When the commercial whaling moratorium was introduced by the IWC in 1982, Japan lodged an official objection. However, in response to US threats to cut Japan's fishing quota in US territorial waters under the terms of the Packwood-Magnuson Amendment, Japan withdrew its objection in 1987. However, according to the BBC, America went back on this promise, effectively destroying the deal.[15] Since Japan could not resume commercial whaling, it began whaling on a scientific-research basis. Australia, Greenpeace, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and other groups dispute the Japanese claim of research "as a disguise for commercial whaling, which is banned."[16][17] The stated purpose of the research program is to establish the size and dynamics of whale populations. The Japanese government wishes to resume whaling in a sustainable manner under the oversight of the IWC, both for whale products (meat etc.) and to help preserve fishing resources by culling whales. Anti-whaling organizations claim that the research program is a front for commercial whaling, that the sample size is needlessly large and that equivalent information can be obtained by non-lethal means, for example by studying samples of whale tissue (such as skin) or faeces.[citation needed] The Japanese government sponsored Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), which conducts the research, disagrees, stating that the information obtainable from tissue and/or feces samples is insufficient and that the sample size ...
Sea Shepherd Update: Bob Barker Continues Pursuit of Japanese Whaling Fleet After 18 days of chasing and preventing the illegal Japanese whaling fleet from killing any whales, the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin broke off to return to Hobart, Tasmania. They are scheduled to arrive on March 6th. We have reached our limit on fuel reserves, said Captain Paul Watson, We have no choice but to return. We have just enough fuel to get home. With the Steve Irwin dropping out of the chase, the Japanese whaling fleet still has a problem. The Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker has sufficient fuel to continue chasing the whaling fleet for most of the remaining days in the season. The Bob Barker is presently pursuing the Nisshin Maru through ice packs heading into the Cooperation Sea. Sea Shepherd is assuming that the three harpoon vessels of the fleet are waiting to the South for the factory ship to rejoin them. Each day we prevent the killing of a whale is a victory for us, said Captain Chuck Swift of the Bob Barker, My crew are committed to staying down here as long as possible to block their illegal whaling operations. They dont have much time left and with that time left, they will see the Bob Barker on their tail defending the whales. The Institute for Cetacean Research in Japan is reporting that Togo has stripped the Bob Barker of the Togo flag. If it is true, then it is interesting that Japan has been informed but Sea Shepherd has not. That indicates that Japan put pressure on Togo to ...
Japan's foreign minister said he is disappointed with Australia's threat to take his country to court over its Antarctic whale hunts, and Australia vowed to approach the International Whaling Commission as soon as possible. The comments from Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada follow two days of talks with officials in Australia over Tokyo's research whaling program, which kills hundreds of whales a year in Antarctic waters. The talks come amid an increasingly aggressive fight between the Japanese whaling fleet and US-based activist group Sea Shepherd, which pursues the whalers each year in an attempt to thwart the hunt. In January, a Japanese whaler struck Sea Shepherd's high-tech speedboat Ady Gil, which sank a day later. Earlier this month, Sea Shepherd's ship the Bob Barker and a Japanese harpoon boat collided, causing minor damage to both vessels. The day before Okada's arrival, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Australia would take international legal action against Japan if the program was not stopped by November. Okada said Tokyo will defend its hunt in any legal forum, saying it is an allowed exception to the International Whaling Commission's 1986 ban on commercial whaling. "The position of Australia and Japan on the whaling issue is different but we are in agreement that we should continue with objective and constructive discussions with a view to a diplomatic solution in the International Whaling Commission and between the two nations." "Should action become ...
February 19, 2010, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd bluntly tells Japan to commit to stop whaling or face international court action this year, a day before a visit by Japan's Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada. Rudd said Australia had collected video and photographic evidence about Japan's annual Antarctic hunting expeditions, threatening to take its major trading ally to court before the next whaling season. He told the Channel 7 TV station that Australia would "work with the Japanese to reduce, through negotiation, their current catch to zero". "If that fails -- and I'm saying this very bluntly and very clearly on your programme today -- if that fails, then we will initiate that court action before the commencement of the whaling season in November 2010." Australia and New Zealand have consistently opposed Japan's killing of hundreds of whales each year via a loophole in an international moratorium that allows "lethal research".
February 15, 2010, Shepherd Captain Peter Bethune of the vessel Ady Gil, which was sunk by the Japanese security ship Shonan Maru 2, boarded the whaling ship to conduct a citizens arrest of the skipper of the Shonan Maru 2. Captain Bethune calmly knocked on the bridge wing door, entered the wheelhouse, and presented himself to the Captain of Shonan Maru 2 where he informed the skipper that he was under arrest for the sinking of the Sea Shepherd ship Ady Gil on January 6th, 2010. Australian Greens leader Bob Brown says he supports Mr Bethune's actions. "[I respect] his courage, his devotion to the whales and his simple fearlessness in going aboard the very ship that just a couple of weeks ago rammed his own ship and sank it, at risk to the lives of all six of his crew members," Senator Brown said.
New Zealander Pete Bethune has boarded a Japanese whaling ship under cover of darkness and attempted to arrest the captain for the attempted murder of the Ady Gil crew. He also presented the captain with a bill of $4.3 million for the destruction of his vessel. Anti whaling campaigners from the Sea shepherd called it mission impossible. Captain Paul Watson, of the Sea Shepherd Steve Irvin, says the mission was extremely dangerous. He took a jet ski in the dead of night and boarded a vessel moving at 15 knots through the water - a vessel surrounded by spikes and nets, he says. Mr Bethune was on board the Shonan Maru 2 for 90 minutes before he attempted a citizen's arrest of the captain, for what he calls the attempted murder of his crew when their vessels collided. Mr Bethune's Ady Gil later sank, and today he also presented a bill for $4.3 million to replace it. Mr Watson says the mission intended to highlight the hypocrisy surrounding the law. What we're trying to do here is to send a message to the New Zealand Government to represent the interest of a New Zealand captain and a New Zealand vessel, he says. Because I can tell you right now that if we had had sunk a Japanese vessel we would now be under arrest by the Australian navy. Mr Bethune was in contact with the Steve Irwin but his radio has been confiscated. Now he wants to be delivered to New Zealand. Steve Irwins first officer Locky MacLean says the Japanese vessel should return Mr Bethune home. There is a loose ...

Sea Shepherd founder, Captain Paul Watson, said the Japanese harpoon ship rammed the conservationists' ship the Bob Barker and tore a 90cm gash in the hull above the water line. The incident happened about 300 kilometres off Cape Darnley, in the Australian Antarctic Territory, about 3pm (AEDT) yesterday. No-one was injured in the incident. Capt Watson said the collision was "entirely intentional" on the part of the Japanese. "Four Japanese ships circled the Bob Barker like sharks," he said. "Then one of them, the Yushin Maru 3, did a quick turn and rammed a three-foot gash in the hull. "Luckily, the waters are calm at the moment and we have a welding crew working to fix it." The anti-whaling vessel was blocking the slipway of the Nisshin Maru, the Japanese whaling fleet's factory ship, when the collision occurred. Japan's Fisheries Agency said however, the activist boat caused the collision by suddenly approaching the harpoon vessel to throw bottles containing butyric acid in an attempted attack on the Japanese ship. The Japanese agency accused Sea Shepherd of "committing an act of sabotage" on the Japanese expedition, noting that it is allowed under world whaling restrictions as a scientific expedition. "We will not tolerate the dangerous activity that threatens Japanese whaling ships and endangers the lives of their crew members," it said in a statement late yesterday..... www.news.com.au (see PIC) *
this is the video from the Ady Gill just before and as she is hit by the whalers, you can clearly see and hear that her engines are turned off and she is stationary and that the crew can't believe what about to happen. This shows that it was the sick Japanese whalers who caused the crash on intentionally, this shows all the people who did not belive it before that know it was the whalers fault, and that they should all be hit in the head with an explosive harpoon and see how they like it!!!!!!!
Violence begets violence. Its like when you let little dogs go after pitbulls... (Note: The date of the Ady Gil fail should be "January 2010", not "January 2009"... got excited. Enjoy.)
Six anti-whaling protesters who suffered minor injuries when their boat collided with a Japanese whaling ship have been rescued in the Southern Ocean. The conservationists say the whalers rammed their vessel, but the Japanese maintain the collision was an accident. They say the protesters had been throwing stink bombs at its whaling ships and were trying to tangle their propellers with ropes. Al Jazeera's Tarek Bazley reports the incident has raised questions about Japans government-backed whaling programme.

In an unprovoked attack captured on film, the Japanese whaling fleets ship Shonan Maru No. 2 deliberately rammed and caused catastrophic damage to the Sea Shepherd catamaran Ady Gil. six crewmembers Rescued by the Sea Shepherd Ship Bob Barker According to eyewitness Captain Chuck Swift on the Bob Barker, the attack happened while the vessels were dead in the water. The Shonan Maru No. 2 suddenly started up and deliberately rammed the Ady Gil ripping eight feet of the bow of the vessel completely off. According to Captain Swift, the vessel does not look like it will be saved. The incident took place at 64 Degrees and 03 Minutes South and 143 Degrees and 09 Minutes East Until this morning the Japanese were completely unaware of the existence of the Bob Barker. This newest addition to the Sea Shepherd fleet left Mauritius off the coast of Africa on December 18th and was able to advance along the ice edge from the West as the Japanese were busy worrying about the advance of the Steve Irwin from the North.

Sea Shepherd ship Ady Gil Rammed and sunk by Japanese Whaler ship Shonan Maru No. 2 on January 6, 2010. As a result of this hit, the Ady Gil sustained heavy damage. All of the six Ady Gil crew members were rescued by the Sea Shepherd's new vessel, the Bob Barker. One crew member sustained broken ribs in this collision. An attempt was made to tow the Ady Gil to port, but the lines kept snapping as she took on water, and she finally sunk in the Southern Ocean the day after this incident.

It is shot just after this video here on Stuff.co.nz www.stuff.co.nz it is clear the Ady gil passed in front of the whaler and was turning for another sweep when it speed up and rammed the whaling vessel
From www.icrwhale.org The Institute of Cetacean Research says the collision in this video was between the Japanese whaling vessel Shonan Maru 2 and the Sea Shepherd anti-whaling vessel Adi Gil. Sea Shepherd claims this was a deliberate and unprovoked attack. The Institute of Cetacean Research claims the Adi Gil attacked Japanese whaling boats for two hours. Anti-whaling activists accuse Japan fleet of attack Anti-whaling activists have accused a Japanese vessel of ramming their high-tech speed boat during a confrontation in the Southern Ocean. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says its vessel was sliced in half, but all six crew were rescued. Earlier the campaigners - who are trying to stop Japan's whaling fleet - said they threw chemicals onto the whaling boat to prevent it being used. Japan's fisheries agency said the group had obstructed the whalers' operations. The agency said it was the fourth time this season that the anti-whaling activists had interfered with the whaling fleet's operations, Kyodo news agency reported In recent years the two sides have confronted each other regularly in waters around the Antarctic. "This seriously escalates the whole situation," Sea Shepherd spokesman Paul Watson said, according to The Age newspaper in Australia. The activists said their boat, the Ady Gil - a high-tech speed boat that resembles a stealth bomber - had its bow sheared off in the clash near Commonwealth Bay. The Sea Shepherd group sends boats to Antarctic waters each year to try to stop the Japanese whaling fleet hunting whales under the auspices of a scientific research programme. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's fast new trimaran, sitting dead in the water, appears to have been deliberately rammed and critically damaged by the much larger Japanese whaling ship (the Shonan Maru No. 2), despite claims from some that the Ady Gil rammed it. Here is the footage from the Japanese ship: judge for yourself. Did the Ady Gil attempt to start its engines and get away, only to fail? Did it first try to move forward, then backward after the ramming? Hopefully further investigation will clarify the matter, but regardless one has to ask why the Shonan Maru No. 2 was heading directly for the stationary boat in the first place and why did it turn to starboard, t-boning the Ady Gil. From the start of the video, note that the water cannons are firing and an LRAD is blaring (compare with this video: www.youtube.com All of this may have also served to disorient the Ady Gil captain and crew. Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert & Greenpeace Japan anti-whaling campaigner Toru Suzuki outline the issues surrounding Japanese whaling.
Despite repeated assaults by frustrated and increasingly violent Japanese whalers, the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin continues to stand guard behind the Japanese floating abattoir called the Nisshin Maru. The three Japanese harpoon boats are not in the area but the Sea Shepherd crew is prepared to obstruct them should they return. The Japanese have been accusing Sea Shepherd of trying to obstruct their props with ropes yet the whalers have been trying to do the same thing to the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin. They are accusing the Sea Shepherd crew of throwing rotten butter (which the Japanese refer to as "acid") at them yet the whalers are throwing golf balls and chunks of metal at the Steve Irwin crew. In addition, the Japanese are blasting the Sea Shepherd crew with water cannons and Long Range Acoustical weapons - a sonic gun that causes disorientation, nausea and deafness. "I find it interesting that so called experts and politicians are quick to condemn Sea Shepherd's tactics for upholding conservation law yet say not a word about the escalating physical violence directed at us by the whalers who are breaking the law," said Captain Paul Watson. "Their position of siding with the poachers seems to be that if we did not put ourselves in this situation we would not be experiencing such violence. The same could be said for any policeman and Sea Shepherd is not down here to protest whaling, we are down here to obstruct illegal whaling as defined under international ...
From the Irony Desk: Defying an International whaling ban, Japan insists that harmless violence against boats is unforgivable, but whaling should be forgiven. Japanese officials criticized the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for an "unforgivable act of violence" after its anti-whaling vessel bumped a Japanese whaling ship while trying to prevent the whalers from hauling a recently harpooned whale aboard. The Japanese ship suffered a bent railing. No one was injured, except the slain whale. Once again the garbage scow, the Steve Irwin of Sea Shepherd launched an unprovoked childish eco-terrorist attack upon the Japanese whaling fleet. To prevent illegal boarding by the girly men of the Sea Shepherd the Japanese had to protect their ships with netting. In addition they used water cannons to continuously spray water to protect their ships from all sides. While water cannons were discharging huge amounts of water, the Sea Shepherd children in rubber rafts sailed directly under the water cannons. Once soaked and knocked about, they accused the Japanese of attacking them with water cannons. The videos clearly show Sea Shepherds rubber rafts sailing directly into the discharging water cannons looking to accept the consequences of their childish behavior. Since a most of the girly men care children the Japanese employed a device which emits hi-frequency sound waives which can only be heard by those less than 30 years of age, and is extremely irritating to them. This device is used in the front of some shops who do not want teenagers congregating outside their shops. Now these hi-frequency sound waves have a short range. Meaning one would have to be menacingly close to the Japanese ship to be impacted by the sound waves. If Sea Shepherd did not want to get soaked with water, they should not have sailed under the water cannons. If the girly-men did not want to have their childish ears offended by the hi-frequency sound waives, they should not have sailed menacingly ...
A new report has urged the Australian Government to take a whole new approach to stop Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. The expert report argues Australia should open up a new front in its anti-whaling campaign by challenging Japan through the forum of the Antarctic treaty system over the environmental costs of its annual slaughter. The Southern Ocean has long been protected as part of the world's largest unspoiled wilderness Antarctica. But Japan's so-called scientific whaling program has sparked passionate debate about whether the area is truly an international safe haven for marine life. While conservation activists continue to harass whaling ships in the open waters, it is the Australian Government which has led diplomatic efforts to enforce the Antarctic whaling sanctuary. Now the Australian Government is being urged to take a fresh approach to stop Japanese whaling. Darren Kindleysides represents the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which wages a less confrontational campaign to end Japanese whaling carried out under the guise of scientific research. It believes Australia should abandon behind the scenes diplomatic persuasion and change tack by challenging Japan, not on whaling, but environmental grounds. "It's time to rock Japan's boat on the whaling issue and really pull this into the Antarctica treaty forum as a way of challenging Japan and working towards ending their whaling in the Southern Ocean," he told ABC1's The 7.30 Report. "Whaling activities ...

Friday, December 26, 2008 Sea Shepherd Clashes With Whaling Fleet in Australian Waters 0730 GMT December 26th, 2008 Australian Antarctic Territorial Waters The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin closed in on one of the vessels of the Japanese whaling fleet at 0730 Hours GMT (1930 Hours Sydney Time) on December 26th off the coast of the Australian Antarctic Territory north of the Mawson Peninsula. The Kaiko Maru emerged from dense fog in front of the Steve Irwin. The Sea Shepherd crew pursued and delivered 10 bottles of rotten butter and 15 bottles of a methyl cellulose and indelible dye mixture. "That is one stinky slippery ship," said Sea Shepherd 2nd Officer Peter Hammarstedt of Sweden. The Japanese ship was ordered out of the territorial waters of Australia by Australian citizen Jeff Hansen from Perth, Western Australia. The message was delivered in Japanese. As the Steve Irwin came alongside the starboard side of the Kaiko Maru, the whaler steered hard to starboard and struck the Steve Irwin lightly crushing part of the aft port helicopter deck guard rails on the Sea Shepherd ship. There was no serious damage to either ship. The Sea Shepherd crew's objective was to intimidate the Japanese fleet and to keep them moving Eastward out of Australian Territorial waters. The Sea Shepherd crew have been pursuing the fleet eastward for a week. There is only 90 miles left before the fleet enters the New Zealand Zone. "Our objective now is to chase them out of ...
Friday, December 19, 2008 Japanese Whaling Fleet Is On the Run The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin now has the entire Japanese whaling fleet on the run. At 2345 GMT the Steve Irwin intercepted the Japanese harpoon vessel Yushin Maru #2 inside the Australian Antarctic Economic Exclusion Zone at 64°26 South and 132° 40' East. The encounter took place in dense fog and in dangerous ice conditions. The Steve Irwin launched a Delta boat with a crew to attack the Yushin Maru #2 with rotten butter bombs. Unfortunately the wind increased to fifty knots with blizzard conditions. Captain Paul Watson called the small boat crew back for safety reasons when they were halfway to their target some three miles away. The Yushin Maru #2 then headed due North to lead the Steve Irwin away from the whaling fleet. The decoy did not work. The Steve Irwin is now in pursuit of the whaling fleet. They have ceased whaling operations and they are now running from the Sea Shepherd crew. The Yushin Maru #2 was the same vessel that the Steve Irwin crew boarded in January 2007. This year the crew observed that the Yushin Maru #2 has set up large netting to be run along the side of the ship to prevent boarding parties from going over the side. When the whalers realized that the Steve Irwin was onto them, they immediately ran on deck to deploy the netting. "It looks like Whale Wars, season #2 is officially underway," said Captain Paul Watson. "We've got them on the run. They are not in ...
Japan's annual whale hunt sets sail, despite strong calls to end it. CNN's Kyung Lah reports.
Under two months Japan is coming back to the Antarctic Whale sanctuary for another 1000 whales. This includes endangered species and random sampling. Random sampling is when they hunt any whale they see including calves and mothers. A mother once lost its calf and fasted it self for several days while drifting in the water. Not only does the mother get depressed but through their social networking, which is very complex and can't be understood by humans, other whales get depressed. The whales they kill in the Antarctic swim right past australia and give birth in our waters. We protect them, then when they are swming back to antarctica the japanese kill them which can take up to 30 mins. These whales were born in Asutralia! What are you going to do Australia? Are you going to let another 1000 whales die? Are you just gonna sit there? TOGETHER WE CAN STOP WHALING worldagainstwhaling.webs.com
Defending Whales in Antarctica Our 2006-2007 campaign Operation Leviathan was the third and most successful Sea Shepherd expedition to the Southern Oceans to intervene against illegal whaling operations by the Japanese fleet in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary. The ambitious campaign involved the utilization of two ships, (the Farley Mowat and the Robert Hunter), a Hughes 300 helicopter (the Kookabura), and 56 crewmembers from 14 different nations. The Japanese whaling fleet had plans to kill 935 piked (Minke) whales and 50 fin whales. Year after year, the whalers flout international laws, killing thousands of whales. It continues to be our goal to save these gentle giants from the whalers' brutal harpoons. Thankfully, with your help, we were able to do just that. During Operation Leviathan, we were at sea for five weeks and chased the whaling fleet over thousands of square miles constantly interrupting their whaling activities. We intercepted and engaged the fleet on February 9th and 12th, 2007, and their whaling operations were disrupted saving several pods of whales. Operation Leviathan 2006-2007 seashepherd.org

Look at how Japanese kill the whale and how brave people fight against them... let more people see this clip. Thanks guys
Japanese whaling fleets set sail Nov. 18 to begin an international expedition around Antarctica, where they anticipate killing more than 1000 whales over the next four months. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) reports Japan is also expanding its annual whale hunt to include 50 endangered humpback whales. Japan claims its whaling expeditions are for scientific purposes. However, IFAW reports new findings from international legal experts indicate Japan's expanded whaling claim is false under international law. IFAW reports an international panel found Japan's fleets are in violation of the International Whaling Commission's (IWC) regulations and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
