MRS. OBAMA: President Rogge, ladies and gentlemen, Mesdames et Messieurs of the International Olympic Committee: I am honored to be here. I was born and raised on Chicago's South Side, not far from where the Games would open and close. Ours was a neighborhood of working families -- families with modest homes and strong values. Sports were what brought our community together. They strengthen our ties to one another. Growing up, when I played games with the kids in my neighborhood, we picked sides based not on who you were, but what you could bring to the game. Sports taught me self-confidence, teamwork, and how to compete as an equal. Sports were a gift I shared with my dad -- especially the Olympic Games. Some of my best memories are sitting on my dad's lap, cheering on Olga and Nadia, Carl Lewis, and others for their brilliance and perfection. Like so many young people, I was inspired. I found myself dreaming that maybe, just maybe, if I worked hard enough, I, too, could achieve something great. But I never dreamed that the Olympic flame might one day light up lives in my neighborhood. But today, I can dream, and I am dreaming of an Olympic and Paralympic Games in Chicago that will light up lives in neighborhoods all across America and all across the world; that will expose all our neighborhoods to new sports and new role models; that will show every child that regardless of wealth, or gender, or race, or physical ability, there is a sport and a place for them, too ...

timesofearth.com - Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games. Rio beat off the challenges of Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago in a vote by International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegates at the IOC Session in Copenhagen on Friday. COPENHAGEN, Denmark - The Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro has been selected to host the Summer Olympics in 2016. Rio de Janeiro was selected in the final round of the voting at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Brazilian city beat Madrid for the right to host the Summer Games after Chicago and Tokyo were eliminated in earlier rounds. The result of the final ballot was Rio: 66, Madrid: 32. "I honestly believe it is Brazil's time," Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told the IOC voters. "For the others it will be just one more Games. For us it will be an unparalleled opportunity." Chicago was considered a frontrunner along with Rio coming into the vote. But, despite President Obama's participation in Friday's final presentation and Michelle Obama lobbying IOC members here the last three days for her hometown, the Second City suffered a stunning first-round exit. Tokyo went out in the second round, leaving Madrid, which had the powerful backing of former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, as the only challenge to Rio's historic opportunity. Samaranch, who ran the IOC from 1980-2001, offered up a heartstring-pulling argument during Madrid's presentation, saying: "I know that I am very near the end of ...
Presidente do Brasil ressalta a importância da realização dos Jogos Olímpicos na América do Sul e manda um recado: "O Rio está pronto. Os que nos derem esta chance não se arrependerão"..... ( "Our time has come", said Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Copenhagen, in his defense of Rio as the host of the Olympics before the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In his speech, Lula also stressed the good economic times Brazil is going through, talked about what the Games will means to the Brazilians self esteem and reminded that Rio's candidacy was also that of the whole South America. "Our time has come. It has. Among the ten world largest economies, Brazil is the only country that has not hosted the Olympic and Paraolympic Games. For the others, it will be only one more Olympiad. For us, it will be a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. It will increase Brazilians' self esteem, it will consolidate recent achievements, it will stimulate new advances," he said. In defense of Rio, Lula said that the Olympics in Brazil would correct an unbalance, since South America never hosted the Olympic Games. "This candidacy is not ours alone. It's also of a continent with almost 400 million men and women and about 180 million young people. A continent that never hosted the Olympic Games. It is about time to correct this imbalance." Lula also stated that Brazil is living an excellent period with a consolidated economy, which tackled without trepidation the world financial ...
The 2016 Games are going to Rio de Janeiro. Finally, South America gets an Olympics. In a vote of high drama, the bustling Brazilian carnival city of beaches, mountains and samba beat surprise finalist Madrid, which got a big helping hand from a very influential friend. Chicago was knocked out in the first round - in one of the most shocking defeats ever handed down by the International Olympic Committee. President Barack Obama's last-minute hop to Denmark didn't swing the games Chicago's way. He came, saw, charmed but did not conquer. Even Tokyo, which trailed throughout the tight race, did better - eliminated after Chicago in the second round. On Rio's Copacabana beach, where the city will hold beach volleyball in 2016, the party was heading into the night. In Chicago, there was bewildered silence. Rio spoke to IOC members' consciences: the city argued that it was simply unfair that South America has never hosted the games, while Europe, Asia and North America have done so repeatedly. "It is a time to address this imbalance," Brazil's charismatic president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, told the ioc's members before they delivered their verdict. "It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country." As the four cities began their final presentations, analysts say at least 25 of the 101 delegates had not made up their minds who they would vote for, reports CBS News correspondent Sheila macvicar from Copenhagen. The final result was decisive: Rio beat Madrid by 66 ...

Rio de Janeiro has won the contest to host the 2016 Olympics and take the games to South America for the first time after the shock elimination of Chicago in the first round of voting today. There were celebrations on the streets of the city this evening after the announcement by the IOC president Jacques Rogge. Chicago's early exit was seen as a snub for Barack Obama, who flew to Copenhagen to represent his former home town. Obama, the first serving US president to appear before the IOC, told delegates he hoped that the games would show "America at its best is open to the world". Michelle Obama arrived two days earlier, alongside other dignitaries including the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and King Juan Carlos of Spain. Today's 45 minute presentations were the end of a three-year journey for the bidding cities. Tokyo was knocked out in the second round of voting before the IOC voted again to decide between Rio and Madrid. Madrid's surprising success in reaching the final round came after the former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch made an unusual appeal for the Spanish capital, reminding the IOC members as he asked for their vote that at age 89 "I am very near the end of my time." The Brazilian president told delegates that Rio's bid was made on behalf of the whole of South America. "I honestly think it is Brazil's turn," he said. "It is South America's bid. Chicago and Tokyo were eliminated from the race to host the 2016 Summer Games, striking a blow to President Barack Obama, who supported the US bid. International Olympic Committee members are now voting to pick between Madrid and Rio de Janeiro, IOC President Jacques Rogge said in Copenhagen. The winner needs a majority from the 106 IOC members. Members with ties to a bid still in the running cant vote. Chicago brought in US President Barack Obama to support its bid, while Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva flew in to stress Rios main selling point: South America never has held the Games, which began in 1896. Juan Antonio Samaranch, the 89-year-old former IOC president, appealed to members to give the Games to Spain. Samaranch led the committee from 1980 to 2001.

Chicago has been eliminated from Olympic balloting in the first round of voting by the International Olympic Committee, a stunningly swift defeat for the US bid personally pitched by President Barack Obama. Minutes later, Tokyo also was eliminated. Rio de Janeiro and Madrid are now left seeking approval to host the 2016 Summer Games. The host city is to be announced around noon Chicago time. To some observers, it appeared that Chicago's bid had been fast gathering momentum in the last week. Daley and others began to show their confidence as one piece after another fell into place. From First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey's early commitments to travel with them to Copenhagen, to President Barack Obama's late decision to go, to bad news trickling out about the Rio's bid, indicators looked to be going Chicago's way. But members of the International Olympic Committee are known for being unpredictable, even impulsive, when they gather to pick a host city. And in 2016, it won't be Chicago.
