"Muslim leaders agree, death penalty for gays. Twice in one week, Muslims in positions of influence agreed that Islam has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to homosexuality, and that gays should be killed (Ellen DeGeneres, Barney Frank -- that includes you even if you remain silent) First, Vanderbilt (Tennessee) University's Muslim chaplain, from WND: I go with what Islam teaches," said Awadh A. Binhazim, who is listed on the Vanderbilt website as "Adjunct Professor of Islam at the Divinity School" and an adviser to the Muslim Student Association. His comments came earlier this week at a diversity event for students. He was asked directly, "Under Islamic law is it punishable by death if you are a homosexual?" Binhazim said, "Yes. It is punishable by death." Vanderbilt University chose not to admonish the Muslim chaplain who, although not paid, clearly represents and is approved by the school. Rather they defended the comments as staunch advocates of free speech. We expect, in the very near future, that Vanderbilt will openly welcome Wafa Sultan, Geert Wilders, Nonie Darwish and others who speak about Islamic sharia law. Vanderbilt is committed to free speech. It is equally committed to a policy of non-discrimination on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, national origin or sexuality. There has been some confusion as to Binhazim's role at Vanderbilt. He is the Muslim chaplain at Vanderbilt, a volunteer position. He is not a professor of Islam and is not associated ...

Roy Shirley also known as King Roy Shirley and The High Priest (born Ainsworth Roy Rushton Shirley, July 18, 1944, Kingston, Jamaica, died July 2008) was a Jamaican singer whose career spanned the ska, rocksteady and reggae eras, and whose "Hold Them" is a contender for the first ever rocksteady song. He was also one of the original members of The Uniques. Shirley was born on July 18, 1944 and grew up in Trench Town, and began his career performing in talent contests. After early recordings for producer Simeon L. Smith went unreleased, he moved on to work with Leslie Kong, who released his debut single "Oh Shirley", co-arranged with his friend Jimmy Cliff, giving him a hit in 1965. Shirley then formed The Leaders along with Ken Boothe, Joe White, and Chuck Josephs. This group was unsuccessful, but Shirley went on to join Slim Smith and Franklyn White in the original line-up of The Uniques. When this line-up folded, Shirley recorded "Hold Them" in 1966. The song became a massive hit in Jamaica, and Shirley recorded several more singles for Gibbs, including "Dance The Arena", "The World Needs Love", and "Music Is The Key", but these failed to match the success of the first single. Shirley moved on to work with Bunny Lee giving the producer his first hit with "Music Field", which was followed by others such as "Get on the Ball". He became renowned for his ecstatic stage performances, often performing wearing a long silver cape with a high collar and was described by the ...

POLICE are reporting that the capital is currently 'much calmer' following yesterday's outbreak of violence when gunmen attempted to prevent the arrest of reputed Tivoli Gardens don Christopher 'Dudus' Coke. However, up until now, gunshots are still being heard on Red Hills Road in St Andrew nearby St Richards Primary School. There were incidents of looting in the commercial district of downtown during the evening while light was cut off in certain affected areas by the Jamaica Public Service Company. "There was some shootings last night but some amount of calm has returned," a spokesman for the Constabulary Communication Network told the Observer moments ago. In one incident late yesterday evening two policeman were killed and six injured after they came to the aid of a female motorist. She had turned up at Rockfort Police Station to report that she was shot and injured at the intersection of Mountain View Avenue and Deanery Road, St Andrew and that another motorist had been attacked at the same location. The cops became stranded on the grounds of nearby Excelsior High School after being penned in by gunmen. The six injured cops were among those that came to rescue them. After the situation was brought under control and the injured policemen were taken to hospital where the two died. Two policemen have been discharged while four remain hospitalised in stable condition. The cops were attached to the Motorised Division and Kingston East Division. Police said that certain ...

Winston Holness, better known as Niney the Observer (born George Boswell, 1951, Montego Bay), is a Jamaican record producer and singer who was a key figure in the creation of many classic reggae recordings dating from the 1970s and early 1980s. Holness gained his nickname "Niney" after losing a thumb in a workshop accident. In the latter half of the 1960s he worked as an engineer at KG records, where he began producing. His first release was his own composition "Come on Baby" issued on his Destroyer label. He moved on to work with Bunny Lee in 1967, then for Lynford Anderson's studio, then working for Joe Gibbs as chief sound engineer, replacing his friend Lee "Scratch" Perry. While working for Gibbs he produced Dennis Alcapone and Lizzy's "Mr. Brown", and played a major role in launching the career of Dennis Brown. After leaving Gibbs' setup, his first major success as a producer was "Blood & Fire" in December 1970, initially released in a pressing of 200 on his Destroyer label, but reissued the following year on his Observer label, and going on to sell over 30000 copies in Jamaica. Inspired by Perry's nickname of "The Upsetter", Holness adopted "The Observer", using the name for his new Observer label, and the name of his house band, The Observers (actually the Soul Syndicate). Several singles followed, some reusing the "Blood & Fire" rhythm, including Big Youth's "Fire Bunn". In the early 1970s, Holness became one of Jamaica's most sought after producers, with the likes ...

Sister Nancy, aka Muma Nancy, real name Ophlin Russell-Myers, (born Ophlin Russell, 2 January 1962, Kingston, Jamaica) is a dancehall DJ and singer. She is known to the world as the first female dancehall DJ and was described as being a "dominating female voice for over two decades" on the dancehall scene. One of her most famous songs is "Bam Bam", labeled as a "well-known reggae anthem" by BBC and a "classic" by The Observer. Russell-Myers was one of 15 siblings.[4] Her brother, Robert, is better known as Brigadier Jerry, and by her mid-teens, she would occasionally perform on the Jahlove Music sound system that he worked with.[4] In 1980, producer Winston Riley was the first to take her into the studio, resulting in her first single, "Papa Dean" for his Techniques label. Russell-Myers went on to perform at Reggae Sunsplash, making her the first female deejay ever to perform there, and she is also the first female Jamaican deejay to tour internationally. She had further success with singles such as "One Two", "Money Can't Buy Me Love", "Transport Connection" and "Bam Bam". Her debut album, One Two was released in 1982. She went on to work with producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes, recording "A No Any Man Can Test Sister Nancy", "Bang Belly", and a collaboration with Yellowman, "Jah Mek Us Fe A Purpose".She continued to appear live, sometimes on Jahlove Music with her brother. The sound system toured internationally, with both Sister Nancy and Brigadier Jerry making their debut ...
