Washington, DC...On Sunday, July 4, the National Archives celebrated Independence Day with its annual ceremony, its first ever National Independence Day Parade float, and a brand new logo. The first ever National Archives Independence Day Parade Float featured the Declaration of Independence and other "National Treasures" from the holdings of the National Archives. This float launched the National Independence Day Parade in front of the National Archives Building. The float also featured a brand new National Archives logo. The National Archives Building in Washington, DC, was designed by noted architect John Russell Pope. Inspired by Pope's classical architecture and sculptural detail, the logo features a majestic stone eagle. The eagle symbolizes protection -- underscoring the role of the National Archives as guardian of this nation's records.

Representatives from each of the sponsoring organizations addressed the crowd from the podium at the Lincoln Memorial. Speakers included all six civil-rights leaders of the so called, "Big Six"; Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish religious leaders; and labor leader Walter Reuther. The one female speaker was Josephine Baker. Floyd McKissick read James Farmer's speech because Farmer had been arrested during a protest in Louisiana; Farmer had written that the protests would not stop "until the dogs stop biting us in the South and rats stop biting us in the North." Gospel legend Mahalia Jackson sang "How I Got Over," musician Bob Dylan performed several songs, including "Only a Pawn in Their Game," about the culturally-fed racial hatred amongst Southern whites that led to the assassination of Medgar Evers; and "When the Ship Comes In," during which he was joined by fellow folk singer Joan Baez, who earlier had led the crowds in several verses of "We Shall Overcome" and "Oh Freedom." King gave his famous I Have a Dream speech, which was carried live by TV stations. Although one of the officially stated purposes of the march was to support the civil rights bill introduced by the Kennedy Administration, several of the speakers criticized the proposed law as insufficient. The MITTS Altair company was owned by Ed Roberts. Roberts sold the company and went to medical school and is now a practicing MD. Although the 680 was "pre-announced" on the cover of the November, 1975 issue of Popular Electronics (following the similar introduction of its big brother, the Altair 8800), the headline trumpeting "THE FIRST MOTOROLA 6800 COMPUTER PROJECT" was not the whole truth. Ironically, page 5 of the same magazine carried an ad for the Sphere, a 6800 based computer available in kit form for $860, and page 89 advertised the SWTPC 6800 kit at $450. It's hard to say which computer actually shipped first in quantity. MITS offered a discount for orders placed before December 31, 1975, but the ads offering the discount featured a picture of the mock up 680 that appeared on the Popular Electronics cover (yes, the 680 was a mock up, just like the 8800 photo on the magazine cover the previous January). Also, the "December 31, 1975" discount ads appeared in Byte magazine as late as February 1976. Kennedy assassination and the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination. The Committee investigated until 1978, and in 1979 issued its final report, concluding that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, probably as a result of a conspiracy. The members of this probable conspiracy were not identified. However, the committee noted that it believed that the conspiracy did not include the governments of the Soviet Union or Cuba, nor the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), or the Secret Service. It also stated it did not believe the conspiracy was organized by any organized crime group, nor any anti-Castro group, but that it could not rule out individual members of either of those groups acting together. The House Select Committee on Assassinations suffered from being conducted mostly in secret, and then issuing a public report with much of its evidence kept secret. In 1992, Congress passed legislation to collect and open up all the evidence relating to Kennedy's death, and created the Assassination Records Review Board to further that goal. The year was 1978 and it was an enjoyable class. We worked at our own pace and graded on our mastery of the subject as measured by how many programs we completed and how well we solved the problem in logic given. Then came video terminals in place of the punch cards for a chemistry class. Very cool stuff. I spent many late hours at those old HP terminals running simulations of NMR spectra and chemical composition problems. I left Tech in 1980 and took a job as a lab technician and operator at a local waste water treatment plant. I wasn't seriously going to take the job at first but I went to check it out anyway. When I got there I talked to the superintendent and looked around. I walked into a room filled with analog controllers, strip chart recorders and alarm systems and I changed my mind about taking the job. It was a fine opportunity to learn more about process control and analog electronics. I went back to tech in 1984 and took some digital electronics classes taught under Mr David Larsen and Dr. Paul Field. LCF School LCFschoolThis program would always be ready to run at start up and not need to be loaded each time the computer was turned on. An EPROM, or Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory, is a type of memory chip that retains its data when its power supply is switched off. In other words, it is non-volatile. It is an array of floating-gate transistors individually programmed by an electronic device that supplies higher voltages than those normally used in digital circuits. Once programmed, an EPROM can be erased only by exposing it to strong ultraviolet light. That UV light usually has a wavelength of 253.7nm (for optimum erasure time) and belongs to the UVC range of UV light.
