A Birmingham man was arrested for child abuse after authorities say he slapped his toddler daughter for eating his Pringles. Justin James Warren Green, 22, was arrested Friday but bonded out of the county jail this morning, said Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian. Investigators said the 2-year-old girl was taken to the emergency room at St. Vincent's East last week with a large hand print and abrasion on the left side of her face. The hospital staff summoned sheriff's deputies and social service workers. Green, Christian said, went to the hospital but was escorted out by hospital staff. The district attorney's office agreed that the case merited child abuse charges, Christian said. Deputies interviewed Green Friday and he confessed to hitting his daughter because she was eating his barbecue Pringles. He was charged with willful abuse of a child and held on $10000 bond until today. "How do you slap a 2-year-old girl over anything?" Christian said, "much less something as silly as she's eating your barbecue Pringles."

A miscarriage of justice -- thats what Judge Frederic Cowan called the imprisonment of an innocent man in the 1993 slaying of a convenience store clerk. Tuesday, Cowan apologized on behalf of the justice system as he exonerated Edwin A. Chandler for the slaying. Chandler served nine years in prison and another five years on parole for the crime. Jefferson County Commonwealths Attorney David Stengel said another man, Percy Phillips, was indicted Tuesday in the slaying. Cowan said he could not overstate the significance of the case and reminded those in the courtroom the seriousness with which they should take their jobs.

The Jefferson County Jail, in Hillsboro, Mo., held a one-time bed and breakfast to raise money for a new wing of the facility. A KRCG reporter spent a night in 'jail' for the story. Unlike real inmates, he got to play trivia.
Most people pay to get out, but on Friday nearly 100 people in Jefferson County paid to get into jail. Trying to figure how to pay for bedding and blankets for the jail's new wing, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department decided to let people experience life as an inmate. Around 100 people paid $50 to get booked and thrown into the clink for a night. The inmates were booked, photographed and then headed to the clink for an overnight stay. The sheriff never expected the dozens of people to come to his bed and breakfast. Here is a short video of my experience on jail.
Thomas Becket McGlawn was sentenced July 27, 2009 to 1 year and 1 day for Probation Violation and Thief of Property 3. Because of the video - he pleaded guilty to all charges. A shelter for adolescents in southern Illinois is suing the local sheriffs office for what it describes as an unprovoked attack by two police officers on four children, three of whom were tasered, and one of whom was threatened with sodomy by a sheriffs deputy. The Southern Thirty Adolescent Center near Mount Vernon, IL, filed the lawsuit on behalf of three children in its custody, who the lawsuit says were tasered by Jefferson County sheriffs deputies who had been called to help subdue two misbehaving children, aged 11 and 12. Neither of those children were among those who were tasered during what one news service described as a police rampage. The incident took place on July 4, 2008. The federal lawsuit was filed in an East St. Louis court on Friday. In the suit the children are named only by their initials: BB, RE, and ZP According to the legal filing, quoted in the Mount Vernon Register, one deputy physically pushed RE towards his bunk and shocked him repeatedly with a taser.
