Google Tech Talk June 16, 2010 ABSTRACT: Emmy Noether made perhaps the most significant discovery of the 20th century. A female Jewish intellectual in Nazi Germany (you can do that math), Emmy's was a special approach to life. Noether's Theorem ties the laws of nature -- from Newton's laws to thermodynamics to charge conservation -- directly to the geometry of space and time, the very fabric of reality. It is the basis for the standard model of particle physics, quantum electrodynamics, and grand unified theories including supersymmetry and superstrings. As usual in physics, it gets really interesting when the theorem is violated: answers to the origin of mass and the matter-antimatter asymmetry problems emerge when Noether's theorem is violated. Two things should bother you about Noether's Theorem: (1) how come so few people have heard of Emmy Noether? and (2) why isn't her theorem well known to lovers of science? With the help of a bunch of straw, Ransom Stephens solves these problems on June 16, 2010. Speaker Info: Ransom Stephens, Ph.D. Ransom Stephens, Ph.D., is a professor of particle physics turned writer and speaker. He has worked on experiments at SLAC, Fermilab, CERN, and Cornell; discovered a new type of matter formed by the fusion of two photons, made the most precise measurements of rare bottom quark decays in the world, and was on the team that discovered the top quark. His new novel, The God Patent (www.TheGodPatent.com), is set in the battle between ...

Jeffrey Wasserstrom visits Google in San Francisco to discuss his book "China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know." About the book: Within one generation, China has transformed from an impoverished, repressive state into an economic and political powerhouse. Jeffrey Wasserstrom provides cogent answers to the most urgent questions regarding the newest superpower and offers a framework for understanding its meteoric rise. Focusing his answers through the historical legacies--Western and Japanese imperialism, the Mao era, and the massacre near Tiananmen Square--that largely define China's present-day trajectory, Wasserstrom introduces readers to the Chinese Communist Party, the building boom in Shanghai, and the environmental fall-out of rapid Chinese industrialization. He also explains unique aspects of Chinese culture such as the one-child policy, and provides insight into how Chinese view Americans. Wasserstrom reveals that China today shares many traits with other industrialized nations during their periods of development, in particular the United States during its rapid industrialization in the 19th century. Finally, he provides guidance on the ways we can expect China to act in the future vis-a-vis the United States, Russia, India, and its East Asian neighbors.
June 8, 1987 A traveler's cheque (also traveller's cheque, travellers cheque, traveller's check or traveler's check) is a preprinted, fixed-amount cheque designed to allow the person signing it to make an unconditional payment to someone else as a result of having paid the issuer for that privilege. During the Reagan administration, Abrams gained notoriety for his involvement controversial foreign policy decisions regarding Nicaragua and El Salvador. At the start of Bush's second term, Abrams was promoted to be his Deputy National Security Advisor for Global Democracy Strategy, in charge of promoting Bush's strategy of advancing democracy abroad. His appointment by Bush was controversial due to his conviction in 1991 on two misdemeanor counts of unlawfully withholding information from Congress during the Iran-Contra Affair investigation. Abrams first came to national prominence when he served as Reagan's Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs in the early 1980s and later as Assistant Secretary for ...

www.weforum.org 28.01.2010 Switzerland has been criticized lately On the one hand, Switzerland's direct democracy is a showpiece; on the other hand, it unleashes worldwide consternation. International pressures on bank secrecy lead to concessions in the exchange of fiscal information. The accusation of cherry-picking comes up regularly. Does Switzerland have to fear for its reputation and economy? Did Switzerland react accordingly to the international pressure on tax issues? What consequences will this have on Swiss diplomacy and its role as a mediator in international conflicts? This session is co-organized with the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (SEK-FEPS). Chris Anderson visits Google to present his book "Free" This event took place on July 9, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series. Chris Anderson is the author of the international bestseller The Long Tail. He is the editor in chief of Wired magazine and was a US business editor at The Economist. He began his career at the two premier science journals Science and Nature. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from George Washington University and studied Quantum Mechanics and Science Journalism at the University of California. In his revolutionary bestseller, The Long Tail, Chris Anderson demonstrated how the online marketplace creates niche markets, allowing products and consumers to connect in a way that has never been possible before. Now, in Free, he makes the compelling case that in many instances businesses can profit more from giving things away than they can by charging for them. Far more than a promotional gimmick, Free is a business strategy that may well be essential to a company's survival. The costs associated with the growing online economy are trending toward zero at an incredible rate. Never in the course of human history have the primary inputs to an industrial economy fallen in price so fast and for so long. Just think that in 1961, a single transistor cost $10; now Intel's latest chip has two billion transistors and sells for $300 (or 0.000015 cents per transistor--effectively too cheap to price). The traditional economics of scarcity just ...

In view of the uncertainty that the band would ever do another concert after Knebworth last year, this was indeed a magical moment. Fantasy soon turned to reality as the stage illu¬minated and Jimmy Page hammered out the beginning of "Train Kept A Rollin". It took some time before Robert fully unleashed, and at the start of the show it was hard to hear him properly, but once under way his vocal performance was tremendous. The second number was "Nobody's Fault But Mine", after which Page himself took the microphone to bid good evening to the crowd and introduce "Black Dog" - incredible but true, Jimmy Page actually speaks on stage! Indeed it was Jimmy, most of all, who epitomised the new-found enthusiasm of the group. His guitar playing was excellent - rough at times but any errors were covered by moments of inspired genius. Page dropped his trusty Les Paul in favour of a Strat for "In the Evening" which fea¬tured a marvellously ...

After years of being in a committed relationship, Iranian-born Malihe Kigasar and Elizabeth Kristen have just gotten married at the San Francisco City Hall June 17 the first day same-sex marriage became legal in California. They followed this ceremony with a Persian wedding, where friends and family ground sugar cones over their heads, sharing sweet wishes. 27-year-old Arsham Parsi is proud to see this happy transition in their relationship. From his exile in Toronto, Canada, he works tirelessly on volunteer basis through his Iranian Queer Organization, to help other gays and lesbians at home. Arsham Parsi, Executive Director, Iranian Queer Organization: In 2007, we helped about 80 gays and lesbians and all of them got asylum certificates by UNHCR coming to North America, and about 40 are coming to Canada and Australia in few months. In February this year, Human Rights Watch reported that police raided a private party in Esfahan, arresting more than 30 men. They underwent forensic tests to find evidence to implicate them in homosexual act. Exactly how many homosexuals have been executed in Iran is hard to track. But Iranian Penal Code imposes punishments ranging from 60 lashes to execution for homosexual acts. (GFX: Article 110: The punishment for sodomy where penetration has occurred is death, and the method of execution is at the discretion of the Sharia judge.) Annual Address to the Federal Assembly.Part 2 April 26, 2007 Marble Hall, the Kremlin, Moscow Послание Федеральному Собранию Российской Федерации.Part 2 26 апреля 2007 года Москва, Кремль, Мраморный зал This year will be the first time that the State Duma elections will take place according to the proportional system. In other words, only political parties will take part in the election. The parties lists of candidates will be divided into regional groups so that voters will know exactly who is competing to represent their interests in parliament. This amounts to a revolutionary change and it was a conscious choice that we made in order to achieve real democratisation of the electoral system. It needs to be said frankly that the old system of single-seat electoral districts did not stop influential regional organisations from pushing through their own candidates, making use of the administrative resource at their disposal. We have still not overcome this problem, but the new system does considerably reduce the possibilities for using such methods. Practice shows that the proportional system gives the opposition greater opportunities to expand its representation in the legislative assemblies. This is easily proven through examples, or through statistics, to be more precise. In the three years that this system has been used at regional level, the number of party factions in local parliaments has increased almost four-fold. Today they account for almost two thirds of all ...

The game and its ancillary festivities constitute Super Bowl Sunday. Over the years it has become the most-watched US television broadcast of the year, and has become likened to a de facto US national holiday. In addition, many popular singers and musicians have performed during the Super Bowl's pre-game and halftime ceremonies. Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest US food consumption day, following Thanksgiving. The Super Bowl was first played on January 15, 1967 as part of an agreement between the NFL and its younger rival, the American Football League (AFL) in which each league's championship team would play each other in an "AFL-NFL World Championship Game". After the leagues merged in 1970, the Super Bowl became the NFL's championship game, played between the champions of the league's two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Since the NFL season extends into the New Year, the Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year it was ...

Jan Kubelik (1880-1940) plays "La ronde des lutins" Recorded in London, November 1903 Jan Kubelík (5 July 1880 5 December 1940) was a Czech violinist and composer. He was born in Michle (now part of Prague). His father, a gardener by occupation, was an amateur violinist. He taught his two sons the violin and after discovering Jan's talent, who was aged five at the time, arranged for him to study with Karel Weber and Darel Ondříček. Aged eight he studied at the Prague Conservatory with Otakar Ševčík, of whose technique he became the most famous representative. As a child, he used to practice 10 to 12 hours a day, or "until my fingers started to bleed." After 1898, he toured as a soloist, soon becoming renowned for his great virtuosity and flawless intonation, and his very full and noble tone. He played a Guarneri del Gesù and also two Stradivarius violins: he acquired the 1715 Stradivarius Emperor in 1910. After great success following his debut in Vienna, and in London (where he first appeared at a Hans Richter concert in 1900), Kubelík toured in the USA in 1901 for the first time. He made his first appearance for the Royal Philharmonic Society, London in the season of 1901-2, and in 1902 was awarded the Society's Gold Medal (in succession to Eugène Ysaÿe). In 1902 he brought the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra to London, having assisted it financially in the previous year. In his personal life, in 1903 he married countess Marianne Czáky-Szell, with whom he had eight ...
Artist: Blondie Song: X Offender Album: Blondie [1976] Genre: Punk, New Wave Bio: Blondie is perhaps the most commercially successful band to emerge from the 1970s punk scene. They formed in New York in 1974. The original lineup consisted of Clem Burke (drums), Jimmy Destri (keyboards), Deborah Harry (vocals), Chris Stein (guitar) and Gary Valentine (bass). Blondie released their first album Blondie in 1976. The album was mildly successful and spawned the Australian hit single In The Flesh. Gary Valentine left the band later that year, and they continued briefly as a foursome, recording Plastic Letters which contained the hit Denis. They added Los Angeles-based musicians Nigel Harrison (bass) and Frank Infante (guitar) in 1977. Harrison was a former member of the glam band Silverhead and Infante had played guitar on Plastic Letters to supplement the foursomes sound. In 1978 they released the album that would make them international stars, Parallel Lines. The album spawned several hit singles, including the number one hit Heart Of Glass, Sunday Girl, Hanging On The Telephone and One Way Or Another. They released three more albums (1979s Eat to the Beat, 1980s Autoamerican (containing the number one singles The Tide Is High and Rapture) and 1982s The Hunter) and a number one single Call Me in 1980. In 1980, Harrison contributed several unused Blondie songs to ex-Silverhead singer Michael Des Barres solo album Im Only Human. In 1981, Harry released a solo album Koo Koo ...
Annual Address to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Part 2 April 3, 2001 Moscow, the Kremlin Послание Федеральному Собранию Российской Федерации 3 апреля 2001 года Москва, Кремль The situation requires once more analysing the situation in the country and the objectives that were set earlier, including those announced here in this hall last summer.A year ago it was clear that in order to ensure the success of the strategic transformations we wished to undertake, we would have to bring order to relations between the federal and regional authorities, and that not having clearly delimited powers and effective mechanisms for cooperation between the different levels of power would result in greater economic and social losses. We need a consolidated and effective state power system in order to act on urgent social and economic problems and security issues. I will name just a few of these priorities. The first task is to clearly define the specific powers of the federal centre and the countrys regions. This requires having federal laws, and I emphasise this point, federal laws that divide the powers and responsibilities between the federal and regional authorities. We need to minimise the potential for conflict in this area today by clearly defining the respective powers of the federal and regional authorities, otherwise this situation could give rise to new disputes and will be used by those who oppose this policy of strengthening the federation. The second task is to ...

Butterfly effects, in which small matters lead to significant consequences, are alive at our school. A couple of months ago I received notice of a scrabble competition and since I myself have recently taken a zealous interest in the game, I thought it would be worth a shot to share the news of this event with my students; and fortunately I did for a pair of 2R students had in fact participated in the competition last year, and were quite keen on joining the contest once again; so keen, might I add, that they took it upon themselves to register and prepare themselves for the event, assiduously rehearsing after school, at recess and at lunch, and using me simply as a warm body in company! Suffice it to say, this Scrabble competition swiftly entered the extra-curricular activity pantheon to become one of the most eminent out-of-school programs that my students and I had ever before entered. Filled with the enthusiastic spirit of the game, I volunteered to be a word judge at the event. So during the competition, inside a commodious assembly hall that dwarfs our school's paltry venue, I received dozens upon dozens of white slips of paper, furiously pushed upon me by spasmodic runners, on which were written, oftentimes illegibly, freakish, gnarled combinations of consonants and vowels; my job was to input them into a dictionary program to check their validity, which I did with much diligence and rapidity. Jocularity, too, was present and from some of the more obtuse spellings I ...
