Four people were killed and at least 40 more were injured after an outdoor stage collapsed in Indianapolis on Saturday night - minutes before the country group Sugarland was set to perform. Powerful winds from an approaching storm sent the Indiana State Fair stage to the ground about 9 pm, crushing some concertgoers and trapping others, authorities said. "It was like it was in slow motion," Sugarland fan Amy Weathers told the Indianapolis Star. "You couldn't believe it was actually happening." The victims are believed to have been seated between the stage and the grandstand in a VIP area called the "Sugar Pit," the Star reported. Thousands of people were awaiting the start of the show when the stage rigging fell onto the track. Paramedics and rescue crews from throughout the city converged on the grounds Saturday night. Workers were frantically digging a hole to try to reach those trapped beneath the rigging. At least 24 people were transported to area hospitals, the Star reported. "We are all right," Sugarland posted on Twitter just before 10 pm "We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need your strength." Emily Davis, who was in the Sugar Pit, said the stage collapsed just after the crowd had been told it might be evacuated if the storm worsened.
Indiana Stage Collapse - compiled footage - Stage rigging at state fair in US collapses due to strong winds, leaving at least four people dead and dozens injured. Strong winds caused the stage rigging for the outdoor concert to collapse on Saturday night, trapping and injuring concert-goers. Indiana State police spokesman David Bursten told the AP news agency that a "strong gust of wind upset the rigging above the stage at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and caused a collapse of the structure over the stage". The collapse came as thousands of concert-goers were being evacuated from the fairground grandstand to a nearby coliseum. In some ways, Jacob Barnett is just like any other 12-year-old kid. He plays Guitar Hero, shoots hoops with his friends, and has a platonic girlfriend. But in other ways, he's a little different. Jake, who has an IQ of 170, began solving 5000-piece jigsaw puzzles at the age of 3, not long after he'd been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism. A few years later, he taught himself calculus, algebra, and geometry in two weeks. By 8, he had left high school, and is currently taking college-level advanced astrophysics classes—while tutoring his older classmates. And he's being recruited for a paid researcher job by Indiana University. Now, he's at work on a theory that challenges the Big Bang—the prevailing explanation among scientists for how the universe came about. It's not clear how developed it is, but experts say he's asking the right questions. "The theory that he's working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics," Scott Tremaine of Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Studies—where Einstein (pictured) himself worked—wrote in an email to Jake's family. "Anyone who solves these will be in line for a Nobel Prize." Here you can watch Jake question some of the key elements of Albert Einstein's theories on quantum physics: It's not clear where Jake got his gifts from. "Whenever I try talking about math with anyone in my family," he told the Indianapolis Star, "they just stare blankly." But his parents ...
