statement reads.
