A boat carrying Jewish activists attempting to reach blockaded Gaza was forced to divert to the port of Ashdod in Israel by ten Israeli warships. Among those on the aid boat is a Holocaust survivor and an Israeli man who lost his daughter in a Palestinian suicide bombing. Richard Cooper spoke to those on board about how the ship was made to change course.
Israel has launched its own investigation into the deadly raid on an aid ship flotilla bound for Gaza that occured two weeks ago. The probe has been set up after the Jewish state rejected an international inquiry proposed by the UN.
People all over the world have protested against Israel's attack on an aid-carrying convoy bound for Gaza that left several pro-Palestinian activists on board dead and many more injured. The Freedom Flotilla, a convoy of six ships carrying hundreds of activists, political leaders and journalists from around the world, was trying to deliver about 10000 tonnes of basic aid including food, medicines, and construction material, in an attempt to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza. While Israel has said activists with bats and knives were the first to attack the gun-wielding troops when they boarded the ship, the flotilla's organisers said that Israeli forces were the ones to open fire first. Nonetheless, there is a unanimous agreement across the world that the assault was unjustly disproportionate. Ban Ki-moon, the UN chief, has said he is "shocked by reports of killings and injuries" and has called for a full investigation into the incident. Several countries have called for urgent meetings on Israel's lethal use of force. Strong condemnation is growing around the world after the Israeli military attacked a flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. Meanwhile Israel claims IDF troops stormed the ship which had weapons on board. Wisam Ahmad, a spokesman for the Al-Haq human rights organisation says Israeli forces will do anything to distract international attention from the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
Video taken by IDF naval boat shows the passengers of the Mavi Marmara, one of the ships in the 'Free Gaza' Flotilla, violently attacking IDF soldiers who were trying to board the ship after having sent repeated requests for the boat to change course. Large groups of passengers surrounded soldiers and beat them with metal poles and chairs, and threw one soldier over the side of the ship. Some passengers grabbed pistols from the IDF soldiers and opened fire. As a result of the attacks, seven IDF soldiers were injured, and nine of the passengers were killed. The 'Free Gaza' Flotilla had publicly insisted on their non-violent intentions, however their violent attack on the IDF soldiers was clearly premeditated. They had knives, metal rods, firebombs and other items ready to use.
