(May 12) -- FBI officials in Jacksonville, Fla., say they have found the remnants of a pipe bomb used in a possible hate crime at a mosque during evening prayers. Along with local police, the FBI launched an investigation after an explosion shook the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida at 9:35 pm Monday, when approximately 60 people were inside praying. No one was injured. "They heard a loud explosion and went out an emergency exit in the back," Muhammad Mansoori, a Jacksonville resident who worships at the mosque, told AOL News. "There was a fire, and a wall where the bomb was left was blackened. Otherwise, the building is sturdy, no real damage." Mansoori said the Muslim population in Jacksonville totals around 5000 families and that most who practice the religion do so at the Islamic Center mosque. The Council on American-Islamic Relations held press conferences in Miami and Tampa today, and announced a $5000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person who planted the bomb. "This incident comes after a man was seen barging into the mosque on April 4, shouting anti-Muslim slurs and threatening to come back later," Ibrahim Hooper, the council's communication director, told AOL News. "We're not sure if he is involved with this latest attack." The FBI has released surveillance video taken at the mosque that shows a potential suspect walking in the area where the bomb exploded and close to the time the blast occurred.
ALATKA, Fla. -- A plea deal could put missing 7 year-old, Haleigh Cummings' father behind bars for 15 years. He was arrested on drug trafficking charges in January. Ronald Cummings lawyer tells Action News he was all set to accept a plea deal Thursday morning inside the Putnam County Courthouse. It's a deal that would have put him behind bars for 15 years. The deal didn't happen. Ronald's Lawyer, Terry Shoemaker, says Ronald sat down with Putnam County investigators Wednesday to discuss the case against him. He's charged with 5 counts of carrying and dealing prescription medications. The reason the plea deal didn't happen is because Ronald's lawyer says there's more to be discussed in the case. Shoemaker says he had hoped the deal would have been done today, but says it should be completed in the next week or so. The deal would include the state dropping the two largest charges against Ronald, 15 years in prison, and Ronald would have to cooperate fully with investigators. Ronald, his cousin, his ex-wife Misty, her brother, and another woman were all arrested more than four months ago in an undercover sting. Ronald's cousin, Hope Sykes, has already been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Without a plea deal, Ronald and Misty both face a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison.
PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman with ties to the family of Haleigh Cummings will stay behind bars. Hope Sykes was sentenced in Putnam County today. She cried and told the judge she is done with the drugs and is now a changed person. Sykes was arrested in January on drug trafficking charges. She pled no contest to the one charge of trafficking hydrocodone. A judge sentenced her to 15 years in prison. She will also have to pay thousands of dollars in court fees. Sykes is Ronald Cummings' cous

MAYOR JOHN PEYTON JACKSONVILLE FOUNDATION FOR RECOVERY PLAN - BREAKING NEWS 01-20-2010 Part 3 - americas logistics center - waterways st johns river, river walk Port Speaking of playing to our strengths, thanks to our Port Authority, Jacksonville is poised to become a leader in international trade in the post-Panamax era. It is clear that these opportunities are the most viable way to expand our local economy. Just last Friday the city, the port and private logistics companies met together to begin developing the latest public policy strategies related to securing federal dollars for dredging, highway projects/rail projects to improve connectivity at the port. In addition, the state has already recognized that our seaport is unique among Floridas 14 ports. I look forward to working with our state delegation to leverage this distinction into more state dollars for Jacksonville. These capital projects will position the port for long-term growth in the post-Panamax era and help solidify Jacksonvilles reputation as Americas Logistics Center. While the growth of our port is important to the health of our local economy, it should not come at the expense of our river and other natural resources. The port, the regulatory authorities, our environmental community and my office share in that common goal and understand the importance a healthy river. We are committed to keeping that balance in mind and continuing to move forward as a top tier import and export city. River Quality ...
MAYOR JOHN PEYTON JACKSONVILLE FOUNDATION FOR RECOVERY PLAN - BREAKING NEWS 01-20-2010 Part2 The circumstances are challenging. The economists are touting the end of the recession. But from where I sit, its difficult to believe. Our unemployment rate hovers around 11 percent and our foreclosures are still among the highest in the nation. As mayor, I cant sit idly by. It is my job to help lay the foundation for Jacksonvilles strong post-recession recovery, by creating new job opportunities and a stronger financial foundation, improving our citys quality of life and ensuring the safety of our citizens. By overcoming our obstacles and exploiting our opportunities we can position Jacksonville for a strong post-recession recovery more quickly than the peer cities we compare ourselves to and compete with. Economic Successes I know there are a number of current and former JEDC officials here, and I appreciate the diligence with which you pursue great economic opportunities and job creation in our city. I also see the leadership of our chamber here. We have the finest chamber in the country and we could not have a better marketing arm for our city. Over the past 6½ years, weve made great strides in the area of economic development, thanks to the solid foundation we have in place. I am heartened by recent reports that Jacksonville added back more than 2000 jobs in the 4th quarter of last year. While our job growth has defied gravity, we must do more. We will succeed by continuing ...
MAYOR JOHN PEYTON JACKSONVILLE FOUNDATION FOR RECOVERY PLAN - BREAKING NEWS 01-20-2010. FOUNDATION FOR JACKSONVILLES RECOVERY Mayor John Peyton Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 Good afternoon. Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet here at what is arguably one of our citys most beautiful and poignant landmarks Snyder Memorial Church. I see a number of council members here and I am grateful for your presence. It is your partnership with the mayors office and the people of this community that makes great things happen in our city. Between these stone walls there is more than a century of stories about a city that consistently rises above adversity to forge a greater path for its future. Thats what Jacksonville is known for and this church is a tribute to that fortitude in so many ways. You know the story of the Great Fire well. The original church, founded in 1870, was destroyed in 1901, but rebuilt a year later by the parishioners and other members of our community. Today, it is a tribute to the craftsmen that rebuilt Jacksonville and a testimonial to the determination and focus of the people of Jacksonville. Sixty years later, it was the people of this church a traditionally white church who helped usher in a new Jacksonville and a new attitude toward community stewardship. When groups of young black men were attacked in the park, this church served as a place of refuge. They took a stand against great injustices and brought Jacksonville out of some of ...
