The Kuemper Catholic High School boys golf team captured its Class 2A District title and a state berth Friday, May 21, with a commanding 27-shot team margin over its nearest rival at the Carroll Country Club. It is one of the best performances in the recent history of the Kuemper squad, if not the best, said Coach Larry Clark who has been with team since 1989. Ive never had anybody shoot 290, Clark said. With a score of 289 — which averages to 72.25 strokes for the top four players of the six whose cards are counted — Kuemper earned an opportunity to repeat as champion in what will be a fourth-straight appearance at the state tournament this Friday and Saturday — May 28 and 29 at Lake Panorama.

Clip 1: The 3out Double High Post morphs into a 4out Mid-Post formation. (See Flowing on the Read & React DVDs.) This is followed by a good example of the Post Passing Layer specifically the X-Cut. One small correction for the screener: when #21 Kachine sets the X-Cut screen, she should then cut to the basket for 4 reasons: •If the cutter off her screen is not open, then the post needs another passing option. •One of the premises of the Read & React is to always, with every action, apply pressure to the rim. Make the defense guard North-South as well as East-West; set the X-Cut Screen and then cut to the basket for a lay-up. •When Kachine vacates the spot, it initiates movement from the other two perimeter players (they must fill the open spots). •If the shot is missed, Kachine will be inside to rebound. Clip 2: Pass & Cut leads to Drive-an-Open-Gap which forces the post defender to help across the lane. This Drive-the-Middle-Above-the-Post action followed by the dish to the post player sliding down is identical to the Basic Post Slide drills that build the basic layers of the Read & React. Clip 3: 4out flows to 5out when the Post Player, #12 Morgan, sets a back-screen for the cutter (although not a very good one), and then shapes up for the jumper. Clip 4: The High Post provides a screen for the cutter, who changes her cut in order to hang her defender on the screen. (Kinda looks like Coach Woodens UCLA High Post action, doesnt it?) Instead, its just an unplanned ...

Clip 1 - 4out High Post to 3out - middle drive Clip 2 - 4out to 5out - The shot is missed, but then, what coach among us can control whether the ball goes in or not? Im interested in the mix of Pass & Cut + Circle Reverse + Baseline Drive Natural Pitch; 3 Layers with an extra pass added. Clip 3 - 5out to 4out - using Pass & Cut to hunt for a drive opposite the direction of the cutters. The penetrator uses a cutter as a brush screen. Clip 4 - 5out - When defense doesnt help, the penetrator finishes with a lay-up. Check out the spacing thats why it works. Clip 5 - 5out - This looks the same as the previous clip, but the penetrator chooses to drive on the side where only one defender could help no help = lay-up. Clip 6 - 5out - Speed Dribble, Pass & Cut; using the Read Line, Penetrate & Pitch just a good mix of 3 or 4 layers of the Read & React. Clip 7 - 4out - Great Front Cut right down the middle of the lane. The Read & React is so simple: Simplicity allows players to be Decisive and Aggressive. That is the perfect description of the Read & React and why its so powerful. Clip 8 - 4out High Post Feed the Post layer - This illustrates the versatility of the Read & React. I like how the post player sees the screening opportunity after the pass. Clip 9 - A flare screen to start the action good hunting, but nothing available the guard uses the Power Back dribble to call for a sprint ball screen no defender bites on the penetration, so she pulls up for the jumper.
Kuemper Catholic High School advanced to state tonight in boys basketball under coach Tyler Edwards. This video incluces key plays and interviews dealing with the fourth quarter in the Knights 52-50 win over Emmetsburg at Fort Dodge Senior High School. Andrew Schleisman hit a shot with second remaining to put Kuemper up 51-49. He is interviewed about that play. Prior to that the Knights David Hicks puts KCHS up 49-48 on two clutch free throws with 15 seconds left in the game. The Knights outrebounded the E-Hawks and forced more turnovers during the game. See Monday's (March 1, 2010) Carroll Daily Times Herald for full coverage of this win, sending the Knights to the state tourney on the 25th anniversary of the school's epic state title win.

Anyone who had the opportunity to watch my sister, Hali Sheriff, perform gymnastics in the 1960s would never forget her. At age 14 she was arguably the best female gymnast in the world. Competing for the Blue Mound Gymnastics Club in Blue Mound, Illinois, under the instruction of our mother, Ginny Sheriff, Hali rarely lost an event in competition. In those meets she frequently scored 10s, winning each event and the subsequent all around title. This phenomenon occurred years before Olga and Nadia brought the perfect 10 score to the attention of the world. Her artistry was without parallel, and her difficulty was superior to the Olympic standard of the day. Whenever Hali performed, the entire competition would stop, enabling all the judges to watch and admire her amazing talent. As I watched her routine, I recall the only sound which could be heard was the click click click of the super 8 mm cameras, followed by the deafening roar of applause. In daily training and competitions it was obvious that her love for gymnastics was an extension of her joyous personality and tireless personal dedication. On a European tour, with George Nissen, in 1966 she and our mother were presented a silver plate with the following inscription: Mrs. Sheriff Coach / English Gymnastic Tour / February March 1966 / Thanks for bringing us Hali / The finest womens gymnast we have ever seen. Had she competed in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, she would have rewritten the history of Gymnastics. Alas ...

The first football game in Parkersburg since the fatal shooting of coach Ed Thomas brought a rush of excitement and emotions to the small Iowa town. Ed Thomas d Thomas July 17, 1950 June 24, 2009 was the high school football coach for Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, Iowa. On June 24, 2009, Thomas was shot allegedly by a former studen at the football team's weight room. Thomas was airlifted to a Waterloo, Iowa hospital where he was pronounced dead. Thomas had coached 37 years of Aplington-Parkersburg Falcon football and won two state titles and a total of 292 games. He is credited with having coached four current NFL players, which is the most per capita of any high school in the nation. In 2005, Thomas won the prestigious NFL High School Coach of the Year award. The night of his death, 2500 mourners gathered for a candle light vigil. He was featured on the July 6, 2009 cover of Sports Illustrated. On August 28, 2009 Iowa's Aplington-Parkersburg High played its first game since coach Ed Thomas' shooting death in June. The Falcons 22-0 at halftime. The Falcons beat Dike-New Hartford 30-14. ESPN televised the game. On Friday, a national television audience watched on ESPN as Thomas's team returned to the field that now bears his name. After nearly 10 months of trying to forgive him, Ed Thomas' sons finally addressed Mark Becker directly on Wednesday, asking him to take responsibility for gunning down their father, a renowned high school football coach ...

Here's some video I shot of the Midwest Central Railroad's special train operated on July 4th, 2009 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, during the town's Independence Day festivities. The train consisted of Shay locomotive #9, three coach cars, and two cabooses, and operated from 4 to about 7:45 PM. This was the first time I ever attended this event, and it is very different compared to Old Threshers. A lot of the shot's you'll see of the train are taken from places that are usually blocked by cars, tractors, etc. during the Reunion. The sky wasn't very pretty and it threatened to rain, but the Shay put on quite a show and everyone had a great time anyway. At 9:30 the same evening, Mount Pleasant fire fighters put on an awesome firework show at the grandstands on the grounds.

tinyurl.com The Department of Criminal Investigation says the man who shot and killed Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas, was a former student and football player of Thomas'. Twenty-four-year-old Mark Becker has been charged with first degree murder in Thomas' death. Fifty-eight-year-old Thomas, and several student-athletes, was taking part in an early-morning weight lifting session at the school when Becker entered the facility around 7:45 am and shot Thomas several times with a handgun. Authorities say none of the students were threatened by Becker and he left the building. A 911 call was placed and when medical personal arrived they transferred Thomas to a Waterloo hospital. He died a short time later. Authorities say Mark Becker was taken into custody at a residence in rural Parkersburg shortly after the shooting. He was cooperative with authorities and is being held in the Butler County Jail. The Parkersburg Police Department, Butler County Sheriff's Office, the DCI and the Iowa State Patrol all responded to the shooting and are involved in the investigation. Kevin Wimker with the DCI refused to speculate on Becker's motive for the shooting. A news release from the Cedar Falls Police Department shows charges are pending against Mark Becker after a June 20th incident involving vandalism and a high speed chase. After Becker was taken into custody in that case, he was transferred to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Cedar Falls Police planned to ...
