This is one of my favorite albums, definitely a "desert island" record -- as long as the island has a phonograph. Best I can tell, it's not available on CD or download. But I have dubbed my LP into iTunes, so what you're hearing came from glorious vinyl. I'll eventually post the entire album on YouTube. THE SONG Recorded 9/1/1967, RCA Victor Studio, Nashville When Jerry Reed wrote this satirical look at the rise of Elvis Presley, the King's crown was a little tarnished. That was in 1967 -- six years since Elvis last took the stage, and several formulaic movies down the pike. Much different than when he burst onto the scene in the mid-1950s. Reed tells that story through the eyes of a talent scout who, unfortunately for his career, failed to see the promise in the rough-around-the edges singer named Beauregard Rippy. Nine days after it was recorded, Reed was back at RCA, playing guitar for Elvis on Reed's "Guitar Man." Outtakes of a session in 1968 on which Reed played guitar indicate that Elvis got a kick out of "Tupelo Mississippi Flash" -- his laughing banter with Reed included several of the lyrics. THE ALBUM RCA Victor LSP-3978 (stereo)/ LPM-3978 (mono) Released March 1968 Produced by Chet Atkins Track details can be found at bit.ly Liner notes by John Hartford: It's three o'clock in the morning and I have just listened to a lacquer of this album... I've been mesmerized through both sides now. I'm meandering down the hall... hunting a cigarette, talking to myself and ...
