Corin Redgrave, an actor, activist and member of the Redgrave theatrical dynasty, has died. He was 70. Corin was brother to actresses Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave and son to matinee idol Michael Redgrave and his actress wife Rachel Kempson, as well as uncle to star Natasha Richardson, who died last year. His wife, Kika Markham, said he died in a London hospital Tuesday, after falling ill at home on Sunday. Corin Redgrave was known for his radical political views, including his stance against the Iraq War and his bid to get former prime minister Tony Blair impeached. As an actor, he had a string of roles on stage and screen, including the hapless groom Hamish in the hit movie comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral. Born in London on July 16, 1939, Redgrave entered the family business while studying at Cambridge University. His first stage appearance was at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1961, playing Lysander in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. His first major screen role came in 1966, when he appeared in the Oscar-winning historical drama A Man for All Seasons. Other films credits included The Magus, Oh! What a Lovely War, In the Name of the Father and Enduring Love. Corin Redgrave also appeared on the British TV shows Trial and Retribution, Foyle's War and Kavanagh QC In 1995 he wrote a book, Michael Redgrave: My Father, which discussed his father's bisexuality. It was later made into a BBC documentary. In 1998 Redgrave won a Laurence Olivier award for his role ...
From the PBS Masterpiece Theatre series first aired far too many years ago. From Season 1, Episode 3, Part 2 (Apologies - introductory label on video is NOT correct!). (Subsequent episodes/parts to follow soon...) This remains one of my favourite Masterpiece Theatre offerings ever! Jemma Redgrave's Dr. Eleanor Bramwell displays many admirable qualities as she struggles to become a physician/surgeon in the male-dominated world of Victorian England, yet her Bramwell also shows some very human foibles, tool, giving the audience a more interesting, credible and sympathetic character. The re-creation of clinical scenes is also quite accurate (and occasionally not for the squeamish!). SYNOPSIS : Set in 1895, 'Bramwell' follows the fortunes of feisty, compassionate Dr. Eleanor Bramwell (JEMMA REDGRAVE, daughter of Corin Redgrave, and niece of Vanessa and Lynn) in her pursuit of public health and private amours in Victorian-era London. Eleanor's father Robert (DAVID CALDER) would like his daughter to join him in his respectable private practice, but Eleanor has plans of her own, which take her from the drawing rooms of the elite to the shocking deprivation of the slums of London's East End. During a chance encounter on a train, the elderly Miss Lavinia Pinkerton (Sylvia Syms) confides in Miss Marple that she is going to Scotland Yard to report a murderer who has already struck several times in the peaceful village of Wychwood-under-Ashe. Bumble bee, she warns, is next. When she later reads that Miss Pinkerton died in a tragic accident before making her report, Miss Marple determines that it must fall to her to find out who the killer is... Charming her way into village life, Miss Marple is befriended by Luke Fitzwilliam (Benedict Cumberbatch), a handsome former policeman who is increasingly drawn to the mysterious young American and newcomer to the village Bridget Conway (Margo Stilley). Luke and Bridget are not the only young couple making eyes at each other the dashing young doctor Geoff Thomas (James Lance) also appears taken with his partner, the belligerent Dr Humblebys (Tim Brooke Taylor), beautiful daughter Rose (Camilla Arfwedson), much to Humblebys disapproval. Miss Marple is soon acquainted with church organist Honoria Waynflete (Shirley Henderson), Miss Pinkertons closest friend. Honoria is pitied by the villagers, having given up a chance for happiness with local MP Major Horton (David Haig) many years ago to take care of her disabled brother, who died in a tragic accident. She also learns that the grandmother of Honorias maid Amy (Lyndsey Marshal) was fatally poisoned recently an accident Miss Pinkerton was most suspicious of. The sudden death ...
