Cuba is not only an island nation in terms of its geography, but also its economy and politics as a result of the US embargo and the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba's largest source of trade and aid until the Berlin Wall fell in 1991. Cut off from the world's pipeline of food, oil, chemical pesticides and fertilizers, Cuba embarked upon an ambitious program to grow as much of its own organic food as possible in the 1990s during what was known as the "special period." This short video produced by the nonprofit group Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI) peeks into Havana's urban farms and gardens to see what lessons they have to offer other cities working to move toward sustainable food security. Wes Jackson, Ph.D., President of The Land Institute. Salina, Kansas, talks about confronting the planetary challenges we face and making the necessary transition from an "extractive" economy to a "stable state economy" imitating natural systems: no topsoil disruption; no fossil-fuel inputs; no chemical pollution. Dr. Jackson resigned a professorship with tenure to found The Land Institute in 1976. Pew Scholar, MacArthur Fellow, and Right Livelihood Award. Books include Man and the Environment, New Roots for Agriculture, Meeting the Expectations of the Land (edited with Wendell Berry and Bruce Colman), Altars of Unhewn Stone, and Becoming Native to This Place. Dave Ramaswamy, Partner - allied Venture gives an overview of why Agriculture in South America has excellent fundamentals and is well-positioned to feed the burgeoning population in India and the world. Contract farming - can grow soya, wheat, sunflower, peanut, beans and pulses, sugarcane, jatropha and take output to india in raw or processed forms Food processing - setup/acquire oilseed crushing, fruit/vegetable processing facilities Think Agricultural Outsourcing - just like India in software, China in hardware - South America in agriculture Contact: Marcos or Dave at info@alliedventure.com www.alliedventure.com Latin America farmland investment highlights: Prices have fallen due to the global crisis; good entry point in 2009 for long-term investors. Farmland Prices are even lower than those in punjab and tamilnadu Productivity in Argentina/Brazil/Uruguay is three times compared to that in India, in the case of some crops like soy. No unskilled labour problem since everything is mechanised and outsourced; 1000 hectare farm can be managed by 3 to 4 subcontracted workmen. Use of latest agricultural machines and equipment; skilled agronomists and farm managers available. No water problem.. South America has 20% of world freshwater reserves. Logistics, warehouse and transportation world class Clear land titles; low population density means no land squatters. No limits on size of foreign land holdings. www.suprememastertelevision.com ANIMAL AGRICULTURE: THE FACTS VOICE: In 2006, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had estimated that raising animals for meat and dairy was responsible for 18% of global warming; more than all the worlds transportation put together. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to scientists that the livestock industry is playing a more significant role. Dr. Rajendra Pachauri Chair of United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, VEGETARIAN (M): Ive received a number of emails from people that I respect saying that the 18% figure is an underestimate; its a low estimate and in actual fact its much higher. Dr. T. Colin Campbell Renowned nutrition researcher, Cornell University, USA, VEGAN (M): I just had some information just recently, that the new figures now indicate that at least half of the greenhouse gases that are up there now, not that 15 or 20%, at least half and maybe considerably more are due to livestock production. VOICE: Greenhouse gasses are emitted during virtually every step of the meat producing process, including the three major greenhouse gasses: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, & methane. However, what is unaccounted for is the fact that instead of the 23 times figure used in most reports, including that of the United Nations, methane is actually 72-100 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period. For more sustainable living videos, stories and information, visit cookingupastory.com Fred Kirschenmann, a long-time leader in the sustainable agriculture movement, Distinguished Fellow at the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, and a third-generation farmer (an organic farmer himself), completes his thoughtful reflections upon the future of agriculture from his talk at the Organicology conference in Portland, Oregon.
Visit us on the web for more video stories, and information: Cooking Up a Story (cookingupastory.com). Fred Kirschenmann steadfastly warns us, conventional agriculture, and its heavy dependence upon fossil fuels, and irrigated water, simply will not continue to offer a viable means for feeding the world. We have been drawing upon natures reserves of stored energy (hydrocarbons) and water resources at unsustainable rates, and those finite resources are diminishing rapidly; technology alone, will not provide substitute solutions. The argument that conventional agriculture (modern industrial farming) is necessary in order to meet the needs of a growing global population, simply ignores the realities of the elephants in the room. Sustainability, with an emphasis upon the concept of resiliency, and a renewed respect for maintaining the fertility (quality) of the soil, is to Kirschenmann now, the foundation of a new food system toward creating a food revolution.

United States Department of Agriculture, 1942 Hemp for Victory is an educational film promoting hemp farming in the United States. This film contains high-quality information about the Cannabis Sativa plant and large-scale hemp production for industrial use. It has the thorough-yet-entertaining feeling of a Mr. Rogers factory-tour video. The farkinga version of the film is an improvement on previously available editions: 1) the audio and video are synced 2) the complete film is time-compressed into 10 minutes The original version of Hemp for Victory is in the public domain because it is a production of the US government.
Agriculture is easily the most distorted sector, with high tariffs and, in developed countries at least, large amounts of government subsidies through price supports and direct payments. On the other hand, developing countries, who have a comparative advantage in these products, cannot afford to subsidize their agriculture sector and face prohibitive tariffs for their products abroad. The powerful agriculture lobby groups, particularly in the large developed countries, make reform politically difficult. Chris Edwards, Sallie James and Dan Ikenson discuss the inequities of American farm policies. This video was produced by Caleb Brown ( www.twitter.com ) and Austin Bragg ( www.twitter.com ).

visit coanews.org Project Censored is a national research effort launched in 1976 by Dr. Carl Jensen, professor emeritus of Communications Studies at Sonoma State University. Upon Jensen's retirement in 1996, leadership of the project was passed to associate professor of sociology and media research specialist, Dr. Peter Phillips. Under Phillips's guidance, Project Censored tracks the news published in independent journals and newsletters, and every year the group compiles an annual list of 25 news stories of social significance that have been overlooked, under-reported or self-censored by the country's major national news media. Veteran broadcaster Walter Cronkite said Project Censored "is one of the organization's we should listen to, to be assured that our newspapers and broadcasting outlets are practicing thorough and ethical journalism." Phillips says, "the restructuring of media in the United States is creating forms of censorship that are as potentially damaging as overt censorship." "Media corporations have been undergoing a massive merging process that is realigning our sources of information in America," Phillips wrote in a an op-ed recently. Market ready for hemp? The president of Hemp Oil Canada explains why there is a worldwide market for hemp products. What Is It Good For? Hemp's handiness can be traced back hundreds of years. Here are a few examples of its myriad applications: • Paper -- The plant's long, strong fibers make it an alternative to timber for paper. The Declaration of Independence and first Gutenberg Bibles were drafted on hemp. • Construction -- Hemp's woody core makes a good source of boards for construction materials. • Auto parts -- The plant's fiber can be crafted into a composite that is used for interior automobile parts typically made of fiberglass or other materials. • Textiles -- For centuries, hemp fibers have been used for fabrics, both fine and coarse. • Body and health care products -- Oil from the seeds is used in lotions, balms and cosmetics. • Food -- The seeds and oil are high in protein and essential fatty acids and are used in a variety of edibles. • Ethanol -- Though the technology is embryonic at best, hemp's high cellulose content makes it a good ...

The story of Sunnygables and the Babcock family is important for a full understanding of American cultural development in the 20th century. Every American dinner table experienced the changes effected by this farm. The principles and programs developed by HE Babcock helped save the American Farm back then and are now saving farms in other lands. In recent times, the future of the family farm worldwide is in serious jeopardy. Production costs far outweigh low selling prices. This trend, coupled with the fact that, in developing lands, most farmers are unable to afford necessary agricultural technology threaten the continued existence of family farms. In urban United States, most school-aged children have very little idea where their food comes from. When questioned, many youths claim that the food they eat comes from the back room of the supermarket. Those who have some familiarity with agriculture assume that there will always be an abundant supply of food available to the American public. It is hoped that this documentary will create an awareness of these issues and further HE Babcock's mission of education and innovation in the field of agriculture. Farmboy, a film based on the writings of John Babcock, discusses four intertwined themes: 1. John's experience as a farmboy during the Great Depression when agriculture was making the leap from horse to gas-power and mechanization. As a boy, John observed all of the changes taking place around him. He took an active role in ...
