IRS issues new guidelines on obtaining home buyer tax credits The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently issued new guidelines and clarified documentation that taxpayers must submit to successfully obtain the federal tax credit for home buyers. KEEP THIS IN MIND • The federal tax credit for home buyers was extended and expanded late last year. Qualified first-time buyers may be eligible to receive a tax credit of up to $8000 on homes purchased before April 30, 2010. Repeat buyers may be eligible for a tax credit of up to $6500. we've all heard of people cheating on their taxes---but tonight we look at one investigation that really got our attention. it wasn't how much he's accused of stealing--- it's what he was writing down as his occupation. jeremy jojola went to silver city today to bring us the story. he's a silver city man----now under the thumb of the irs. for three years, a search warrant says he swindled uncle sam out of 543- thousand dollars by claiming to be a gigalo and a pleasure contractor. in silver city---one local man managed to strike it rich with stolen names and tax software according to this federal search warrant executed by irs agents. we aren't releasng his name or showing his face because he hasn't been officially charged.... the apparent scheme is simple---- from his mobile home----he created fake tax returns by using names of people he knew--and filed 89 bogus returns electronically with a computer, according to the paper work. the irs caught wind of the scheme when it's computers flagged the returns because many of them had the same address and were filed under the same email account. not only that---the silver city man apparently created bogus job titles within the fake returns---like "gigolo," "poser," and "pleasure contractor." court documents say each return generated thousands in refunds that were apparently deposited into the man's bank account. a warrant says he bilked the irs out of $543374.03, between 2006 and 2008. we went looking for the man for his side of ...

Millions of Americans who expected slight tax breaks courtesy of this year's stimulus could soon discover they actually owe money to the federal government. The Making Work Pay tax credit, offered as a wage advance, may have been incorrectly administered to more than 15.4 million workers, according to a report released Monday morning by the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration. Consequently, a large swath of recipients could find themselves forced to return portions of their Making Work Pay credit, and others could discover they owe tax penalties, the Treasury's inspector general warned. The Making Work Pay credit, which eligible workers began receiving in April, offers up to $400 to individuals and $800 to couples in order to encourage spending and stimulate economic growth. It was a staple part of President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign platform. What makes the refundable credit particularly unique — albeit difficult for the IRS to implement — is its method of payment: The money was advanced to taxpayers throughout the year, but workers were required to claim it only much later on their tax returns, according to the report. Ultimately, that means some Americans who otherwise would not have been eligible for their allotments of money — including workers with two jobs or those who receive Social Security benefits on top of their weekly wages — still received a share of the total billion-dollar tax credit, the inspector general found.
