Pendleton, Indiana (April 30, 2010) One of the major events of the year, in Pendleton, Indiana, kicked off today, the State Road 38 Sale. We spoke with some of the vendors youll see here in Pendleton including Dennis Ashley with the Flower Cart and Tuxedo Shoppe about the event this weekend. The State Road 38 Sale runs from today through Sunday.

These are various photos of the former Erie Lackawanna Railroad through Decatur Indiana, also includes the former Pennsylvania RR Station, Penn crossed EL and Nickel Plate on Southside of Decatur. Some of the photos are the current condition of the ROW itself, much of it on the Indiana side has been converted back to farmground. I also included in the the portion of track from Glenmore Ohio, to Ohio City, talk about a "Ghost Junction", Ohio City is it, sure too bad. I also have recent photos of the Elgin Ohio area, 8-10 miles East of Ohio City, this section is still used from Lima Ohio to service the elevator at Elgin, both tank and hopper cars are present. This also includes photos I recently found on the net of the Erie Western Railway, in and around the Decatur area.The Erie Western was incorporated in August 1977 and began operations under an Interstate Commerce Commission car service order on September 25, 1977 to operate freight service for 158 miles on the former Erie Lackawanna Railway main line from the Indiana/Ohio state line near Wren, Ohio west to Hammond, Indiana. The Erie Western was created because the former main line of the Erie Lackawanna Railway, which went bankrupt in 1972, was not included in the federal government's creation of Conrail, prompting the Erie Western to be formed by shippers and others who wanted to retain and preserve rail service. I am not sure whether or not the Erie Western went as far as Wren Ohio, which is roughly 1 one mile inside ...
"Flowers" is a 16mm film I made in the late 1960s, during the Vietnam War. It features my father and mother Robert and Elizabeth Davenport. My father Robert C Davenport was born in Norfork, NB in 1905 and moved to the DC area with the New Deal. Robert C. Davenport conceived and built Hollin Hills, a well known community of contemporary houses south of Alexandria, Virginia. My mother was born in 1906, the daughter of Hungarian immigrants from South Bend, Indiana. She helped my father with Hollin Hills as a secretary. My parents bought a 1000 acre farm in the Crooked Run Valley between Delaplane and Paris Virginia in the early 1950 when land here was $50 an acre. They retired to the farm which they had named Hollin and my father raised registered Angus cattle, specializing in selling bulls for commercial herds. Both Elizabeth and Robert are buried in the cemetery at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Delaplane, VA.

Interview with famed Munchkin Margaret Pellegrini. Pellegrini held two roles in the 1939 Wizard of Oz classic. "I was one of the Sleepy Heads in the bird's nest, and also one of the gals who wore a flower pot hat. They put me right in the front row!" Ever since then, the flower pot hat has been her trademark. When Alabama born and raised Pellegrini was 14 years old, she visited the Tennessee State Fair to help her brother in law pass out potato chip samples. "Some little people came down the walkway and asked if I'd like to join up with their midget show. I said no!" But at the same time the teenager didn't know she was going to be a little person. "I had no idea I was going to stay small, but I guess they saw something in me that made them know before I did. They said that I might change my mind and told me they'd keep in touch." Soon she got a letter from a Hollywood agent asking if she'd like to be in a motion picture called the Wizard of Oz. "I was so excited. I would get room and board, transportation and $50 a week for six weeks of filming. We decided I could take the job!" Since she was only fifteen and on a to train to Hollywood all by herself they appointed another little person to be her guardian for the trip. "Judy Garland was a sweet girl - a typical teenager and she loved the munchkins," recalls Pellegrini. "During film breaks, Judy would sit and chat with us on the Yellow Brick Road. Joe Rice is a third generation art glass blower. He started helping out at his uncles glass studio when he was 12 and began his professional glass career there when he turned 16; getting paid $1 an hour. In 1987 Joe purchased The House of Glass, which he now co-owns with his own daughter. While Joe continues to make his grandfathers traditional flower glass paperweight, he also produces paperweights with other designs, decorative glass art and collector class glass marbles. Joe recently began doing more corporate work as well, offering sandblasted paperweights and customized works. The Indiana Artisans program appealed to Joe as a way to develop broader relationships, especially with younger audiences. We were always so busy taking care of customers that we didnt look to develop marketing or products for next generation, Joe says. The biggest advantage of the program is it allows artisans who do this professionally to lean on the State for support. A self-described production designer, Joe also considers himself to be a glass historian. He enjoys sharing the history of glass making with the group and students who visit the studio. He opens his studio daily for free to group tours and field trips. Frequently three generations of family members come to see us to introduce the experience to their kids.
