A trip through Laos from the north to the south is almost like following the Mekong River. We made such a trip in February - March 2006. Places visited amongst others are Ban Xiang Kok, Muang Sing, Luang Prabang, Phonsavan, Vang Vieng, Vientiane, Hinboun, Savannakhet, Champasak, Wat Phu, Don Khon. This trip was organized by Sawadee Travel Organisation in the Netherlands and we were amongst the participants.
The presence of shy Irrawaddy Dolphins is a symbol that all is well with the Chilika lagoon.

This lake is fed by sweet water as well as gets sea water.Lots of migratory birds flock this lake The Irrawaddy Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is the flagship species of Chilika lake. Chilka is home to the only known population of Irrawaddy dolphins in India [31] and one of only two lagoons in the world that are home to this species. [29] It is classified as Critically Endangered, in five of the six other places it is known to live. [32]

In the last two and a half years, we've never mentioned fresh-water dolphins - that doesn't mean we haven't been trying to find them. Scouring the rivers of eastern India for Gangetic dolphins and Myanmar for Irrawaddy dolphins, we've been looking and looking and looking. No luck. It turns out that our lucky river was the Mekong. At long last, we've finally found them in Kratie, Cambodia. And when the luck came, it really came. Most people searching for fresh water dolphins are lucky to see a quick flash of dorsal fin or flipper. We, on the other hand, had tails, flippers, fins and the occasional head splashing and bobbing around us as somewhere between 9 and 12 dolphins encircled our boat.
Chilka the largest brackish water lagoon of Asia is one of the famous winter resort of Siberian and Himalayan birds, but it has also got the pride to be the largest habitat of Irrawaddy dolphin, says Chief Executive of Chilka Development Authority Dr Ajit Patnaik.

The sickening truth is that dolphins do engage in very unsavory activities that we once believed were reserved for only humans and baboons. I wish it weren't true. The question now is, does this change your attitude about dolphins? It really shouldn't, but you should be aware that not all dolphins are nice or the same. When you step into a pool with a dolphin there's a chance it's a psychopathic one that will jump and bite a hole right in your neck. So please heed this warning, stop ...
