Last week at a Johnson County Community College Board of Trustees meeting former adult student Kathy Brown continued her pursuit of a complaint against JCCC, which she initiated publicly at their April meeting. Brown's complaint alleges suppression of speech and suppression of the right to free assembly through the college's "discomfort doctrine." She has been working through the college's complaint process for 15 months. Brown, an attorney and a nurse, enrolled at JCCC to avail herself of an LPN to RPN bridge program for nurses.
JCCC LUNA students wanting to attend La Raza Conference in San Antonio were blocked from traveling by air because two students did not have documentation. The whole group was blocked from traveling by car because of college policy. Stewart explained the issue about undocumented students is state law and should be addressed by the Kansas legislature. Sharp explained she was in the legislature when the law was passed to allow undocumented students to receive in-state tuition. She said the bill has come up multiple times over the last 4-5 years, and passed every time.

Part 1 of 2. 6:50 in length. Catholic lawyer and nurse, and former part-time JCCC student Kathy Brown speaks during the public comments portions of the monthly Johnson County Community College Board meeting on Thursday, April 29, 2010. Current JCCC Trustees are Jon Stewart, Stephanie Sharp, Lynn Mitchelson, Bob Drummond, Don Weiss, Melody Rayl, and Jerry Cook. Former Kansas Representative, JCCC Trustee Benjamin Hodge has called current President Terry Calaway the most corrupt president in the college's 40-year history. Kathy Brown took one class during the first semester of 2009. Two clear instances of free speech suppression occurred, according to Brown. Over one year later, JCCC still has not produced even a basic response to her problem. JCCC Chair and ex-Metcalf Bank CEO Jon Stewart tells Brown to continue to wait. Current JCCC Board member and Treasurer Lynn Mitchelson remains a key member of Sam Brownback's gubernatorial campaign, even though Mitchelson violated the Kansas Open Meetings Act in 2009, attempted to cover it up, covered up Kathy Brown's allegations from a year ago, and supports the college's no-bid legal contract to Mark Ferguson, a law partner of Kansas Democratic Party Chairman Larry Gates. Under Stewart and Mitchelson, former President Charles Carlsen was accused of sexual harrassment by four female employees. While Mitchelson was vice-chair in 2006, college lawyer Mark Ferguson -- then with Lathrop and Gage -- was directed to engage in what was ...
