Guardian Real IRA story reopens debate on 'oxygen of publicity' Henry McDonald explains why it was important to speak directly to the small dissident group Comments (8) Remember Margaret Thatcher's desire to starve terrorists of the "oxygen of publicity"? The former prime minister's remark was a precursor to the Tories' broadcasting ban in the late 1980s that prevented supporters of the Provisional IRA in Sinn Féin -- or indeed loyalists -- from talking freely on the UK's airwaves. The thinking behind this prohibition was that terrorist groups were exploiting the broadcasters, that the enemies of democracy were subverting the system by harnessing a key tenet of democracy -- a free, open media. Of course the ban led to surreal outcomes such as actors' voices replacing the actual voices of Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness and other key players in the Northern Irish politico-paramilitary world. At its most extreme the ban's absurdity was exposed on the BBC comedy mock-news show The Day Today when Steve Coogan, playing a Sinn Féin spokesman, sucked in helium before an interview in order "to subtract credibility from his statements". In the aftermath of the Guardian's story on the Real IRA today and the dissident group's bellicose warning to bankers and the banking system, the "oxygen of publicity" argument was resurrected once more. A reviewer, in fact a favourable one, perusing our story on Sky News late on Tuesday evening, raised the possibility that the report could give the ...
Banks and bankers are now potential targets for the Real IRA, leaders of the dissident Irish republican terrorist group have warned. Despite having only 100 activists, the group also said that targets in Britain remained a high priority. In an attempt to tap into the intense hostility towards the banks on both sides of the Irish border, the Real IRA leaders branded bankers as ''criminals'' and said: ''We have a track record of attacking high-profile economic targets and financial institutions such as the City of London. The role of bankers and the institutions they serve in financing Britain's colonial and capitalist system has not gone unnoticed. ''Let's not forget that the bankers are the next-door neighbours of the politicians. Most people can see the picture: the bankers grease the politicians' palms, the politicians bail out the bankers with public funds, the bankers pay themselves fat bonuses and [lend] the money back to the public with interest.'' However, security sources in Northern Ireland said the Real IRA lacked the logistical resources of the Provisional IRA to prosecute a bombing campaign similar to the one that devastated the City of London financial district in the early 1990s. The group stressed in a series of written answers to questions from The Guardian that future attacks would alternate between ''military, political and economic targets''. It is the first time the Real IRA has engaged in such open anti-capitalist rhetoric or focused on the role of ...
The english propaganda would have the world believe that the IRA are nothing but terrorist. The real truth is that the IRA were formed as a defence to terrorism. The IRA is an army which consists of brave men and women (many from local neighbourhoods ) who decided to defend their country from british dictators who invaded Ireland. The english committed murder and genocide against the Irish catholics during their occupation of Ireland and then tried to cover up their Hitler like actions by outlawing the IRA to the rest of the world.. It still goes on today and yet the rest of the world turn away...

hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk Was the ANC a terrorist organisation, pure and simple? It is a complicated question. Acts of inexcusable terror were carried out against innocent people in the name of, and by the ANC and its 'military wing, 'Spear of the Nation.' During the bombing campaign of the 1980s many civilians, black as well as white, were killed. Wimpy Bars were a favourite target. But while I don't think it true that 'one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter', I do think there are circumstances where the resort to violence can be justified. An obvious example of this is the French Resistance against the National Socialist German occupation, and similar groups elsewhere under Hitlers rule. There was absolutely no lawful means of protest or reform. Terrorism, in my view, is the deliberate choice of violent methods when some other legitimate redress is available. All roads to constitutional change in South Africa had been closed by the early 1960s. On the other hand, it was not a wholly closed society. It had a partly free press, and a small but courageous parliamentary opposition. The courts, when given the chance to uphold the law, often did so. The ANC consciously chose not to follow the successful example of the Indian Congress, of non-violent civil disobedience. Who knows if this would have been more effective? Terrorism also usually involves the deliberate murder or intimidation of non-violent political figures who are seen as rivals by the ...

I am northern Irish and I made a tribute to saint pattys day. Although it happened yesterday I could only upload it today. I hope you enjoy it. The movie trailer I included is THE WIND THAT SHAKES BARLEY its about the Real and Good IRA in the 1920's who fought for Independence from England and got it. Its a excellent film. But it not about the 1980's fake and new IRA who is a terrorist group who kill innocent English people and Northern Irish people in the North. On Saint Patrick's day everyone can be Irish and have some Guinness Here are some cool facts you didn't know about Saint Patricks Day: * St. Patrick wasn't Irish(Born in England) * St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. * The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City. * There are 36.5 million US residents with Irish roots. This number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself (more than four million). * More than 100 St. Patrick's Day parades are held across the United States. New York City and Boston are home to the largest celebrations. * At the annual New York City St. Patrick's Day parade, participants march up 5th Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street. More than 150000 people take part in the event, which does not allow automobiles or floats. * Chicago is famous for a somewhat peculiar annual ...

A new ceasefire was finally announced in July 1997. The future of the IRA's weaponry was been one of the dominant and ...
