The 2004 Asian Tsunami was caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. The resulting tsunami itself is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Asian Tsunami, Indonesian Tsunami, and Boxing Day Tsunami. The earthquake was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing nearly 230000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet) high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the hardest hit. With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on aseismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.4 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The plight of the many affected people and countries prompted a widespread humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than $7 billion (2004 US dollars) in humanitarian aid.

It's been five years since a massive earthquake-triggered tsunami left more than two hundred thousand people dead across south east Asia. Now new amateur video is surfacing, showing powerful images after the tremors struck and waves battered coasts. On December 26, 2004, a tsunami killed more than 200000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries. At this resort beach in Koh Racha, a short boat trip away from Phuket, locals and holidaymakers ran from the coast, as the powerful wave smashed the shore, sweeping away everything in its path. Elsewhere, holidaymakers on higher ground could do nothing but helplessly look on as the scale of the disaster became apparent. Around 226-thousand people died in the disaster. More than 128 thousand people were killed in Indonesia alone, with Aceh on the Indonesian island of Sumatra one of the most devastated regions. Survivors who were left stranded on rooftops, floating on debris, and in trees were also left with the gruesome task of recovering and burying the tens of thousands who died.

To better respond to natural disasters, governments should invest more in risk reduction for vulnerable communities and make sure to reflect gender concerns in the recovery process, says a report presented today at the United Nations. Involving local communities in the recovery process, according to The Tsunami Legacy: Innovation, Breakthroughs and Change report, is as instrumental as installing high-tech early warning systems. The report also highlights the need for governments to ...

It includes footage of the deployment of the first Indian Ocean Tsunami Detection (DART) buoy in December 2006, of a simulation exercise in Padang, Indonesia, a training course in seismology that took place in 2007, as well as interviews with scientists. The program was funded by USAID. Filmed by Walter D. Mooney (USGS, Menlo Park) Edited by Justine Gesell (USGS, Menlo Park)...
A collection of clips recorded by people actually in and near the devastating tsunami of December 2004. To my knowledge, no such video exists of the 30 - 40 foot tall wall of water which came rushing towards the coastline. If anyone was able to get it on video, no doubt the person holding the camera was swept out to sea or swept inland to his death.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was not the first of its kind, according to research in Nature. Two groups of scientists have found sedimentary evidence for possible predecessors to the 2004 event in Thailand and Sumatra. They discuss their findings here in this full length video.
