Hello people Here i have my 100ah battery which soon to be upgraded to 500ah as this battery is nuked and can only hold 30ah, its a standerd leisure battery so thay dont last many cycles at all. next is my 1.5Kw pure sign wave inverter, its a cheep one of ebay and impressed it hasent gone pop yet but im only using 20-30% of its rated capacity

Why a charge-controller is needed, and how the MX-60 works. Peak power tracking (PPT) is not explained, but it essentially uses a coil to convert higher voltage from the panels (which would otherwise be wasted, since the batteries always operate at 24 or 48 volts) into extra amperage (current). Usually, eg, 100 amps in at 80 volts (no-load voltage is 120) is converted into 130 amps at 53 volts. UL-1741 requires all inverters to "island" if the grid goes down or if the voltage is irregular (happens more often than you might think!). Battery Backup inverters island, just as grid-tie inverters, but they are able to go to the battery pack for power when the grid is cut off, even when the panels are not producing. These inverters are even "smart" enough to start a diesel genset, if it's attached; but no need to do so if you have enough batteries to last until the next sunny day.
What to do with an extra lawn mower? Make a generator of course! I've owned the donor lawn mower since new, and the engine is in excellent shape. I bought a new GM 94 amp alternator, a 2500w continuous /5000w peak inverter which turned out to be a bit oversized for this application, a pulley and a new deep cycle battery. Since putting it together in 2006, I've used it several times and it works great. I get about an hour of run time per tank with a moderate load, and when it gets too late I can shut the engine off and get about another hour of run time from the battery. The switch on the left is a NO momentary contact switch, the alternator doesn't start making power until you energize the field, that's what this switch does. The switch on the right is the on/off switch for the engine. While the engine is warming up, the speed will hunt around a little, but levels out when warmed up. The governer was set to an engine speed of 3750rpm, which gave the alternator a speed of 3375rpm, I didn't want to set the lawn mower engine speed too high and shorten its life span. Looking at an RPM/output chart for this alternator showed this rpm gave me approximately a 75amp output, which is about 1100 watts at 14.7 volts. That is why the inverter is oversized. I did try running a larger diameter pulley on the lawn mower but a large enough load would stall it. APC ES 350 u (2001 model) 200 watt 350 va ups with a huge battery upgrade. The stock 3.4 amp hour battery in my ups could only run my small office setup for a pathetic single minute. This did not work well for me, since my windows computer takes more than 1 min to shutdown (thanks to random updates and constant errors) and since I lost the usb data cord to communicate with the ups over 5 years ago. Typical replacement batteries for this unit ranged from $30 - $40 depending on where you buy them. Since these batteries were never designed to handle the type of load that a desktop computer throws at them, they usually breakdown within a year or so and so on. I decided after watching many youtube videos on solar setups and a few on people that also decided on a bigger ups battery, to do the same. I now have a ups that is capable of running my desktop for 7.5 hours if I deep cycle the battery or 4.5 hours if I leave 40% reserve. The battery I selected was a walmart brand everstart maxx 125 ah deep cycle battery, which is heavy but will save me money in the long run on replacement apc batteries. I expect this battery to last anywhere between 4-8 years before I have to replace it. Just some extras on the battery, it is capable of running 1500 watts for one hour, but the most I will probably ever pull out of it is 400 watts, via an external power inverter. I built this a Generator a couple of years ago, because we used to have alot of power outages, and I didn't like what I saw at Home-less Depot and Lowe's. Used it several times for power outages, our Ham Radio club's annual Field Day, and places where there is no AC. Although it puts out only 1800W, its battery-Inverter arrangement allows the gen-set to run in silent-mode (engine shut down). I have about 500Ah extra capacity I can add, so at 1kW load, I can run on batteries for about 6 hours (conservatively), and about 10 hrs at 500W load, before the engine need to be restarted to charge the batteries. I found the engine, alternator, inverter, and generator frame, all new, all on eBay. The Alternator, in case you didn't hear in the video (lots of noise) is a 140A OEM unit, and the engine is a Briggs & Stratton 6.0hp vertical-shaft, electric start. The inverter is a Xantrex Pro-Sine 1800 (12V input, hard-wired AC output), and the frame was from a Coleman 6500 generator. The wheels are pneumatic, and the steering mechanism turns via a brass fitting. The engine drives the alternator by a K-6, 6-rib serpentine belt. Engine pulley is 7.00" dia., and the alternator pulley is 5.00" dia., from an old Ford smog-pump. I am seeking suggestions for a official name for my creation.

For my thermodynamics project, I set the depicted components up to measure the total efficiency of charging batteries from the grid then discharging them through an inverter- in my case, 110v-24v-12v(wiring change)-110v-load. This is a small-scale model of a system that would serve a household wherein the grid power is only available for a few hours per day, or intermittently. Many areas in Africa are like this. My efficiency was about 60% total. I haven't yet measured individual component efficiencies yet using the DC powermeter, that is the test in progress while I took this video.

INTRODUCTION In my country, Nigeria, we do not have adequate power supply. The national grid supplies power to homes on the average of six hours per day. We do use petrol or diesel power generators as alternative to supplying power to homes. However, these fuels are expensive and is extremely difficult for an average income earner like me to burn daily for ten hours or above. Also, running this kind of generators generates noise and toxic fumes into the air and all these represent health hazards. As a way to curb these challenges namely: power outages, financial and health issues, I decided to install the battery and inverter system in my house to augment power supply for my domestic use. SYSTEM OVERVIEW Depending on the battery capacity and the inverter rating, the system can power air conditioners, electric iron, bulbs, electronic gadgets etc. For my installation as you can see in the video, I use it to power my electronic gadgets eg Television, Satellite television decoder and DVD Player. The red multimeter is displaying amps and the yellow multimeter is displaying volts of the battery pack. Here I was using 11 AA batteries. Using between 10 and 12 cells worked because those were the voltages in which the inverter would shutdown. The I got a total of at least 30 minutes of run time from one set of batteries. 8 of the cells were new 2500mah nimh cells and the others were 2000mah nimh. I tried to use 1000mah nicd cells, but the voltage would drop below 1 volt per cell. The larger capacity of nimh cells outweighed the higher "c" rate of the nicd cells in terms of over all output wattage of each cell. The highest power draw that I had seen was about 3.5 amps when playing Need for Speed. According to the computer, the power usage was between 15 watts and 30 watts. The inverter was a 400w black and decker model. The trick to the whole experiment was to make sure the laptop wasn't charging its internal battery, which would of made the power draw to be around 50-60 watts, way too much for AA batteries. I tried this once with an old compaq laptop by directly wiring the cells to the power port. This required about 30 cells, which meant some of the cell's voltages must have been near 0.
